Karnataka government bans smokeless tobacco products to protect 'public health'
On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, the Karnataka government announced a sweeping ban on the use of smokeless tobacco products in public places, expanding its efforts to curb tobacco consumption and protect public health.
The move, led by Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, comes through an amendment to the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), news agency PTI reported.
The amendment, which also bans hookah use in public establishments like eateries, pubs, bars, and restaurants, was approved by both houses of the state legislature and received the President's assent before being notified by the state government on May 31.

The revised law makes it illegal to use not just cigarettes, but also products like chewing tobacco, gutka, khaini, and vapes in public spaces. The state has also raised the minimum legal age for purchasing tobacco products to 21 and increased the fine for smoking in public from ₹200 to ₹1,000. In a significant crackdown on hookah bars, the law now allows for fines ranging from ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh and up to three years of imprisonment for violations.
According to the Health Minister, the decision was driven by mounting evidence linking public tobacco use to increased risk of airborne infections such as Covid-19 and tuberculosis. During the pandemic, shared tobacco use and spitting in public posed severe health risks, prompting the state to adopt a stricter approach.
'These measures will play a crucial role in safeguarding public health,' Rao said in a post on X (formerly Twitter), adding that the state was committed to reducing the health burden caused by tobacco.
Public health experts and anti-tobacco campaigners have welcomed the move, calling it a bold and much-needed step in curbing tobacco-related harm in Karnataka.

108 Covid cases reported in 24 hrs, 461 active in Gujarat
Ahmedabad/Surat: In the 24 hours ending at 5 pm on Tuesday, the state reported 108 new Covid cases, taking the total number of active cases to 461, according to a bulletin issued by the state health department. The data indicated that out of the total active cases, 20 were hospitalised, while the remaining 441 were in home isolation. In the same period, 43 patients were discharged, and one patient succumbed to the infection, as per the bulletin. An analysis of the Covid case details from Ahmedabad city indicated that about 10-15% of the total cases are below five years of age. At least five patients were below one year in major hospitals, according to the data. "Moreover, the majority of the patients are recorded in the below 60 years or working population this wave. In comparison, the earlier waves had patients in senior citizen age categories," said a health department official. Two deaths recorded in the city were also reported in relatively younger ages — 18 and 47 years. Both were women and had comorbidities, added officials. Covid positive patients in home isolation have been advised to remain isolated for five days.

Kolkata: The overriding symptoms of Covid during the current surge were a low-grade, persistent fever, along with a mild cough, which could be deceptive, warned doctors. While it made a vast majority ignore the symptoms and take over-the-counter medicines, for some, the fever refused to subside. It was the continuing fever that led many to consult physicians. Most of those testing Covid positive on admission to hospitals for other ailments were also screened at hospitals due to their fever. Covid cases have been rising in Bengal over the past week. The state logged 319 cases in the past seven days, taking the number of active cases to 331 on Monday. Unlike the first three waves, when Covid came with loss of smell and taste, accompanied by high fever, severe cough and pneumonia, the symptoms of the current spike were muted and flu-like, said doctors. With a runny nose and a sore throat, symptoms in most were milder than that during the pandemic, said CMRI pulmonology director Raja Dhar. "Mild symptoms led many to ignore it, which could be risky at a time, when cases are proliferating. One should get tested, and if the result turns positive, the patient should isolate, especially if there are elders in the family. While the currently available mRNA vaccines are highly effective at inducing an immune response against Covid , they present challenges like the high amount of mRNA needed to produce them and the constantly evolving nature of the pathogen.
