Ilona Maher wants America to fall in love with rugby during Women's World Cup
Heading into the United States' tournament opener on Friday, the world's most followed rugby player on social media wants to get more eyeballs on the sport as it ramps up attempts to crack the market in America.
'Not many people know that there's a Women's Rugby World Cup going on, so we try to get as many people as we can to spread that knowledge,' Maher said ahead of the match against host England in the World Cup curtain-raiser in Sunderland.
'We want the fans in America to see us play here because we've got a World Cup there in eight years and we need to start building for that.'
Rugby authorities see America as a vital new market for the sport. The United States will stage the men's Rugby World Cup in 2031 and the women's tournament in 2033.
The presence of Maher is key to attracting attention on rugby in the U.S., given she has 5.2 million followers on Instagram and 3.6 million on TikTok — platforms on which she promotes body positivity.
The 29-year-old Vermont native believes she and her teammates are 'changing the game on and off the field a lot.'
'This is a time where women's rugby is in a state where it could grow massively,' she said, 'and I do believe this team is at the forefront with how we present ourselves and people's perception of us.'
Maher certainly stands out, having been named as the best breakthrough athlete at the ESPYs last month. In an interview with the BBC ahead of the World Cup, she said she has been approached by the WWE — joking that her ring name would be 'Maher-vellous' if she ever became a wrestler — and that she'd love to get into acting.
First, though, she wants to deliver at the World Cup, starting with the match in front of 40,000 spectators against England, the tournament favorite, in the north of the country.
A star in rugby sevens, in which she won a bronze medal with the U.S. team at the Paris Olympics last year, Maher also had a three-month stint at English club Bristol in the 15 players-a-team format at the start of 2025.
'I think it's so cool,' Maher said, 'that we're up here, so far away from maybe where rugby union is big, and yet we're getting 40,000 people out to a game.'
The Americans also will play Australia and Samoa in Pool A at the World Cup.

Eze is close to joining Arsenal in a deal worth $90 million, but Glasner awkwardly joked that Guehi could be the next player to leave. "If Marc [Guehi] leaves, maybe I will try my boots because I was a centre-back," Glasner said. "We have to act. It's Crystal Palace's future and we need to add numbers." Glasner has made it clear that he wants to improve the squad, but the club has only made two signings this summer. Ajax defender Borna Sosa was acquired in a deal worth $2.6 million, and Palace also signed goalkeeper Walter Benitez on a free transfer from PSV. Palace has retained its star players until now, as Eze is expected to join Arsenal this week. Palace chairman Steve Parish suggested that Guehi could be the next marquee player to leave the club and called it a "difficult situation" due to spending rules. "If Marc Guehi wants to sign a new contract… then he can stay! It's a difficult situation," Parish told Channel 5. "Everyone has to sell players to comply with the rules. That's a situation that we will have to look at in the next days." Palace risks losing Guehi on a free transfer next summer, meaning the club could be forced to cash in on the defender. However, Glasner has been keen to build on last season's success and has shown signs of displeasure with the club hierarchy. It's been a frustrating summer for Palace off the field after a dream end to last season, which saw them beat Manchester City to win the FA Cup for the first time. In winning the competition, Palace should have qualified for the UEFA Europa League, but the club was penalized. As shareholders also owned the French club Lyon, which qualified for the Europa League, UEFA demoted Palace to the Conference League. Palace will still need a broad squad to facilitate domestic and European games, but has neglected business until later in the window. Glasner shared his frustrations with the lack of urgency. With Eze set to leave the club, Palace has 10 days to find a replacement. "We need to add, not numbers; it's easy to add 10 numbers," Glasner said. "We need the right players. It's not surprising for anyone that Ebs [Eze] left, honestly, it's not surprising. Because five days earlier, we couldn't have done anything if he leaves. "We knew that the chances were very high that this will happen and honestly, again, I say it like it is, we missed (the chance) to replace him early enough, that's completely our fault and nobody else's fault."

Five-star safety Bralan Womack commits to Auburn over Ohio State
Auburn football has landed its biggest pledge of the 2026 cycle in the nation's top safety, Bralan Womack. Womack, a five-star safety from Flowood, Mississippi, announced his commitment to Auburn on Thursday, choosing the Tigers over Ohio State, Florida, and Texas A&M. Womack began trending to Auburn during his official visit in June when he told Christian Clemente of Auburn Undercover that he felt "comfortable" at Auburn. Following his visit, the Director of Recruiting for Rivals, Chad Simmons, shared during an episode of the Simmons Scoop earlier this month that Auburn and Ohio State were "toe-to-toe", which led to a prediction that favored Auburn to land Womack by Steve Wiltfong, also of Rivals. The talented safety detailed his reasoning for choosing Auburn with Tom Loy of 247Sports following his decision. "Just a relationships. From a football standpoint, I believe in coach (DJ) Durkin and coach (Hugh) Freeze to take care of the football aspect," Womack said. "But you also want to enjoy your time in college. You don't want to be miserable in college. You can't just pick a school because they are good at football. I know Auburn wasn't the best last year, but like my mom says, 'God will never send you somewhere that's perfect, but He will send you somewhere that has a purpose.' I'm very confident in this decision." The addition of the nation's top safety has Auburn inching closer to a top-25 class. But first things first, Thompson vs. Carver Montgomery will feature Alabama's No. 1 Warriors, coming off an 11-3 season in which all three of their losses were one-point affairs in overtime. That included a 27-26 loss to their foes from Hoover, and the next two nights will give us our first look in 2025 at the two premier programs in Alabama. Carver Montgomery, meanwhile, was just 6-3 a year ago, with all three losses coming consecutively in an October stretch run after a 5-0 start. The community around the mill grew quickly, and Alabaster, which was a nearby community, was seen as "growth potential."
