Dave Mustaine claims he was left without credit for songs that 'made' Metallica
Dave Mustaine has claimed he penned "a lot of" music that "made" Metallica.
Before he co-founded thrash metal band Megadeth, Mustaine was the lead guitarist for Metallica, though he was dismissed from the band before their debut album in 1983.
In a recent interview, the 63-year-old rocker admitted he was left "p***** off" after the band allegedly went ahead and used his riffs - despite him telling them not to use his music.
Asked whether it was his booze habit that led to his departure, Mustaine told 'The Shawn Ryan Show': "We all drank. That's why they called it Alcoholica. I mean, they didn't call it Dave-Alcoholica. We all drank. And they continued to drink like that even after I was gone. But that was, I think, the beginning of the end.'
Mustaine then shared that he had left Metallica with a tape of his riffs.
He went on: 'Just me playing and playing and playing… We took that tape player and the reel of tape with us out to New York.
'We did two shows out there, and after those two shows, they woke me up one morning and said, 'Look, you're out of the band.'
'And I said, 'What are you talking about?' 'You're out of the band.' I said, 'No warning? No second chance? You're not gonna give me a warning? You're just gonna kick me out?' And I thought that was unfair. And it showed a grotesque lack of character. And so that p***** me off and was a huge part of the fuel.
'But at the time, I was really mad and I didn't wanna forgive them for what they did.
'And I told them when I left, 'Do not use my music. And of course they used it.'
Mustaine claims Metallica tracks such as 'Ride The Lightning', 'The Call Of Ktulu', 'Phantom Lord', 'Metal Militia', 'Jump In The Fire', and 'The Four Horsemen' contain his riffs.
He added: 'And I wrote a bunch of Leper Messiah [on Metallica's third album, Master Of Puppets] too. They didn't give me credit on that.
'You listen to the riffs, you know they're my riffs. It's, like, you think I'm gonna all of a sudden hear my riff and say, 'That's not me.' So, yeah, I wrote a lot of their music that made them, and all the solos on that first record were mine – the best Kirk [Hammett, Mustaine's replacement] could try and copy them.'

Celebrity tattoo artist Certified Letter Boy partners with Dave's Hot Chicken for opening of new Soho studio
David Beckham's tattoo artist Certified Letter Boy is opening his new studio in Soho with free tattoos and a year's worth of Dave's Hot Chicken. The tattoo artist, who has also inked David's son Romeo Beckham and rapper Central Cee, is opening his Fine Line Hearts Club studio on Saturday (31.05.25) and is joining forces with the famous US chicken brand Dave's Hot Chicken to mark the occasion. The one-off event will feature free tattoos, exclusive flashes and serious spice as Fine Line Hearts Club transforms into a tattoo-meets-chicken hotspot. Fans will be able to walk in from 11am, flash the Dave's app and choose from a range of custom flashes created exclusively for the collaboration. Booking is not required and those who arrive first will be inked first. Fans of both Certified Letter Boy's iconic ink and Dave's Nashville-style heat will be treated to a menu of spice-inspired flash tattoos – ranging from 'Reaper' flames' to 'Hot Stuff' lettering – all designed by the tattoo artist himself. This is a rare opportunity to get a free inking from Certified Letter Boy, who has a waiting list of a year and usually charges a minimum of £1,000 for his services. Once inside, guests can choose a pre-designed flash or work together with Certified Letter Boy on something more personal. Either way, the ink is free. I'm a very boring person these days, says Dave Franco
Dave Franco is a "very boring person these days". The 39-year-old actor played a drugged-up, wild version of himself in 'The Studio', the Seth Rogen-created comedy show, and Dave relished the experience of playing a character who is a so distinct from his real-life self. The Hollywood star told People: "I take it to a level where it becomes kind of toxic positivity. But yes, it's very fun to play a part that is very different than who I am. "I mean, I am a very boring person these days in my personal life. I do not go to Vegas. I barely even drink. I definitely don't do drugs." Dave and his wife Alison Brie now consider an "exciting night" to involve "staying home and watching a documentary". The actor - who has been married Alison since 2017 - added: "It's very fun to play something that's very different than my normal life." 'The Studio' was recently renewed for a second season, and Dave is looking forward to reprising his role. Asked how he might approach the role in season two, Dave said: "I mean, I feel like we can't do the same manic positivity, so maybe I've gone hard the other direction, where I'm now in a deep depression. Earlier this month, Seth revealed that he wrote 'The Studio' with Dave "specifically" in mind for a role. The comedy star relished working with his long-time friend on the project. Seth, 43, told People: "Honestly, there were very few people that could have filled the roles that the people had filled because we really specifically were catering the stories to certain traits that celebrities have." Seth was convinced that Dave was the perfect candidate for the role. He said: "With Dave, it's like, who do you believe would be in a Ron Howard movie? It's a pretty dramatic movie, who could do that? But also, we knew that he would come back and do this truly ridiculous, stupid thing later in the season."
