Harvey Elliott immediately told to quit Liverpool after England U21s heroics
Harvey Elliott was urged to 'get out and play' by Jermain Defoe after firing England into the U21 European Championship final with a brilliant brace against the Netherlands.
Lee Carsley's men will get the chance to defend their European crown this weekend after beating the Dutch 2-1 courtesy of Elliott's double, the second of which was plundered five minutes from time to spark jubilant scenes in Bratislava.
While Elliott has been the standout player for England at this summer's tournament, he had to settle for a bit-part role in Liverpool's title-winning campaign under Arne Slot.
That has seen the 22-year-old linked with a blockbuster summer move - and Defoe feels it's a no-brainer for the midfield maestro to seek out a club where he will be the main man after a season of sitting on the bench.
Speaking on Channel 4 after Elliott's matchwinning double, Defoe said: 'There'll be a lot of clubs watching this tournament.
'We said it before, he's too good to not be playing. When you're producing in big tournaments like this against the best players, the two goals that we saw this evening, he's a top, top player.
'For him, he just needs to go out and play, get himself in a team where he's one of the main players, and just go out and express yourself and show how good you are because this performance tonight, it's amazing.'
Joe Cole, also analysing the game for Channel 4, was in full agreement with his former England colleague. He said: 'I love the lad.
'I think he plays football the right way and I'm really excited for him. Not just for this final, but I'm excited for his future as well, for next year.
'He's done a great job for Liverpool, and if he decides to move on, I still feel there's levels. For a player to come to a tournament and do what he's done, there's levels for him to go up again, and I'd love to see him playing with that kind of passion and happiness on his face every week.'
Brighton are the latest club to be credited with an interest in the former Fulham youngster, who has already hinted he could leave Anfield this summer.
But Elliott only has eyes for Saturday's Euros final after downing the Netherlands, saying post-match: 'I can't put it into words - another final.
'I know I keep saying it, but now we need to rest, recover and go again. It's not over yet. Tonight was another amazing experience in tough conditions. The way the lads dug deep, I think we deserved to reach the final.'

The La Liga giants have enjoyed a steady start in the United States with a draw against Al-Hilal and victory over Pachuca. And Speaking ahead of facing RB Salzburg, Alonso made his stance clear of what he wants to see from his team in the future. "We all have to defend, the 11 players on the field have to be involved," Alonso said in a press conference. "They have to see how we want to press, we're all involved -- Vini, Jude [Bellingham], Fede [Valverde], Kylian. "The defence has to push up, the tighter we are with the spaces [between us] the better. We have to improve that. We're working on it, and Vini too." It is perhaps not an unforeseen development after Mbappe's arrival brought criticism from some quarters. Dietmar Hamann believed the side lacked enough players willing to put in a defensive effort and correctly predicted they would not retain their La Liga title. "I don't think Mbappe has improved them," said Hamann in November. "I think they've got too many stars, or too many players who want to shine, and not enough players who make others better. Somebody's got to do the work. "The player who's probably suffered the most after the arrival of Mbappe is [Jude] Bellingham. He scored a hatful of goals before Christmas last season. He played pretty much as a centre forward because they didn't have one, and now he's got to do some dirty work, because you can't have four players not defending - three is probably too much. "Mbappe and Vini don't do it, Rodrygo sometimes does. It can't function. You can't defend with six or seven players. It's impossible. You might beat teams in La Liga, but you won't beat the best teams in Europe. "Obviously, they've got great individual quality, but I think there's a lot of question marks about the team. I don't see them defending the title." For the moment, Alonso is happy to come up against some stiff competition in the US. "It's good for European football to see the level of competition outside," Alonso said. "You see teams that you don't see as often, who are very good, at a good level. River [Plate], we'll see them against Inter [on Wednesday], the Brazilians too. At the start [of the tournament] we all looked at the European teams, but I think this is good for football in general."

It's going to be a busy window at Ibrox and we have the latest on three key men from last season Vaclav Cerny has been told he is up for sale by Wolfsburg after showdown talks with their new manager Paul Simonis - as AEK Athens need to stump up around £1million if they want to get Cyriel Dessers. Former Rangers winger Cerny enjoyed an excellent loan spell in Govan, but the Ibrox club didn't have an agreement in place for a purchase option with the Bundesliga club. He was set to return to pre-season training in Germany and his future hinged on whether the club's new manager, Dutch boss Simonis, would see him as part of his plans. But reports in Germany have confirmed Cerny is now officially on the transfer list with Wolfsburg having to seriously cut their bloated squad for the new season because of ongoing financial problems with owners, German car giants Volkswagen, who have their headquarters in the Lower Saxony city. They are planning to lay off around 35,000 of their workforce - a quarter of their entire total - to save an estimated £3.5billion over the next five years. Those measures have filtered their way back to the football club, who will make severe cuts and trim their playing staff too. And Cerny has been told he will be allowed to leave, along with Tiago Tomas, who has been linked with a move to Bayer Leverkusen, with the sale of both of them expected to bring in a sizeable bonanza for Wolfsburg. Former Celtic defender Moritz Jenz has also been told he is surplus to requirements, along with Bartol Franjic, Nicolas Cozza and Kofi Amoako. Meanwhile, Dessers remains a target for Greek giants AEK Athens and Record Sport revealed personal terms have been agreed with the player. But reports in Greece say that there is 'about €1m distance' between the two clubs with talks ongoing for the Nigeria international who is their top target. Dessers' fellow Ibrox striker Hamza Igamane has also reportedly agreed personal terms with Lille but the Rangers Review say that while the French club have spoken to the player's camp, they have yet to make an official approach over the Moroccan, but say he "is likely to leave" this summer.
