
City research institute develops a new programme redefining maths education
Bengaluru: In a move to make mathematics learning more engaging and accessible, Prayoga Institute of Education Research, a DSIR-recognised institution in Bengaluru, has launched Dhatu, a new initiative to transform mathematics learning. Using a technology-enabled platform, Dhatu aims to make math less intimidating and more accessible for students. Offered free of cost, the program will pilot in 2025–26 and fully roll out by 2027, with a focus on reaching socially and economically disadvantaged schools and supporting quality math education across diverse communities.
Prayoga has collaborated with Prof. Jeffrey Ullman, Professor of Computer Science (Emeritus), Stanford University, Turing Awardee 2021, to develop comprehensive mathematics learning modules for students in grades 9–12, based on the NCERT curriculum. This one-of-a-kind platform allows a substantial amount of flexibility for students and teachers to customize their assessments from the three difficulty levels and select from an expansive question bank developed by the maths team at Prayoga.
Designed to support formative assessments and competitive exams like the JEE, Dhatu uses a multiple-choice format with contextual hints to guide students toward the correct answer. The Prayoga team has mapped both correct and common incorrect responses, identifying key points where students are likely to make mistakes.
'It's heartening to see Prayoga driving innovation in education research and creating a model for STEM learning nationwide. In a country where math was once our strength, over 80% of high school students now experience anxiety around it. With technology shaping our future, math is more critical than ever.' said Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Science and Technology, applauding the initiative.
'By next month, we will have the privilege of reaching over 11,000 students, a meaningful step that reflects how research, when applied with intent, can bring about real change.' said Vallish Herur, Managing Trustee, Prayoga, describing the intent behind the initiative.
This notable initiative was launched through an event at the Prayoga campus in the presence of leading figures from the academic world, such as Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Government of India, Department of Science and Technology, who graced the occasion as the chief guest.
Prof. Jeffrey D. Ullman, Emeritus from Stanford University and Turing Awardee 2021, and Dr. Ramana Yerrineni, Co-founder of Gradiance Corporation, also joined online to share their insights. Prominent figures such as D N Prahlad, Founder of Surya Software Systems Private Limited, Prof. Y Narahari, Professor at Indian Institute of Science and Dr. Tejaswini Ananth Kumar, Chairperson of IIEST, shared their vision for revolutionising educational concepts.
'The beauty of mathematics as a language is rarely taught, leading to fear and disengagement among students. This is largely a result of outdated teaching methods. Technology offers a powerful solution to reach every child and provide the support they need to truly understand and enjoy learning math.' said D N Prahlad, Founder of Surya Software Systems Private Limited, sharing the idea behind the genesis of Dhatu.
Unlike traditional assessment models that often focus on right or wrong answers without explanations and hints, Dhatu uses the Root Question Method to guide students through a logical progression of thought. Originally developed to assist university-level learners in computer science to understand algorithms, the Root Question Method has proven effective in breaking down complex subjects into digestible parts. Each question builds on a central 'root' idea, providing choice explanation and feedback, helping learners connect the dots and understand the why behind the concepts.
This initiative shows Prayoga's commitment to inclusive and empowering education, encouraging students nationwide to learn confidently and clearly. Prayoga is now welcoming schools to join the Dhatu program and be part of this transformative learning initiative.

With former US President Donald Trump back in power, the American research community is facing renewed uncertainty. Visa cancellations, abrupt funding cuts, and restrictive policies are pushing scientists and researchers to seek opportunities elsewhere. Amid this exodus, Germany has stepped in as a welcoming alternative-especially through its Max Planck Society. The Max Planck Society, one of the world's leading research networks, has seen a huge surge in applications from US-based researchers for its Spring 2025 intake. Notably, 81 women scientists from the US have applied this year, up from just 25 last year. The rise in applications from the US contrasts with stable numbers from other parts of the world, signalling a significant shift in researcher sentiment. Max Planck Society President Patrick Cramer revealed that nearly half of these new applicants are affiliated with leading US institutions such as Harvard University, Stanford University, MIT, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the University of California system. Funded by the German government, the society comprises 84 research institutes and operates on an annual budget of 2 billion euros. It currently hosts 39 Nobel laureates, and 20 new researcher positions are now open. The exodus of researchers is largely linked to the Trump administration's crackdown on international scholars. A controversial directive sought to ban institutions like Harvard from admitting foreign students. Although a federal court has temporarily blocked this move, the uncertainty has already triggered panic in academic circles. The broader global education and research community has taken notice. High-profile scholars such as Yale historian Timothy Snyder have resigned in protest and relocated to institutions abroad. Anticipating this wave of displaced researchers, Germany has launched a national initiative called "1000 Brains" to expand its research infrastructure and absorb global talent.

