Boca Raton High senior killed in I-95 crash hours after graduation ceremony
Hendry Aceituno Gudiño filed into the Expo Center at the South Florida Fairgrounds on Saturday afternoon in his blue cap and gown alongside his fellow Boca Raton Community High School seniors as 'Pomp and Circumstance' played, parents and relatives pointing their cellphone cameras at their smiling faces. Aceituno Gudiño posed for his photo with Principal Suzanne King and crossed the stage. What should have been the next chapter of his life was cut short only hours later. Aceituno Gudiño was killed in a car crash on Interstate 95 that evening, 'on what was supposed to be one of the happiest days of his life,' a GoFundMe online fundraiser created on behalf of his mother said. His mother, Anielka Gudiño, told WPTV-Ch. 5 that her son, his girlfriend and his girlfriend's father were all riding together when they crashed. Martin County Fire Rescue responded to the single-car crash near Mile Marker 110 just before 9 p.m. Saturday night, said Public Information Officer Cory Pippin. Two of the car's three occupants, both men, were pronounced dead at the scene. The surviving woman was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Pippin did not have further information about those in the car or about the circumstances of the crash. A Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson did not respond to an email or voicemail seeking further information Tuesday. The Martin County Sheriff's Office deferred to FHP, the lead investigating agency. 'Hendry was a young man full of life, with a huge heart and dreams to fulfill,' the GoFundMe said. 'His smile, his energy, and his kindness left a lasting impression on all of us who were fortunate enough to know him. Now, his sudden passing leaves us with immense sorrow, but also with the responsibility to bid him farewell with the love and respect he deserves.' King sent a message to families and school staff Monday announcing the death without naming the graduate. 'On behalf of our school community, I will be reaching out to the student's family to express our heartfelt condolences and offer support,' King's message said. 'As parents and caregivers, you may find that your child is processing this loss differently. For some, this may be the first time they have experienced the death of a peer or someone in their community. I encourage all of us to approach conversations about this with care, compassion, and respect.' This is a developing story, so check back for updates. County board hears ARPA project update
Construction crews continue to make headway with renovations and upgrades at the Stephens County Fair and Expo Center. Butch Lawson, construction manager at-risk with Hope Equipment and Construction, gave a brief update for the American Rescue Plan Act projects for the Stephens County Fairgrounds and Stephens County Courthouse during a routine meeting Monday. Lawson said the fairground upgrades are making progress. He said crews continue to work on renovation projects, such as the masons, metal stud framers, concrete and metal building crews. He said HVAC crews are set to begin rooftop units. For the courthouse, Lawson said the demolition crews are making good progress. 'Things are moving in the right direction,' he said. Next, county officials opened discussion for a piece of property located at 1234 W. Maple in Duncan. In a previous meeting, Churchman said the house near the courthouse parking lot is available for purchase. He said the owners would take the 2015 appraisal of $34,000. Last week, County Commissioners picked the agenda item up for further discussion and the board voted to pursue the purchase of the property, contingent on the 2015 appraisal of $34,000. On Monday, May 19, Churchman said the board would have to pay the administrative fees, like closing costs, attorney fees and abstract fees. He said the fees would come to around $1,151. Commissioner Russell Morgan made a motion to pay the closing costs for the property. The board approved the motion with a 3-0 vote. In another segment, the county board convened into an executive session to discuss case number CIV-23-646-HE for Josette Ford, administrator of the Estate of Michael Ford, deceased, versus Board of County Commissioners for Stephens County with the United States District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma. After spending about an hour and 10 minutes behind closed doors the board return to open session. With a recommendation from District Attorney Jason Hicks, Chairman Todd Churchman made a motion to authorize Commissioner Kreg Murphree to attend and negotiate mediation and litigation for Stephens County. The board approved the motion with a 3-0 vote. In the fairground report, Morgan said the fairgrounds crew are now preparing for Duncan High School's graduation ceremony Thursday, May 22. In other news, the board approved: • Executing a county deed property acquired at resale for a tract of land in the City of Duncan. • Accepting a donation for 475 tons of one and a half inches of crusher run from Continental Resources. • Accepting a letter of resignation from fair board member Patrick Jones, and affirming the appointment of Michael White to represent District #3 with a term set to expire January 2027. White will replace Jones on the fair board. • A fairground agreement for a Lifeline Screening of America health screening event in the Winchester Room Aug. 25. Due the Memorial Day holiday, the Stephens County Commissioners will convene for the next weekly meeting at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 27 at their office, located inside the Stephens County Courthouse.

Taylor County Expo Center expands parking lot repaving project
ABILENE, Texas () – The Taylor County Expo Center is adding to its large-scale paving project to prolong the life of the new parking lots. More work and improvements are underway at the Taylor County Expo Center. Right now, the parking lots are seeing some much-needed attention with a massive repaving project, but officials from the expo center have noticed a few other areas of improvement they would like to add to the project. The funding for this project comes from a government relief program designed to help cities with economic stimulation since the COVID-19 pandemic. The expo center's funding showed some excess financing, known as contingency funding, and the expo center's General Manager, Rochelle Johnson, explains the concept for its use. 'Any time you do a construction project, there's always a contingency that set aside because you never know, especially with an existing facility, you never know what you're going to run into,' Rochelle Johnson said. These funds are usually used when a mistake is made on a construction site or when additional infrastructure relevant to the original project needs to be added. In this case, the expo center is concentrating on improvements to help prolong the lifespan of the new pavement in the parking lots. These changes include updated drainage, allowing safer and more comfortable conditions for anyone visiting the expo center. As Johnson explains, this has been an issue in past events. 'When it rains, I've got people stepping out of their RV in two or three inches of water. And so that's going to help both the spectators as well as the exhibitors,' Johnson said. A proposal for the added improvements for the project went before the Taylor County Commissioners at the most recent Commissioners meeting, and Precinct 2 Commissioner Kyle Kendrick proposed outside bidding for one of the projects that would see a reinforced concrete slab for large dumpsters that are in heavy use for the Expo Center. Kendrick outlined how this portion of the new projects would be the most costly and was keen on trying to reduce that cost. 'I'd like to save money everywhere we can because we know that we're going to run into more issues along the way. So, I mean, just like the other day, we had the little incident where we had to raise those electrical boxes up, and that was about a $1,900 bill right there. So, I mean, every dollar that we can save is that much better,' said Kendrick As the additional improvements would be free of cost to the overall project, the Taylor County Commissioners Court ultimately voted to proceed with the additions to the expo center.
