Perth surfer's plea to find local hero who ‘saved' her legs

Perth Now2 days ago
A Perth local paddled out to a popular surf spot when disaster struck, leaving her in need of major surgery — but a kind act from a local surfer might just have saved her arms and legs.
Dominique Ploegmakers headed to Trigg Beach on August 7 for a morning surf with her partner Joel and sister-in-law, Eron. While Joel paddled out the back, Ms Ploegmakers stayed in the shallows to surf with Eron close to the Trigg SLSC.
Despite thinking she was safe in the shallows, a huge wave approached the shore, leaving Ms Ploegmakers in the 'danger zone.'
She tried to get under the wave by flipping the board upside down and holding onto the rails while underwater, but the power of the wave tumbled her in the whitewash.
'I tried to do a turtle roll because I didn't want to ditch my board in case I hurt somebody, but just misjudged the size and power of the wave quite badly and ended up getting dumped, my board hit me on the head,' Ms Ploegmakers told PerthNow. 'When I finally surfaced I was so so dizzy and disoriented.'
Ms Ploegmakers was immediately assisted by a surfer who saw the wipe out occur and was straight on hand to help.
'This other surfer was there straight away asking if I was alright and helped carry my board and steady me with Eron under my other arm. He and Eron helped me down on the beach where I laid down and got some help from the lifeguards and then the ambo's took me to the hospital from there,' Ms Ploegmakers said. Ms Ploegmakers had to undergo major surgery to realign her spine and is waiting for a second surgery on August 14 which will involve titanium plating around her C5-T1.
Miraculously, doctors have assured Ms Ploegmakers that she doesn't have any neurological defects so far, which is partly due to the fact that she had two people to help her out of the water and keep her as still as possible.
Ms Ploegmakers has shared details of the accident on Facebook, in an attempt to find the kind local who helped her get to shore.
'He was probably mid 30's, moustache, short board I think,' Ms Ploegmakers wrote in the caption.
'This guy potentially saved my arms and legs!! Just wanted to say I'm so thankful.'
The post has more than 400 reactions and many were quick to comment on how lucky the young Aussie was.
'Wow...so lucky you still have mobility after that ...I had a similar injury 20 years ago and was told I'd never surf again,' one person said.
'What a save that was!!! So glad this awesome guy was out there to help you. I've just gone through spinal surgery myself, so props to you,' another person commented.
Ms Ploegmakers is keen to find the kind man who helped her and has urged anyone who knows who this might be to make contact with her, or alternatively with PerthNow.
'I'm really looking forward to getting back on my feet, hopefully we find this guy!' she told PerthNow.

Aussie mum viciously branded a 'monster' by trolls for lasering birthmark on her baby's face reveals what her son, 3, looks like now

An Aussie mum who was branded a "monster" for lasering a large birthmark on her baby boy's face has revealed what the three-year-old looks like now. Brooke Atkins, 36, in 2022 welcomed her second child Kinglsey, who was born with a large port-wine stain (PWS) covering the right side of his face. PWS is a permanent birthmark which takes on a reddish or blueish colour and is caused by the malfunction of blood vessels in the skin. If it is located around the eyes and forehead, the staining can cause underlying conditions like epilepsy or eye problems such as glaucoma. In Kingsley's case, he has glaucoma as well as Sturge Weber Syndrome, another hallmark of the birthmark, which sees him suffer from seizures. Brooke, from the Gold Coast, Queensland, used six laser treatments over two years to treat Kingsley's PWS despite criticism from online trolls. Ignoring those who called her "brainwashed" and claimed the move was more for her than her son, Brooke has recently taken to social media to show Kingsley's PWS is barely visible now after the light beam therapy. The now three-year-old can be seen with a very dilated purple undertone to the right side of his face, a far cry from the intense violet shade it was. In TikTok footage, Kinglsey smiled and giggled with his older sister Amarni as the siblings played at home, and he appeared happy after the treatment. Those who had not been following Brooke and Kingsley's journey with treating his PWS would arguably never suspect he was born with it. However the mum-of-two still remembers the vicious trolling she received from strangers when she decided with her partner, Kewene Wallace, 30, to laser their son's birthmark six months after he was born. "That birthmark is barely visible, what you're doing to him is horrible," one person wrote, among many other people who supported the decision. Another person accused Brooke of making her son "insecure the second he gets out of the womb". Brooke addressed the reception she received and said when she first started reading the negative comments, she cried for a good half hour. "I had a whole heap of mum guilt, and it made me question my decision," the mum of two said. "Even though I knew I was doing the right thing, the cruel words still played in my head. "I just wish these people had known about the health issues connected to these types of birthmarks before writing these things. "This wasn't for cosmetic reasons, and as parents, this was the hardest decision we have had to make. Brooke still has a long road ahead after the many treatments Kingsley has undergone in his life, including three eye surgeries for glaucoma, as well as having had more than 100 seizures, which he still suffers from. Nevertheless, circumstances took a positive turn in July when Brooke said Kingsley was "doing really well" after recovering from "a few sicknesses".

Cadbury's Marvellous Creations sharebag recalled after ‘foreign' matter found in product

A popular Cadbury chocolate block sold across Aussie supermarkets has been recalled amid concerns about 'foreign' matter in the product. Cadbury Australia is conducting a recall of its 10-piece share bag of Marvellous Creations with jelly and popping candy beanies. The 160g chocolate is sold at Coles, Woolworths, Drakes, The Reject Shop, IGA and independent retailers across the country. The company says the product may contain plastic, which could cause illness or injury if consumed. 'Consumers should not eat this product … (and) should return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund,' the recall notice issued by Food Standards Australia states. 'Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice.' The recall covers Marvellous Creations products with a best before date of May 21, 2026. The company says no other Cadbury Australia products have been affected by the recall.