‘A lot of hard work, dedication and discipline go into success'
For 18-year-old Rajit Gupta, large banners and hoardings displaying photos and names of previous year's toppers of competitive exams acted as an inspiration, reminding constantly of his aim to find his own photo and name on one of those advertising spots. A resident of Kota, considered India's coaching capital, Gupta bagged the top rank in JEE advanced, the qualifying paper for admission to premier IITs, results of which were announced on Monday. Gupta, an IIT Delhi zone candidate, scored 332 out of 360 marks in the entrance exam. 'My seniors and teachers played a huge role in inspiring me to do well in the exam,' Gupta told HT, adding that watching the faces and names of previous years' toppers also 'truly inspired' him. Having scored a perfect 100 percentile (AIR16) in JEE mains, he was confident about JEE advanced. 'I'm very happy with my result,' said the 18-year-old, whose father Deepak Gupta is a sub-divisional engineer with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and mother Shruti Agrawal teaches home science at a Kota college. 'I have been preparing for this exam for the last three years,' Gupta said, adding he plans to pursue BTech in Computer Science from IIT-Bombay. 'My parents have really helped me throughout the process.' Apart from school hours, he studied 5-6 hours every day, without stressing about the results. 'I play cricket and badminton whenever I get time from my studies,' he added. On his immediate plans, Gupta said he is concentrating on the upcoming international Physics Olympiad. 'I'm going to France and will be representing India on July 18 in the Olympiad,' the JEE topper from Rajasthan said. On the opposite spectrum geographically, Devdutta Majhi of Katwa in West Bengal's East Burdwan district focused solely on the tested combination of 'hard work, dedication, and discipline' to achieve success. A candidate from IIT Kharagpur zone, Majhi topped among female candidates in JEE Advanced, scoring 312 (she was 16th on the common rank list or CRL). 'I studied for 10-12 hours every day and followed a daily routine. Sometimes my mother scolded me when I used to study too much. She cares for my health. Excellence doesn't come overnight. A lot of hard work, dedication and discipline go behind it,' Majhi said. She had topped the Madhyamik examination (Class X board) in West Bengal in 2023 and earlier this year, Majhi hit the headlines along with Archisman Nandy, another student from the eastern state, for scoring perfect 100 in the JEE Mains. 'The only challenge I faced was the dearth of good teachers in the district. For that I had to depend on online classes with teachers from both Kolkata and Delhi,' she said, adding that she wants to pursue research after securing a seat at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. An animal lover, Majhi is also known in her locality as the one who cares for the strays. 'I love to read story books, particularly detective stories. I also play violin,' she added. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee congratulated Majhi for making the state proud. '…Today's JEE Advanced 2025 examination results show that you have been topper among all girls in the entire country, and the highest rank holder in the IIT Kharagpur zone. You achieved top ranks in our Secondary and Higher Secondary examinations earlier, and now you are the topper girl of India! Wish you the very best, and congratulations to your parents and teachers too!' Banerjee said in a post on X.

New Delhi, Delhi zone's Rajit Gupta bagged the top rank in IIT entrance JEE advanced, results of which were announced on to officials at IIT Kanpur , which was the conducting institute this time for Joint Entrance Exam (JEE)-Advanced, a total of 1,80,422 candidates appeared in both papers 1 and 2 of the exam held on May 18."In the exam, 54,378 candidates have qualified, out of which 9,404 are female candidates," an official resident Rajit Gupta, who scored 332 out of 360 marks, is the top ranker in the Common Rank List (CRL). Devdutta Majhi of IIT Kharagpur zone is the top-ranked female candidate with CRL 16. She obtained 312 which is the admission test for engineering colleges across the country, is the qualifying exam for JEE-Advanced.A total of 116 foreign candidates also appeared for the exam, 13 of whom have of the top 100 candidates, 31 each are from Bombay and Delhi zone while 23 are from the IIT Hyderabad zone. Kanpur zone has are four candidates in the top 100, Kharagpur five and Roorkee the criteria for inclusion in the rank list, the official said, aggregate mark is the sum of the marks scored in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry."Candidates have to satisfy the subject-wise as well as the aggregate qualifying marks to be included in a rank list," the official added.
