Two children dead after sailboat and barge collision near Hibiscus Island, officials say
At approximately 11:30 a.m., Coast Guard Sector Miami received a report from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue of a collision between a sailboat and a barge near Hibiscus Island.
Officials said six people, an adult female counselor and five children ranging in age from 8 to 12, entered the water. The sailboat sank following the impact.
Three victims were transported to Miami-Dade Marina and two were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. One person remains unresponsive, according to the Coast Guard.
Florida Fish and Wildlife officials said their officers responded to the crash along with multiple agencies.
A collective dive and water rescue effort involved Miami Beach Fire Rescue, City of Miami Fire Rescue, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and law enforcement from both cities.
One child and the adult counselor were evaluated at the scene but were not hospitalized.
The Coast Guard is leading the investigation, which remains ongoing.
The Miami Yacht Club confirmed that an incident occurred earlier today on the water involving youth participants of the Miami Youth Sailing Foundation.
"At this time, details are still emerging, and we are actively gathering all available facts. Our priority is the safety and well-being of everyone involved, and we are working closely with the appropriate authorities and organizations to understand the situation fully."

Miami's sailing community is 'shattered by grief' after a third child died Sunday, six days after a sailboat and barge collision in Biscayne Bay, the Miami Yacht Club said. The collision happened between Monument and Hibiscus Islands around 11 a.m. July 28. Florio said the Coast Guard would conduct a thorough investigation and would be joined by investigators from Argentina, 'the home nation of one of the victims.' The Chilean National Maritime Authority (DIRECTEMAR) had also been invited to join the investigation, the Coast Guard said. In a statement July 31, the Coast Guard said both people on the tug and barge as well as the sailboat operator had tested negative for drugs and alcohol. The yacht club said the children were in their last week of a sailing camp for children aged 7-15, The Associated Press previously reported. Florida Boat Collision MIAMI (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard says a third child has died nearly a week after a barge struck and sank a boat during a sailing camp near Miami. All six people on the sailboat were pulled from the water after the collision, and four kids were rushed to a hospital where two were pronounced dead last Monday. A 10-year-old girl who was in critical condition died on Sunday, according to a Coast Guard statement. 'Our hearts continue to mourn with all those impacted by Monday's tragic incident, especially with the passing of another one of Miami's children today,' Coast Guard Capt. Frank Florio said. Officials didn't immediately identify any of the victims or release a cause for the crash. Salvage operations began Tuesday. 'The Coast Guard remains committed to conducting a thorough investigation to ensure all facts are uncovered," Florio said. The collision between a barge and the sailboat occurred in Biscayne Bay, between Miami and Miami Beach. Everyone on the sailboat, a teenage sailing camp counselor and five children, ended up in the water. They were in their last week of a camp for children aged 7 to 15, according to the Miami Yacht Club. A 7-year-old girl and a 13-year-old girl were pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. An 8-year-old girl was in critical condition as of Tuesday.
