Meet The Startup That Makes Quitting Cigarettes, Vaping And Zyn Cool

Hilary Dubin realized she was addicted to Juul, the nicotine vape that went viral and has since been blamed for hooking teens around the country, while she was at a California ski lodge in 2017. She was 22 at the time and Dubin and her boyfriend found a Juul laying on the floor. They picked it up, took a hit, and found that it still worked.
'We're like, 'Oh well, we didn't buy it, we just happened to find it, and now it's ours,'' says the 30-year-old Dubin. '[Looking back], it's pretty embarrassing now.'
A few years later, Dubin's childhood friend Caroline Vasquez Huber realized she had a Juul addiction after moving back home during the Covid pandemic in 2020. She was vaping all day and knew she had to quit.
'Within a few days, I was miserable,' says Huber, who is also 30.
Huber's mother, a doctor, estimated that she was vaping about 40 cigarettes worth of nicotine a day. They went to the pharmacy, and she swapped her Juul for nicotine-laced mints. But the medical-looking royal blue bottles of nicotine lozenges embarrassed her.
'You pull out a Nicorette, and it looks like you have a disease,' says Huber. 'I just found the product so shameful.'

After Huber walked Dubin through how to quit herself, they had an idea: launch a nicotine-replacement-therapy company—but make it cool. In the summer of 2022, the duo applied to an accelerator program at New York University and received a $10,000 grant. They won a pitch competition at the end of the course, earning $1.1 million in pre-seed funding from investors including Good Friends (started by the founders of Warby Parker, Allbirds and the razor company Harry's) and started developing an app that uses cognitive behavioral therapy and positive encouragement to help people quit cigarettes, vapes and pouches that customers use in conjunction with nicotine lozenges. After a year of development, Jones, as their new venture was named, launched in November 2023 and raised a $3.9 million seed round from Founder Collective, Next View, and others.
This week, Jones announced it has closed a $10 million Series A round, which Forbes estimates values the company at around $45 million. The company will use the capital to develop new nicotine products, hire more employees and market the company. Jones generated $5 million in revenue last year and has a goal to reach $10 million in sales by the end of 2025.
The latest startup in the stodgy, highly regulated $3 billion (global annual sales) nicotine replacement therapy market, Jones does not manufacture its NRT lozenges—it buys them from a third-party, FDA-approved manufacturer. And, yes, they do come in those bright blue bottles, the same ones generic NRTs sold at Walgreens and CVS are packaged in. But Jones includes a stylish tin that users can put their mints in to make the experience more chic. The company, which says its customer base is 60% women and 40% men, is also collaborating with the Los Angeles jewelry brand Monbouquette to make a petite sterling silver lozenge box, which will sell for $295 and can also be used as a necklace. During New York Fashion Week, Jones passed out tins of its lozenges to models backstage during Jonathan Cohen, Kallmeyer, and Tanner Fletcher's shows.
The brand is also trying to modernize the marketing and approach of existing NRTs. Jones is using the same approach Warby Parker did for eyeglasses and what Hims is doing for hair-loss treatments and erectile dysfunction drugs. Make buying nicotine, generic Viagra and glasses cool, easy and not embarrassing. However, there is a big difference between Jones and Hims—nicotine replacement therapy is an over-the-counter medicine, so customers do not need a prescription from a doctor.
The NRT market is currently dominated by large, multibillion-dollar pharmaceutical companies, like Johnson & Johnson, which makes the Nicorette brand of products, the GlaxoSmithKline spinoff Haleon Group and Perrigo. There are innovative solutions afoot, too: Virginia-based Qnovia is developing a nicotine nebulizer that it hopes to get approved by the FDA. But there are more than enough prospective quitters to go around. With 28 million smokers in America, cigarettes remain the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States—killing 480,000 people a year. Which means Jones is operating in a sizeable market that needs more solutions.
Jaclyn Freeman Hester, a partner at Foundry, which led Jones' Series A round, says she was convinced to invest in the company because she believes Jones has disrupted the current market offerings and is reaching a customer base not being served by generic brands.
'Is this a big problem that matters? Yes, it's a massive problem,' she says, explaining that most people who smoke or vape want to quit but are unsuccessful. 'The simple concept is that smoking has modernized, and quitting hasn't [until now].'
Jones has also built a culture defined by grace, the founders say, something people addicted to nicotine, and other drugs and substances for that matter, do not get enough while trying to quit. (Studies have found that a typical person addicted to cigarettes tries to quit unsuccessfully about 8 to 10 times.) The Jones app allows customers to pick specific goals—stop completely, or taper down your use.
'We are judgement-free,' says Huber. 'Cut back, quit, do whatever you want. For Jones, if you slip up, that's okay. We celebrate progress over perfection.'
And how have Jones' founders faired in their attempts to quit? Well, they don't vape anymore, but they still use their own product. 'I love nicotine,' says Huber. 'I use NRT every day.'

