Five new dogs bring smiles to people with expansion of company's CareBark service

Yahoo29-04-2025

Homecare company Caremark Redcar and Cleveland has expanded its animal-assisted therapy service, CareBark, with the addition of five dogs.
This brings the total number of CareBark dogs to ten.
The new recruits, Shadow, Kyro, and Wren (all Labradors), Blue (Cockapoo), and Marley (Labradoodle), join the existing team of Labradors - Red, Chance, Emmie, and Axel, and Cockapoo Wilma.
The dogs and their seven human handlers visit customers' homes across the Redcar and Cleveland area, and are integrated into customers' assessed need care packages.
The dogs support customers with mental health and wellbeing, prevent loneliness, and provide motivation to get them moving and into the community.
The service also works with schools, colleges, day centres, care homes, and Caremark's Safe Place activity-led day centre, in Redcar.
Caremark Redcar and Cleveland managing director Michelle Jackson, who owns the dogs and established the service, said: "We only set up the service in 2023 and have been overwhelmed by the positive response to the dogs and to see the major impact they are having on people's lives across our area.
"We are achieving some amazing outcomes for people.
"The dogs have helped people leave their houses for the first time in years, brought joy to children with life-limiting conditions, and are helping people to meet new friends through their shared interests and love of a dog."
One organisation that benefits from regular contact with the dogs is Prior Pursglove College, in Guisborough.
Students with special educational needs in the Endeavour Faculty at the college participated in a fundraising event which helped to pay for sessions with the dogs.
One of the students, Hamza, said: "I am very scared of dogs so I kept my distance initially but once I got to know them, especially Kyro, I was fine and really enjoyed being with them."
Another student, Rob, said: "We were able to take the dogs outside and play with them, which was great."
Prior Pursglove tutor Helen Beadnall said: "When the dogs were here everyone was smiling and wanted to come over to them.
"It got the students very relaxed and focused and it brought them lots of joy.
"We have one young man who has difficulty regulating his emotions and can use inappropriate language, but when he was with the dogs, he didn't swear once and we saw the very best side of his personality, which was wonderful to witness."

The CareBark service is a chargeable service due to Caremark employing the dog handlers and not relying on volunteers.
The service can be contracted via Redcar and Cleveland Council as part of an assessed need, or paid for privately for anyone else wishing to use the service.
People in the community who are interested in the dogs coming to their home, care home, day centre, or any other venue can contact Caremark on 01287 634706 or email redcar@caremark.co.uk.

Watch: Trapped dog rescued from nearly 30-foot mine shaft

June 3 (UPI) -- Firefighters in Australia came to the rescue of a wayward dog who found his way into a 26-foot-deep mine shaft. The Country Fire Authority in Victoria said a Labrador named Ted wandered off his owner's property with a Labradoodle named Penny on Thursday and the dog duo made their way to Pronk Track in Trentham. Penny was found Monday standing vigil next to the mine shaft that now contained her adoptive brother. "When we arrived, as you would expect, Penny was quite agitated, but luckily one of our firefighters knew the owners because they lived next door to them," Trentham Fire Brigade Capt. David Wheeldon said in a news release. The fire brigade summoned the owners of the dogs as well as the Country Fire Authority's Oscar 1 rescue crew. "Throughout the morning, we were providing Ted with plenty of food and water," David said. Firefighters descended into the mine shaft and were able to bring Ted back up to the surface level for a reunion with Penny and his owners about 2:53 p.m., the CFA said. The Trentham Fire Brigade and personnel from Forest Fire Management Victoria located a number of nearby mine shafts and secured them to prevent future incidents.

CVS Sues Arkansas Over Law Banning PBM Ownership Of Pharmacies

(Photo by) CVS Health Thursday sued the state of Arkansas, trying to thwart a law the healthcare company said would lead to the closure of all 23 CVS drugstores in the state. At issue is legislation known as Act 624 that was signed into law last month by Republican Gov, Sarah Huckabee Sanders that pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) from owning and operating pharmacies. The law would be a first for a state in the U.S. and take aim at the rapidly growing business model of vertical integration that involves ownership of health insurers and medical care providers by the same company. CVS, the nation's largest retail pharmacy operator, also owns Caremark, one of the nation's largest managers of pharmacy benefits for employers, private insurers and government health insurance programs. CVS also owns Aetna, the nation's third largest health insurance company with more than 27 million health plan subscribers. 'We've filed a lawsuit to block Act 624, a harmful law that will shut down 23 CVS Pharmacy locations, eliminate hundreds of jobs, and drive-up costs for Arkansans,' CVS said in a statement Thursday evening. 'This unconstitutional law puts local politics ahead of patients, restricting their access to life-saving medications and undermining fair competition.' Gov. Huckabee's office couldn't be reached Thursday evening for comment. Huckabee, however, earlier this year called the law necessary to curb what she has called abuse business practices by PBMs. 'These massive corporations are attacking our state because we will be the first in the country to hold them accountable for their anticompetitive actions,' she said. But CVS Thursday said the legislation Huckabee signed into law will hurt patients and cut access to medical care, particularly in a rural state like Arkansas. 'Arkansas lawmakers crafted the law to exclude CVS Health's pharmacy operations while protecting in-state pharmacy businesses, which often charge higher prices," CVS said. 'There is no way around the fact that Act 624 will limit patients' options and increase the cost of their medicines.' CVS said the law, violates the U.S. Constitution's Dormant Commerce Clause, which 'prevents states from discriminating against or unfairly burdening out-of-state business.' 'Act 624 also is unlawful because it violates Equal Protection rights and is preempted by federal law,' CVS said. 'We have a right and responsibility to challenge this harmful policy to protect patient care and fair competition.'
