However, the industry is facing a critical skills shortage, with many employers struggling to fill vacancies. One issue is that many people outside the sector are unaware that their existing skills and experience could transfer to tech roles. Club READY to agree €25m fee with Liverpool

Liverpool could strike a deal for €25m before the transfer window closes. It's not going to be easy to accept, however. Liverpool have already been about four times busier in this transfer window than they were in 2024. Back then, the Reds only added Federico Chiesa to their first-team squad. Even that came late in the window and was opportunistic. Liverpool's overall plan was to avoid overwhelming changes to the squad - but things are different in 2025. They had clear targets and went to get them, paying enormous figures if they had to. We've never seen the like, honestly. And that's with some major player sales, too, as Liverpool lost key figures from last season's title win. The craziest part of it all is that they're not done. Far from it, in fact. Liverpool wan to sign Alexander Isak, while Giovanni Leoni and Marc Guehi could both join. Even with all of that on the table, another potential deal has popped up. Let's see if Liverpool go for it. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas away range Real Madrid want Ibrahima Konate Sport in Spain claims Real Madrid are now eager to sign Ibrahima Konate. Though, that part isn't exactly news. It's been reported for a while that Konate is their ultimate target at the back. His contract expires in 2026 and they seem an opportunity for yet another free transfer. That's how they like to do their business, after all. Convince players to run their contracts down and join them without a fee. Only, Real Madrid do not like their current centre-back options. They're not working under Xabi Alonso and it has them open to the idea of buying Konate early. The report claims Real Madrid would put up around €25m in order to sign him in this window. It's a lot less clear if Liverpool would go for that. After all, it's not a lot of money for an elite target. However, it's almost certainly more money than Liverpool will get for Konate down the line. So we'll have to see what happens here. Liverpool might fancy cashing in on the Frenchman if possible but there's a strong argument that keeping Konate for a year is worth €25m.

Margaret Boden, Philosopher of Artificial Intelligence, Dies at 88

Margaret Boden, a British philosopher and cognitive scientist who used the language of computers to explore the nature of thought and creativity, leading her to prescient insights about the possibilities and limitations of artificial intelligence, died on July 18 in Brighton, England. She was 88. Her death, in a care home, was announced by the University of Sussex, where in the early 1970s she helped establish what is now known as the Center for Cognitive Science, bringing together psychologists, linguists, neuroscientists and philosophers to collaborate on studying the mind. Polymathic, erudite and a trailblazer in a field dominated by men, Professor Boden produced a number of books — most notably 'The Creative Mind: Myths and Mechanisms' (1990) and 'Mind as Machine: A History of Cognitive Science' (2006) — that helped shape the philosophical conversation about human and artificial intelligence for decades. 'What's unique about Maggie is that she's a philosopher who has informed, inspired and shaped science,' Blay Whitby, a philosopher and ethicist, said on the BBC radio show 'The Life Scientific' in 2014. 'It's important I emphasize that, because many modern scientists say that philosophers have got nothing to tell them, and they'd be advised to look at the work and life of Maggie Boden.' Professor Boden was not adept at using computers. 'I can't cope with the damn things,' she once said. 'I have a Mac on my desk, and if anything goes wrong, it's an absolute nightmare.' Nevertheless, she viewed computing as a way to help explain the mechanisms of human thought. To her, creativity wasn't divine or a result of eureka-like magic, but rather a process that could be modeled and even simulated by computers. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Red Bull moves into rugby by taking full ownership of English club Newcastle

NEWCASTLE, England (AP) — Red Bull's sporting portfolio now includes a top-flight English rugby union team after the energy drinks giant took full ownership of Newcastle Falcons on Tuesday. The club has been rebranded as Newcastle Red Bulls ahead of the new season starting next month, and said the move will embrace 'the innovative approach that Red Bull has brought to its sports initiatives across the world.' They include stakes in a number of soccer teams, including Leipzig, Salzburg and Leeds, as well as in Formula One. Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp recently became Red Bull's head of global soccer. Newcastle plays in the top domestic league, newly called the Gallagher Prem, and has won five major titles, including the league championship in 1998. One of its most notable former players is England great Jonny Wilkinson. Newcastle's last trophy was the domestic cup in 2004. 'Together, we aim to elevate rugby to new heights and deliver unforgettable moments for our fans,' said Oliver Mintzlaff, Red Bull's CEO in corporate projects and investments. "We're delighted to have acquired Newcastle Red Bulls and look forward to empowering the club to reach its full competitive potential.' ___ AP rugby: The Associated Press
