Petroleum Development Act safeguards Petronas's role in Sarawak, says Azalina
Federal minister Azalina Othman Said said Petronas is vested with the ownership of petroleum, and the rights, powers, freedoms, and exclusive privileges to explore, exploit, obtain, and acquire petroleum, whether onshore or offshore. PETALING JAYA : Petronas's rights on oil and gas resources in Sarawak remain protected under the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA), says law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said. In a written parliamentary reply, Azalina said the PDA would remain in force, in accordance with existing legal provisions. 'Petronas is vested with the ownership of petroleum, and the rights, powers, freedoms, and exclusive privileges to explore, exploit, obtain, and acquire petroleum, whether onshore or offshore Malaysia, as provided for under the Act,' she said yesterday. She was responding to Hassan Abdul Karim (PH-Pasir Gudang), who had asked about the extent to which the federal government would defend the PDA as a foundation of the country's economic sovereignty in the oil and gas industry. This is in light of claims by the Sarawak government and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros), which he said challenged the position of Petronas under the Act, Bernama reported. To strengthen cooperation with the Bornean states, Azalina said Petronas had signed two key documents: a commercial collaboration agreement with the Sabah government and a commercial settlement agreement with the Sarawak government. The agreements outline the framework of commercial cooperation between Petronas and state-owned companies such as SMJ Energy and Sabah Energy Corporation in Sabah, and Petros in Sarawak, she said. 'The landscape of the oil and gas industry, as well as the policies of each state government, have resulted in different cooperation structures in terms of ownership, revenue, and profit distribution,' she said. She was answering a question from Isnaraissah Munirah Majlis (Warisan-Kota Belud), who had asked about the differences in terms of ownership, revenue, and profit distribution between Petronas, SMJ Energy and Petros respectively, and the agreements between the parties. She said key factors influencing the differences in cooperation structure included the level of equity participation by SMJ Energy and Petros in upstream and downstream sector projects, as well as the strategic cooperation structures formed with the respective entities. She said although Petronas's cooperation with Sabah and Sarawak was based on the principles of inclusiveness and shared values, the implementation and outcomes might vary depending on the oil and gas industry landscape.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 6 — Investment in urban biodiversity can yield not only economic returns but also contribute to environmental sustainability and the social well-being of communities, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. He said that adopting a sustainable approach to urban development can help create a greener, cleaner environment, thereby enhancing residents' quality of life while also attracting investors and tourists. 'When we move towards urban biodiversity, we consider various aspects, including the economic perspective. Our investment isn't solely for financial returns, but also for the benefits it brings to the environment. 'Ultimately, the benefits are returned to the people living there, as it will result in cleaner air,' he told reporters after officiating the closing ceremony of the Urban Biodiversity Conference (UBC) 2025 at the Sime Darby Convention Centre here yesterday. Fadillah said that the development of more green spaces and recreational parks in urban areas has the potential to enhance the social well-being of residents, in line with the goals of sustainable development. The Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, graced the conference, which began at 10am. Meanwhile, Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, noted that property values could also rise when developments are environmentally friendly and incorporate biodiversity considerations in urban planning. 'Return on investment will improve, as people are more likely to buy. Not just houses, but homes — real places to live, where the environment is cleaner and greener. 'A better environment will undoubtedly yield higher returns, as people are willing to pay a premium for spaces that are more environmentally friendly, user-friendly, and occupant-friendly,' he added. The Urban Biodiversity Conference (UBC) 2025, themed 'Coexistence: Shared Environments for Balance and Resilience', is organised by Sime Darby Property. The conference aims to promote the integration of biodiversity into urban planning through cross-sector collaboration, while reinforcing the commitment to sustainable development and enhancing community well-being. Earlier, Fadillah witnessed the signing ceremony of the five-year partnership on Urban Biodiversity Agreement between Sime Darby Property Berhad and the Tropical Rainforest Conservation and Research Centre (TRCRC), aimed at strengthening efforts to conserve urban biodiversity in Bandar Elmina. Sime Darby Property was represented by its chief operating officer — Township Development Appollo Leong, while TRCRC was represented by its executive director Dr Dzaeman Dzulkifli. Close to RM5bil in ‘wang ehsan' given to Terengganu and Kelantan, says PM
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the 'wang ehsan' was distributed to Terengganu and Kelantan despite no petroleum being 'won and saved' from the two states. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A total of RM4 billion in 'wang ehsan', or goodwill payment, has been distributed to Terengganu between 2023 and 2025, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said. Kelantan has received RM967 million, Anwar, who is also the finance minister said. These funds were meant to implement projects and programmes that benefit the people of the two states, he said, adding that the allocation was not distributed to other states. Anwar said this in a parliamentary reply to Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (PN-Pengkalan Chepa), who wanted to know the status of the payment of petroleum royalties to the east coast states. He said the wang ehsan was distributed to Terengganu and Kelantan despite no petroleum being 'won and saved' from the two states. In March last year, Anwar said his administration allocated a total of RM1.55 billion for Terengganu's development last year, despite petroleum royalties amounting to only RM786 million. He said the development expenditure of the PAS-led state increased to RM1.59 billion this year. Anwar also said total petroleum royalties for Terengganu increased during his administration compared to when PAS and Bersatu were in the federal government, with only RM399 million recorded in 2022.