When Marian Barry's mother died in 2014, the Arizona nurse knew she needed a change. For years, her life had revolved around taking care of her aging parents and working as a cardiac nurse just outside Phoenix. A colleague suggested travel nursing — well-paid work that would let her explore the country. After three months in Alaska, Barry knew it was the life for her. She sold her house of 16 years in Mesa, bought an RV she named Myrna, and roamed the Western US, working in a slew of hospitals and meeting all sorts of people along the way. She "absolutely loved" being a nurse and thought she'd work well into her golden years. But when the pandemic hit, that changed. Watching countless patients suffer and die without family at their bedside was agonizing. "It was hell. It was horrible being in the hospital," Barry said. After 30 years of nursing, she started thinking about retirement. She'd stayed in some national and state parks while travel nursing and noticed that the park employees and volunteers she'd met seemed remarkably happy. So, she applied for a seasonal volunteer gig at Diamond Lake in Oregon. "After coming out of working the first 15 months of COVID in hospitals, it was like, 'Oh my gosh, I'm in nature. This is amazing. No mask, no PPE,'" she said. Now, she's a full-time so-called "work-camper," living and volunteering in parks with other itinerant folks like her, many of them also retirees. She spends her days kayaking, biking, and orienting visitors in the parks. She's letting her nursing license expire next year. "I just cannot imagine going back to any kind of stressful job," Barry, now 71, added. Barry is part of a much bigger trend. Work-camping in America's parks is a long-established lifestyle, particularly for older people in need of low-cost living or adventure, or both. But as Americans live longer and face rising housing costs on fixed or low incomes, it's only becoming more attractive. Living off Social Security Barry made good money as a nurse, but she doesn't have much in savings. So she lives off her monthly $2,972 Social Security checks. She's managing for now and is even splurging on a rental car for the summer. Living in an RV is pretty cheap. At the campgrounds, she gets a free full hook-up — including water, electricity, and sewer — in exchange for her work. She says it's been easy for her to live in a tiny space because she's "never been a things kind of person." And she spends much of her time outside. For the past four years, Barry has spent October through April at Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge in Nevada, 90 miles north of Vegas, and May through August at Beaver Creek State Natural Area on the coast of central Oregon. She takes September off for vacation. She loves the dramatic landscapes and has become a wildlife enthusiast. "I literally live in heaven," Barry said. "I absolutely love my life." She says she doesn't get lonely because she's made friends with her fellow volunteers and employees. And she spends her days chatting up visitors. "I like to talk to everybody," she said. Barry has become particularly popular in Oregon, where a beloved breed of blackberry, the marionberry, is grown. Locals and park visitors get a kick out of her name. "Every day when I say what my name is, they're like, 'Oh, I'll never forget that,'" she said. "I'm like a celebrity here." One group of fans brought her a marionberry pie. Barry, who never married or had kids, hopes to keep living in the parks in Oregon and Nevada for the rest of her life. Her siblings and other family members are scattered across the country. She jokes with one of her nieces, who lives on a farm in Indiana, that if she ever loses the ability to live independently, she'll park her RV in a field on her property and live out her days there. "Honestly, I have no long-term plan, that's just a fun thing to think about," she said.

