Turkish opposition leader attacked in Istanbul, raising fears over politicians' safety

The leader of Turkey's main opposition party was attacked as he left a memorial ceremony in Istanbul on Sunday.
Ozgur Ozel, who heads the Republican People's Party, or CHP, was leaving the Ataturk Cultural Center in the city center when a white-haired man approached him and struck him in the face with an open hand, televised footage showed.
The suspect was detained, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office said. Ozel, who was attending a memorial for Sirri Sureyya Onder , a pro-Kurdish politician who died Saturday, was said to be unhurt.
The incident renews fears over the security of politicians in Turkey. In 2019, Ozel's predecessor as CHP leader, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, was assaulted while attending a soldier's funeral in Ankara province.

Turkish Prosecutors Investigate Main Opposition Leader in Crackdown

Prosecutors have opened an investigation into the leader of Türkiye's main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) on charges of threatening and insulting Istanbul's chief prosecutor, adding to a broad crackdown on the opposition. The clampdown is centred on Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who is President Tayyip Erdogan's main political rival and leads him in some opinion polls. The CHP's Imamoglu was jailed in March pending trial on corruption charges, which he denies, according to Reuters. The Istanbul prosecutor's office said in a statement that it had launched the probe into CHP leader Ozgur Ozel over comments he made about the chief prosecutor at a rally in Istanbul on Wednesday, criticising the targeting of the opposition. CHP spokesman Deniz Yucel criticised the decision to open the investigation. "We will not succumb to this system of lawlessness that you have created," he said on X, addressing the authorities. In another step, Türkiye's Interior Ministry dismissed three Istanbul district mayors who were arrested this week as part of the corruption investigations at the municipality, state media said on Thursday. The ministry also removed from their posts two mayors who were arrested under the same investigations in the southern province of Adana, state-owned Anadolu news agency reported. All five of these mayors are from the CHP. Imamoglu's arrest in March triggered mass protests, economic turmoil and broad accusations of government influence over the judiciary and anti-democratic applications. The government denies the accusations and says the judiciary is independent. Since his arrest, authorities have detained dozens of CHP members, officials from the Istanbul municipality, and other CHP-run municipalities. Access to Imamoglu's X account was also blocked in Türkiye this month.

Türkiye Arrests Five Mayors from CHP Opposition Party

Turkish police arrested five opposition mayors early Wednesday alongside 17 others as part of a probe into corruption allegations at CHP-held municipalities, a party spokesman told AFP. The latest arrests targeted a former lawmaker and three CHP mayors in Istanbul, and two more in the southern province of Adana, the spokesman said. The latest round of arrests brings to nine the total number of jailed CHP mayors, including Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu -- the main political rival to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The latest investigation began at the weekend when a court issued arrest orders for 47 municipal officials in connection with four separate corruption investigations centered on Istanbul, local media reported. The March 19 arrest and jailing of Imamoglu sparked the biggest street protests Türkiye had seen in more than a decade. Police had already detained nearly 70 people in subsequent raids linked to alleged corruption at Istanbul City Hall, including Imamoglu's private secretary and his private protection officer. The CHP has nominated Imamoglu as its candidate in presidential elections due in 2028 but whether he can run in the elections depends on the fate of numerous trials and probes.
