Netanyahu Now Plans To Annex Gaza
Under the scheme, Israel will give Gaza political and militant group Hamas a short deadline for accepting a ceasefire. After Hamas refuses to accept Netanyahu's terms (which will likely be written to guarantee refusal) Israel will start annexing portions of Gaza, starting with the buffer zone it has created along the perimeter of the territory, before proceeding to claim more land in the north. Eventually, all of Gaza will be claimed as Israeli land, fulfilling the wishes of extremist ministers who are vital to Netanyahu's ruling coalition.
One of those powerful coalition members is Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, leader of the Religious Zionism party, which seeks to move the Israeli state closer to a theocracy. Smotrich is himself a West Bank settler who has long agitated for the annexing of that territory. In May, Smotrich told a settler conference that 'Gaza will be totally destroyed,' with all 2.3 million residents 'concentrated' in the extreme south, where they will be 'totally despairing' with 'no hope' and 'looking for relocation to begin a new life in other places.'
Smotrich opposed Netanyahu's decision — in the face of rising malnutrition and starvation in Gaza accompanied by growing global condemnation — to even slightly increase the flow of food and medicine into the besieged strip. So did another minister of note: Itamar Ben Gvir, who leads the National Security Ministry, called Netanyahu's move 'a capitulation to Hamas's deceitful campaign,' and reiterated his demand that nothing at all be allowed to flow into Gaza, and for the IDF to conquer the territory and encourage the Palestinians to move to other countries. To get a sense of his extremism, consider that Ben Gvir infamously adorned his home with a photo of Baruch Goldstein, who mass-murdered 28 Muslims in the 1994 Cave of the Patriarchs massacre. Compounding the anger of Ben Gvir and Smotrich, Netanyahu made the decision to facilitate a small increase in aid flow (largely cosmetic) on Saturday — at a time when the two were supposedly unavailable for consultation because they both observe Shabbat. Ben Gvir called that an excuse for acting without him, saying, 'I am available all Shabbat, 24/7, because I am the national security minister and receive updates all the time.'
Netanyahu's annexation scheme is designed to ease that latest political firestorm on his right, with particular focus on Smotrich, who reportedly told Netanyahu he will 'remain in the government for the time being,' and will 'judge by actions' as to whether the promised annexation of Gaza proceeds.

According to Haaretz , Netanyahu assured his ministers that the annexation plan has been presented to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and that the Trump administration supports it. Annexation could encourage more Western governments to recognize Palestine as a state. On Thursday, French President Macron announced that he intends to recognize Palestine at the September United Nations General Assembly, and Monday brought reports that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has swiftly moved closer to making the same move, under pressure from his Labour Party and growing global consensus that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

The German arms industry has historically been among the globe's largest arms suppliers to Israel. Of course, the US has long been far and away the biggist supplier of arms, and under Trump this doesn't look to cease – with Germany coming in second, according to global monitors, over the last half-decade. 'Israel has the right to defend itself against the terror of Hamas,' Merz continued in his statement. 'The release of the hostages and determined negotiations on a ceasefire are our top priority. The disarmament of Hamas is essential. Hamas must not play a role in the future of Gaza.' But apparently Merz vehemently disagress with the practical how in terms of the methods whereby this is accomplished. Global critics have said Israel is conducting ethnic cleansing and ultimately plans to annex the strip. PM Netanyahu has sought to deflect this criticism by saying Israel will conquer the whole enclave, but that it doesn't ultimatley want to govern it. This vaguely suggests it could be handed over to an entity like the Palestinian Authority (PA) one day, but likely this would be done (or not done at all) by a future Israeli government. 'Gaza belongs to the Palestinian people and is an inseparable part of Palestinian territory,' a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson told the AFP. 'The correct way to ease the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and to secure the release of hostages is an immediate ceasefire.' 'A complete resolution to the Gaza conflict hinges on a ceasefire; only then can a path to de-escalation be paved and regional security ensured,' the Chinese government statement said. Beijing is 'willing to work together with the international community to help end the fighting in Gaza as soon as possible,' it added.

Hamas Warns Israel It Is 'Sacrificing' Captives With Plans To Occupy Gaza City
Hamas has warned Israel that it is 'sacrificing' hostages with its newly approved plans to takeover and occupy Gaza City, and the whole of the strip. The militant jihadist group called Netanyahu's plans a 'war crime' and highlighted that Israel's careful use of the term 'control' instead of 'occupation' an attempt to whitewash the truth, and 'to evade its legal responsibility for the consequences of its brutal crime against civilians.' Hamas itself has killed thousands of Israelis – with most killed during its Oct.7 2023 terror attack on southern Israel – when it took hundreds captive. But it's believed maybe just a dozen or more hostages are still alive – according to recent statements of Israeli officials. Hamas recently featured a propaganda video of a still living hostage 'digging his own grave' in the tunnels under the Gaza Strip. 'They realize that expanding the aggression means sacrificing them,' the new Hamas statement said. This isn't the first time that Hamas has warned more hostages could die as a result of Israeli actions. Amid conflicting reports, the militant group has in the past claimed that Israel's own air and artillery strikes have killed and wounded some of the hostages. Local as well as international reports say the scale of the new military offensive will require many thousands more reservists: In a meeting of the security cabinet that lasted 10 hours, ministers approved proposals for the 'takeover of Gaza City', which is likely to be the first phase for the Israeli military to assume full control of Gaza, as Netanyahu says it is his intention. A statement released by his office did not use the word 'occupation' but, effectively, that is what the plans mean. It is not clear when the operations, which could take months, will start, as the military will have to call up thousands of reservists, exhausted after serving multiple times, and allow for the forced evacuation of residents from an area where around 800,000 Palestinians live. Israel in its conquest and 'control' efforts will be overseeing a largely starving Palestinian population, with most of them having long been internally displaced. China too is airing its extreme concern, but all of this global pressure is unlikely to deter Netanyahu after well over 600 days at war.

UN Chief Deeply Alarmed by Israeli Move to Take Control of Gaza City
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced deep concern over Israel's decision to 'take control of Gaza City,' warning it could lead to an even greater humanitarian disaster for Palestinians. In a statement, Guterres said the move represents a dangerous escalation that risks worsening the suffering of millions in Gaza and could further endanger lives — including those of the remaining hostages.