The Most Vicious Cycle of All: Cardiac PTSD

Just surviving a major cardiac event is an achievement, but of course getting through whatever initial resuscitation and procedures necessary are merely the first steps. As a patient embarks on their rehabilitation journey, one incredibly dangerous setback cardiologists must be on the lookout for is cardiac posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This remarkably common complication — according to a 2004 study published in Critical Care Medicine , as many as 27% of those who survive cardiac events may develop PTSD — can not only cause noncompliance with medication and other ongoing treatment modalities but also put the patient at an increased risk for a second cardiac event. 'In the aftermath of cardiac arrest or a heart attack, one of the most overlooked aspects of recovery is the emotional toll it takes, said Srihari S. Naidu, MD, a professor of medicine at New York Medical College and director of the Cardiac Cath Labs at the Westchester Medical Center Health Network, both in Valhalla, New York. 'The experience can be deeply traumatic, not just for the patient, but for their loved ones as well. Despite this, mental health remains one of the least systematically addressed components of cardiac care.' One problem, Naidu said, is that we 'still, we lack standardized approaches to routinely screen, diagnose, and treat PTSD in this vulnerable population.' Indeed, the American Heart Association identified this as a problem in its 2020 scientific statement, Sudden Cardiac Arrest Survivorship. In this publication, the association said the coordination of multidisciplinary care, to include emotional care, must start as early as within the ICU, but that it needs to continue throughout the recovery period. Srihari S. Naidu, MD 'Without a coordinated plan during hospitalization to assess both short- and long-term recovery needs, we risk missing the broader picture,' said Naidu, who is also the president of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions. 'In my experience, the outpatient clinic visit is often the first, and sometimes the only, opportunity to uncover these issues, which may manifest as anxiety or persistent thoughts about the event, or a variety of unrelated symptoms.' James Jackson, MD, director of Behavioral Health and professor of medicine and psychiatry at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, said the symptoms are all united by one thing: The fact that the patient has the source of their trauma with them at all times. 'If you're carrying your heart around with you and the heart is the source of the trauma, you're constantly reminded, right? And if your cardiac event developed out of the blue, the concern is it could develop out of the blue again, right? So you're carrying this trauma around with you. It's a constant reminder,' he said. 'The trauma is not parked somewhere in the rear view. The trauma is sort of in the present and even in the future.' Symptom-wise, this trauma manifests itself in a variety of ways and can often go overlooked due to the focus on the physical recovery, Naidu said. 'During follow-up, subtle cues begin to emerge; patients who seem emotionally distant, who have trouble sleeping, or who avoid talking about what happened (can be red flags),' he said. 'PTSD doesn't always present dramatically.' Sometimes, Naidu said, it's the patient who suddenly bursts into tears when recalling the event. Other times, it's the one who avoids follow-ups, skips cardiac rehab, or steers clear of anything that reminds them of the hospital. Early symptoms may include hypervigilance, nightmares, intrusive memories, emotional numbness, and avoidance. The Cycle Folds Onto Itself When you break it down and look at triggering factors, it's not hard to understand how PTSD becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. 'Often with patients in a cardiac context, they get quite anxious. Their heart starts beating fast, and then they really worry. And so their response to that is, I'm going to withdraw. I'm going to disengage,' Jackson said. While physical activity or exercise often helps reduce stress, patients are often short of breath and are reminded how it felt when they were having the attack. James Jackson, MD 'And so if they start to exercise, it's all well and good,' Jackson said. 'But as soon as they get slightly short of breath, even if they're fine physiologically, as soon as they get short of breath, they're going to shut that down. And this is just one example, but it becomes a very isolating sort of process.' Patients left in this sustained crisis state experience a significantly diminished overall quality of life, and a study led by Antonia Seligowski and published in the March 2024 issue of Brain, Behavior, and Immunity found that PTSD after cardiac arrest significantly increases the risks for both major adverse cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality within just 1 year of discharge. This is supported by the findings of Donald Edmondson, MD, associate professor of behavioral medicine in medicine and psychiatry at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, New York City, both in his 2013 study published in the American Heart Journal and in research he has done since. 'Over the years now, we've studied cardiac patients, both acute coronary syndrome, so myocardial infarction, as well as cardiac arrest and stroke,' Edmondson said. 'What we see is that between 15 and 30% of patients will screen positive for PTSD due to that cardiac event 1 month later. Those who screen positive for PTSD are at least at doubled risk, if not greater, for having another cardiac event or dying within the year after that first cardiac event.' These outcomes highlight how critical it is to address PTSD early and effectively, Naidu said. 'As cardiologists, we often focus on optimizing medications, procedures, and physical rehabilitation, but without integrating behavioral support, we're missing a major part of the healing process,' he said. PTSD and cardiovascular disease have a well-documented relationship: PTSD can worsen cardiovascular risk, and in turn, living with heart disease can amplify psychological stress. Jackson said that there are behavioral health approaches at work in other areas that may be useful for cardiac events that are not sudden onset. 'There's a general sort of a movement afoot called prehab,' Jackson said. 'The general idea about prehab would be, 'Hey, you're going to have this surgery. We think that it's going to knock your brain down. So we're going to try to do some brain training with you before the surgery, and we think that in doing that, we're going to build your reserve up.' Is There a Type? Although a 2022 study led by Sophia Armand and published in the Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing showed that younger age, female sex, and high levels of acute stress at the time of the event to be significant risk factors for developing PTSD after cardiac arrest. There's no one overarching 'profile' in terms of who's likely to develop PTSD after any cardiac event. Naidu has his hunches, though. Donald Edmondson, MD 'I would say that I suspect cardiac arrest is more frequently associated with PTSD than other types of cardiac events. Compared to conditions like myocardial infarction or unstable angina, the psychological impact of cardiac arrest, particularly when complicated by anoxic brain injury, tends to be more profound,' Naidu said, cautioning that individual risk factors should be weighed in every case. 'Anoxic injury significantly increases the risk of depression, anxiety, and PTSD, often for an uncertain duration.' At Columbia, Edmondson said there are two indicators that together predict a high risk for a cardiac patient developing PTSD. 'They tend to pay close attention to their cardiac sensations and catastrophize them,' Edmondson said of the patients who go on to develop PTSD. 'Initially, in the ER [emergency room], they're extremely distressed. Then, post event, they'll say over the past 4 weeks, when I feel my heart beating fast, I worry that I'm having another heart attack. Or if I feel short of breath, I worry that I'm going to die.' 'Having those two predictors together, so initial high distress in the emergency department and this sort of high, what we call interoceptive bias, those two things together place people at high risk for developing PTSD at that 1-month period (after their cardiac event).' Regardless, more research must be done on this extremely risky and highly debilitating mental health issue that's so deeply entwined with its cardiac trigger. 'More focused studies are needed to better understand the timing, risk factors, and mechanisms behind these symptoms, and to develop standardized strategies for early screening, intervention, and long-term psychological support,' said Naidu. 'An urgent need exists to screen for and treat PTSD, not just for mental health but to help prevent repeat hospitalizations and improve long-term cardiovascular outcomes.'
