DIBRUGARH, AUG 8: Hundreds of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) members took to the streets of Dibrugarh on Friday in protest against the Assam government's directive to withdraw cases from Foreigners Tribunals
against illegal Hindu Bangladeshi immigrants.
The demonstration was spearheaded by AASU Dibrugarh District president Rupjyoti Borthakur and town unit president Tanuj Haloi, who led protesters through the city's main thoroughfares before converging at Chowkidingee. Participants wielded banners and raised voices against what they termed a betrayal of indigenous Assamese rights. The protesters also resorted to burning copies of the contentious directive.
"We categorically reject this directive which is nothing less than a covert strategy to impose the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) upon Assam. This is an inexcusable act against the people of Assam. If the CAA is deemed harmful for states operating under Inner Line Permit systems or Sixth Schedule provisions, what justification exists for imposing it upon Assam," AASU Dibrugarh District president Rupjyoti Borthakur said.
The AASU emphasised the importance of adhering to the Assam Accord, which establishes March 24, 1971, as the cut-off date for identifying and deporting illegal immigrants.
"The government cannot pick and choose which illegal immigrants to shield based on their religion. There should be no religious criteria influencing decisions on illegality. Any individuals from Bangladesh, regardless of being Hindu or Muslim, who entered Assam after that date should be sent back. Assam is not a refuge for illegal immigrants from Bangladesh," AASU town unit president Tanuj Haloi said.

In anticipation of roll revision, Congress begins training of booth-level agents in Assam
With Assam administration indicating that the State will soon be holding Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, State Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi said that the party has begun the process of recruiting and training its Booth Level Agents (BLAs). The SIR is currently underway in Bihar and the Election Commission (EC) has indicated that it will be held across the country. 'So far we have registered close to 28,880 BLAs. We have also started a training programme for these agents. On Sunday, we concluded one round of training. At the end of the month, we will hold a week-long training programme. In the first module, we are briefing them on how voter list manipulation has been undertaken in Maharashtra and in Karnataka. We will show them the evidence that Rahul Gandhi's team had provided,' Mr. Gogoi told The Hindu. The party is also prepping up its legal team to support the BLAs to file objections and claims. The SIR exercise in Assam, Mr. Gogoi said, will be particularly difficult because of the demographic complexities, which he accused the BJP government of further complicating. 'NRC in limbo' 'The NRC (National Register of Citizens) remains in a limbo in Assam. The BJP government is not willing to address the issue of foreigners since they have no solutions to offer. Instead with the Citizenship Amendment Act, they have issued guidelines by which several Bengali speaking people have to give a written affidavit that they are from Bangladesh to apply under the Act,' he said. Instead of identifying illegal Bangladeshis as Prime Minister Narendra Modi had claimed, Mr. Gogoi pointed out that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, today says that he is unable to address the issue. 'Instead of making Assam safe and secure, he is absolving himself of responsibility and wants to distribute guns to the people,' he said.

SP expels partyman involved in Fatehpur incident?
Lucknow: Fatehpur district president of Samajwadi Party , Surendra Prarap Singh, on Tuesday expelled party functionary Pappu Singh Chauhan of Hussainganj. As per the official memo issued by Surendra Singh, Pappu was expelled for anti- party activity. However reports said Chauhan's name has figured as an accused in the Fatehpur incident. Unconfirmed reports said he was part of the mob that hoisted saffron flags atop the mausoleum. On Tuesday, a video surfaced on social media where a man identifying himself as Pappu Singh Chauhan announced that he has resigned from SP because the party had betrayed his trust. He said in Fatehpur district the party was being run by Muslims. Claiming to be a Hindu and a Sanatani, Chauhan in the video said he will always raise issues concerning the Hindus irrespective of the objections raised by "them" - in an apparent reference to SP's Fatehpur district unit. It could not be verified if the man in the video was the same Pappu Singh Chauhan who was expelled from SP. Or, the same person named in the FIR in connection with Fatehpur incident.
