Taylor County Expo Center expands parking lot repaving project
ABILENE, Texas () – The Taylor County Expo Center is adding to its large-scale paving project to prolong the life of the new parking lots.
More work and improvements are underway at the Taylor County Expo Center. Right now, the parking lots are seeing some much-needed attention with a massive repaving project, but officials from the expo center have noticed a few other areas of improvement they would like to add to the project.
The funding for this project comes from a government relief program designed to help cities with economic stimulation since the COVID-19 pandemic. The expo center's funding showed some excess financing, known as contingency funding, and the expo center's General Manager, Rochelle Johnson, explains the concept for its use.
'Any time you do a construction project, there's always a contingency that set aside because you never know, especially with an existing facility, you never know what you're going to run into,' Rochelle Johnson said.
These funds are usually used when a mistake is made on a construction site or when additional infrastructure relevant to the original project needs to be added. In this case, the expo center is concentrating on improvements to help prolong the lifespan of the new pavement in the parking lots.
These changes include updated drainage, allowing safer and more comfortable conditions for anyone visiting the expo center. As Johnson explains, this has been an issue in past events.
'When it rains, I've got people stepping out of their RV in two or three inches of water. And so that's going to help both the spectators as well as the exhibitors,' Johnson said.
A proposal for the added improvements for the project went before the Taylor County Commissioners at the most recent Commissioners meeting, and Precinct 2 Commissioner Kyle Kendrick proposed outside bidding for one of the projects that would see a reinforced concrete slab for large dumpsters that are in heavy use for the Expo Center.
Kendrick outlined how this portion of the new projects would be the most costly and was keen on trying to reduce that cost.
'I'd like to save money everywhere we can because we know that we're going to run into more issues along the way. So, I mean, just like the other day, we had the little incident where we had to raise those electrical boxes up, and that was about a $1,900 bill right there. So, I mean, every dollar that we can save is that much better,' said Kendrick
As the additional improvements would be free of cost to the overall project, the Taylor County Commissioners Court ultimately voted to proceed with the additions to the expo center.

Signs removed at family business pizza takeaway as building listed for sale
SIGNS have been removed from a family business pizza takeaway in Warrington, as the building is listed for sale. Signage has been removed in recent weeks on the Don Quattro building, located at Fearnhead Cross on Insall Road. The business is a sister venue for the ever-popular Donatello Italian restaurant, which opened on Orford Lane in 1996. Don Quattro opened in spring 2022, due to the success of Donatello takeaways during the Covid pandemic, and it was hoped that this would be the first of a few takeaway venues in the town. However, the 982 square-foot building has been listed for sale with estate agents Morgan Williams Commercial, with offers in the region of £120,000 considered. The listing states: 'We are delighted to bring to market this wonderful leasehold business for sale. 'The property is a prominent detached former pizza takeaway, suitable for similar retail trades. 'Inside, the unit is fully refurbished and contains high-quality equipment, which is available for purchase. Signs have been removed from the Don Quattro pizza takeaway building in Fearnhead 'The fixtures and fittings list is extensive, and it includes items such as an artisan rotating base pizza oven, full extraction system, and CCTC. 'The property benefits from its own private car park, which can hold approximately seven cars at one time. 'Kitchen and prep areas are well stocked with equipment that forms part of the sale. 'The property is currently trading by our clients as an established pizzeria business, and it will be ideal for a similar use or other takeaway food businesses. 'Our client is the current owner of the business, and they are looking for offers in the region of £120,000 to take full ownership of the lease and fixtures and fittings. 'The purchaser will be assigned the existing, long-term FRI lease direct from the landlord, whereby the current rent passing is £30,000 per annum. 'The property benefits from planning consent under application number 2021/39225, which permits takeaway trade between the hours of 5pm to 11pm, Monday to Friday, midday to 11.30pm on Saturdays, and midday to 11pm on Sundays and bank holidays.'

Train service between Moscow and North Korea's Pyongyang to resume this month, says Russia
(Reuters) -Russia and North Korea plan to restart a direct passenger train service between Moscow and the North Korean capital Pyongyang this month for the first time since 2020, Russia's state-owned rail monopoly said on Monday. Russian Railways said it had agreed with North Korea's railways ministry to resume a twice-monthly service between the two capitals on June 17, a journey it said took eight days and which, at over 10,000 km (6,213 miles), was the longest direct rail journey in the world. Another service between Pyongyang and Khabarovsk, a Russian city close to China's northeastern border, will restart two days later. The services will be operated by Korean State Railway, the state operator, and in the case of the Moscow-Pyongyang route will see a North Korean passenger railcar hitched to the regular Moscow-Vladivostok service and then re-attached to another train. Passenger rail traffic between Russia and North Korea was suspended in February 2020 at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Moscow and Pyongyang have since ratcheted up cooperation, including in the military sphere since President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty last year. North Korea confirmed in late April that it had sent more than 10,000 troops and weapons to Russia to assist in its war in Ukraine, aid which proved crucial for Moscow in recapturing Russia's western Kursk region from Ukraine. The two countries already operate a passenger rail service between Vladivostok in Russia's Far East and Rason, a North Korean port city. The nations are also linked by freight rail networks, although Russia does not disclose the size of the cargo traffic.
