Messi returns to MLS with spectacular double in Inter victory
Lionel Messi scored two brilliant goals to lift Inter Miami to a 4-1 victory over Montreal in Miami's return to Major League Soccer action on Saturday in the wake of their elimination from the Club World Cup.
Miami were playing their first MLS game in more than a month. They had advanced past the first phase of the Club World Cup but fell 4-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16 last week.
Messi made sure there was no lingering let-down for Javier Mascherano's side, who are aiming to improve on their curent sixth place in the Eastern Conference with 32 points from 17 matches.
'It is a great night, we took the three points that were very necessary to start thinking about the MLS again,' Mascherano said. 'It is never easy to reintegrate into the competition after the Club World Cup, and the players have done it perfectly.'

On a day for pure sprinters and with no change at the top of the overall rankings, LidlTrek's Milan was the first Italian to win a stage on the Tour since Vincenzo Nibali in the Alps in 2019. The remaining 177 riders from the original 184 rolled through the Brittany countryside with the harvest ongoing a month early and colossal crowds on the roadside. Under clear blue skies and 31 degrees Celsius (88 degrees Fahrenheit) heat there was little inspiration in the peloton to breakaway until late in the day. French duo Mathieu Burgaudeau and Matteo Vercher attacked from 70km and the pair were only reeled in on the edge of finish town Laval after enthusiastic support on this Tour, which is based entirely on French soil but with no home winner yet. Stage nine on Sunday heads south from Chinon to Chateauroux and is another flat affair with the focus on keeping hydrated in the heat and staying in the saddle. But on France's national holiday on Monday there are eight classified climbs and many more besides in a stage loaded with opportunities.

Pakistan Pulls Out of Hockey Tournaments in India Over Security Concerns
Pakistan has decided not to send its hockey teams to India for upcoming international tournaments, citing security concerns following recent tensions between the two countries, government sources told AFP on Saturday. Skipping the Asia Cup may cost them a spot in the 2026 World Cup, set to be held in the Netherlands and Belgium. Another government official confirmed the withdrawal. The Foreign Office has yet to comment officially. Sporting relations between the two nations have been strained for years, especially after the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Since then, India has suspended most bilateral sporting ties with Pakistan. The countries only face each other in neutral venues during global events. Earlier this year, India refused to visit Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, leading to the final being held in Dubai instead. In response, Pakistan has now decided not to send its women's cricket team to India for the upcoming 50-over World Cup and the T20 World Cup in 2026. They will instead play those matches in Sri Lanka. Pakistan's men's hockey team last played in India during the 2023 Asian Champions Trophy, where they finished fifth out of six teams.

Alcaraz battles into Wimbledon final
AFP | London Carlos Alcaraz reached his third successive Wimbledon final as the defending champion battled to a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (8/6) win against American fifth seed Taylor Fritz yesterday. With Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio watching from the stands, Alcaraz survived a titanic clash lasting two hours and 49 minutes in searing temperatures on Centre Court. As the mercury rose close to 32 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit), play was interrupted by several fans taken ill, but Alcaraz kept his cool to subdue the big-serving Fritz with his sublime returns and immaculate serving of his own. The 22-year-old will play seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic or world number one Jannik Sinner in Sunday's final. Alcaraz has beaten Djokovic in the past two Wimbledon finals and holds an 8-4 edge over Sinner in their 12 meetings. Back to his best after an inconsistent start to the tournament, the world number two looks in the mood to extend his reign at the All England C lub. The five-time Grand Slam champion is on a career-best 24-match winning streak since losing to Holger Rune in the Barcelona final in April. That blistering run has brought him an epic French Open final triumph against Sinner and titles in Rome, Monte Carlo and at Queen's Club. Having dropped just four of 24 points on his serve in the first set, the Spaniard found himself under fire in the second. Fritz pounced on a rare sloppy game from Alcaraz to take the set when the Spaniard produced an ill-timed double-fault and two costly unforced errors. The nerveless Alcaraz was unfazed by that threat and quickly regained the momentum, running Fritz ragged with a deft drop-shot followed by a perfect lob to break in the third game of the third set. With Alcaraz's serve virtually flawless, he added another break for good measure to secure a two sets to one lead. In a dramatic fourth set tiebreak, Fritz went from 4-1 down to 6-4 up, only for Alcaraz to save both set points. Alcaraz scented victory and one last flurry of piercing ground-strokes secured his latest final berth.
