Man claims trial to attempted murder of cops in Kuching
KUCHING (April 23): A 41-year-old man pleaded not guilty in the Magistrates' Court here today to the attempted murder of two policemen using a four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle last month.
Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan fixed May 26 for pre-trial case management before releasing Mark Lionel Micheal on RM3,000 bail with one surety.
Mark allegedly committed the offence framed under Section 307 of the Penal Code at Jalan Green here between 3.30am and 3.40am on March 29.
According to the investigation, Mark allegedly drove his 4WD vehicle at speed towards policemen on duty on the road.
In a separate courtroom, Mark was also charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing policemen in the discharge of their public functions.
Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan ordered for him to be released on RM2,000 cash bail with one surety after fixing May 27 for pre-trial case management.
According to the charge, Mark allegedly obstructed policemen on duty by refusing to stop his vehicle when asked to and instead attempting to escape from police on pursuit at a Jalan Green bus stop.
Mark was represented by defence counsel Andrew Winston Kaya, while the prosecution was handled by Insp Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin.
On April 7, passengers Rogers Diana, 42, and Desmond Naud, 35, who were Mark's passengers in the 4WD vehicle, were each sentenced to eight months in jail after they pleaded guilty to obstructing policemen from discharging their duties.
In a statement on March 30, Kuching acting police chief Supt Merbin Lisa said three men, aged 39, 41, and 43, were arrested after attempting to flee from a police chase in a 4WD vehicle on Green Road during the wee hours of March 29.
He said the driver of the 4WD attempted to ram a patrol vehicle with three police officers inside, prompting one of the officers to fire a shot at the vehicle and causing it to crash.
Merbin said the gunshot hit the 41-year-old suspect and he was sent to hospital to receive treatment.
According to him, all the suspects, two of whom had prior drug-related criminal records, tested positive for drugs.

Civil servant among seven remanded over RM139k false claims
MELAKA: Seven people comprising a civil servant and six contractors were remanded for five days starting today to assist in investigations into allegations of submitting false claims totalling RM139,000 last year. The remand order until Monday against the suspects, aged 32 to 52, was issued by magistrate N. Sivashangari after receiving an application from the Melaka Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). According to a source, all the suspects were detained between 11.24am and 12.05pm yesterday when they appeared to give statements at the Melaka MACC office. "They are being investigated for the offence of submitting supply work documents involving six different companies to obtain claims for the supply of food and beverage services totalling RM139,100 when the supply was never carried out," said the source. The case is being investigated under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009 which, if convicted, carries a fine not less than five times the value of the false items or RM10,000, whichever is higher, and imprisonment not exceeding 20 years.

Business couple pleads not guilty to RM3.6 million false claim charges

KOTA KINABALU: A husband-and-wife business duo have claimed trial to charges of abetting a company director in submitting false claims amounting to more than RM3.6 million to the Department of Industrial Development and Research (DIDR). Anita Mohamed, 54, and Ang Ka Fat @ Kenny, 57, pleaded not guilty to their respective charges when brought before Sessions Court Judge Jason Juga on Thursday. Both face two separate charges each, as well as one joint charge, over the alleged offences. The charges were framed under Section 28(1)(c) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, read together with Section 18 of the same Act, and punishable under Section 24(2). Upon conviction, the provision carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence and a fine of at least five times the value of the false particulars, or RM10,000, whichever is higher. The documents were allegedly submitted to an administrative assistant at the DIDR office between 2022 and 2023. Man, 81, burns care centre following row with caretaker
PADANG BESAR: An elderly man allegedly set fire to a senior citizens' care centre in Kaki Bukit today after he was denied permission to travel to Kangar with his girlfriend to get a hearing aid. Padang Besar district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Shokri Abdullah said preliminary investigations into the 8.31am incident revealed that the facility housed 20 elderly residents, one of whom is believed to have started the fire. "Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the care centre showed that the blaze was believed to have been ignited by an 81-year-old male resident. "The suspect allegedly started the fire in a cupboard in the kitchen area, which then spread to the main hall, destroying about 50 per cent of the space," he said in a statement today. Shokri said investigations later found that the act was fuelled by the suspect's dissatisfaction with the centre's caretaker. "The suspect was reportedly upset after being refused permission to travel to Kangar to get a hearing aid with his girlfriend, who is also a resident at the centre. "The estimated losses are still being assessed," he said, adding that the suspect has been arrested and later released on police bail. The case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire, which carries a maximum 14 years' imprisonment and a fine upon conviction. Meanwhile, a Perlis Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the blaze damaged about 50 per cent of the building's structure. "Firefighters from the Padang Besar fire and rescue station were dispatched to the scene after we received an emergency call at 8.32am. "They used a 60-metre hose line with two water jets to bring the fire under control by 9.31am. "No injuries were reported, and the operation ended at 9.34am," the spokesman said.
