Trump Envoy Is Expected to See Gaza Aid Efforts Firsthand

Steve Witkoff, President Trump's envoy for peace missions, was expected to visit aid distribution sites in the Gaza Strip on Friday as the hunger crisis there deepens.
Hundreds of Palestinians have been killed in the past two months in Gaza while trying to secure aid, which has led to growing international pressure on Israel to ease the catastrophic humanitarian suffering.
On Thursday, Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said that Mr. Witkoff and Mike Huckabee, the U.S. ambassador to Israel, would meet with Palestinians in Gaza and examine aid distribution sites.
Ms. Leavitt said that Mr. Witkoff and Mr. Huckabee would brief President Trump afterward 'to approve a final plan for food and aid distribution into the region.'
Mr. Witkoff, a close confidante of President Trump, was scheduled to visit at least one aid distribution site overseen by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, or G.H.F., a contentious Israeli-backed group operated by American security contractors. It has been distributing aid in Gaza since May.
The G.H.F. has aided Israel in overhauling the system for aid distribution in Gaza as a part of an effort that Israeli officials said was meant to prevent Hamas from benefiting from supplies entering the territory.
However, Israeli military officials have told The New York Times that the military has found no evidence that Hamas systematically stole aid from the United Nations, which has provided much of the aid to Gaza since the war there began almost two years ago.
Hundreds of Palestinians have been killed on their way to collect parcels of food from G.H.F. sites, according to the Gaza health ministry.
Witnesses have reported that, on a number of occasions, Israeli troops opened fire on the approaches to the new aid hubs. The Israeli military has said repeatedly that its troops have fired 'warning shots' when people approached its forces in a threatening manner.
On Thursday, Izzat al-Rishq, a senior Hamas official, said that Mr. Witkoff's visit to Gaza would be a 'propaganda show.'
'Witkoff will only see in Gaza what the occupation wants him to see,' he wrote on social media, adding, 'He will look at the ongoing tragedy with deceptive Israeli eyes.'
It was not immediately clear whether Israeli soldiers would accompany the American officials in Gaza.
Mr. Witkoff also visited Gaza in January, where he said he saw widespread destruction.

Iran Is Holding at Least 4 American Citizens, Rights Groups and Families Say

Iran has for decades practiced what critics call hostage diplomacy, a policy of detaining foreigners and dual nationals to leverage them for prisoner swaps and the release of frozen funds. In the aftermath of the 12-day war with Israel and the United States, Iran is once again targeting Americans. At least four Iranian Americans — two men and two women — are in Iranian custody, according to human rights groups, lawyers and Hostage Aid Worldwide, a nonprofit organization that was founded by former hostages to aid families and that is in touch with the current detainees' friends and families. Three of the Americans are in jail, and one has been barred from leaving the country, they said. The detentions are likely to increase the already tense political climate between Tehran and Washington after the United States joined Israel's attack on Iran and bombarded and severely damaged three of its nuclear sites in June. Nuclear negotiations with Washington have not resumed since the war in June, but Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, said this past week in an interview with local news media that he and the U.S. special envoy, Steve Witkoff, have been communicating directly through text messages. President Trump has said that he would not tolerate countries' wrongful detention of Americans and that their release is a top priority for his administration. Mr. Witkoff's office did not respond to a question on whether the detention of dual American citizens was brought up in communications with Mr. Araghchi. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Mike Huckabee, Israel's Passionate Defender as Gaza War Drives Allies Away

International condemnation of Israel for its nearly two-year-long war in Gaza is growing. Outrage over starvation in the enclave has led to calls from Israel's allies for a Palestinian state. The U.N. secretary general said the situation was 'a moral crisis that is challenging the global conscience.' And yet there are few more passionate defenders of the country right now than Mike Huckabee, the U.S. ambassador to Israel, a Baptist minister and the first evangelical Christian to serve in the role. Even after his boss, President Trump, broke with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel and acknowledged 'real starvation' in Gaza, Mr. Huckabee did not. 'There is hunger and there are some serious issues that need to be addressed,' Mr. Huckabee said this past week at his official residence in central Jerusalem. But, he said, 'it's not like Sudan or Rwanda or other places where there has been mass starvation.' The Gaza Health Ministry has said scores of people, including many children, have died of malnutrition. It is not clear how many also had other illnesses. Mr. Huckabee defended the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, an aid group led by his longtime friend Johnnie Moore, another evangelical Christian. The group, backed by Israel and run largely by U.S. contractors, has been widely criticized for shootings by Israeli troops near its food distribution sites. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Freed American-Israeli hostage details starvation and abuse by Hamas as families push Trump for deal

A former Hamas hostage who endured more than 480 days in captivity said he suffered from starvation, dehydration and abuse at the hands of his captors. Keith Siegel, an American-Israeli who was released in February during a fragile ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, told "Special Report" that he and other hostages suffered "all sorts of abuse." "I personally experienced severe violence, being kicked and being spat on and just being threatened with death, had weapons, guns pointed at me, and they were telling me they were going to kill me," he said. Fifty hostages remain in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive, according to numbers compiled by Fox News. Siegel, Anat Angrest and Lishay Lavi-Miran, the family members of hostages still held by Hamas, met with Secretary of State Marco Rubio last week in Washington, D.C., to push for a comprehensive deal to secure the release of all remaining hostages, as ceasefire talks stall. Siegel highlighted the dire conditions that hostages have lived in for nearly two years since the Oct. 7, 2023, terror attacks in southern Israel. "Sometimes there was food. Sometimes there was not food. But you never knew what to expect," he said. "I'm here to talk about the life-threatening situation that they are in, and I'm talking about the urgency to bring them all home. Every day that passes is a day where the hostage's situation is deteriorating." Angrest, whose son Matan was pulled from his tank on Oct. 7 while serving in the Israeli Defense Forces, told Fox News chief political anchor Bret Baier that her son was badly injured when he was taken. He spent two months with Siegel in Gaza, who said the Israeli soldier suffered from burns and injuries. "I must go on believing he's coming back and I dream about the day that he's coming to his warm bed. The same sheets wait for him," said the mother of four. "I'm here because I'm optimistic, because I believe President Trump [will] actually act to go on saving lives and bring all the 50 back home." Lavi-Miran, a mother of two, whose husband, Omri, was taken from their home at Kibbutz Nahal Oz, added that he's the oldest hostage still captive in Gaza. Her children were two and six months old at the time, and Lavi-Miran says they want to know their father. "We need the courage like Trump [had this past] six months and Keith with us is evidence that it can be," she said. White House special envoy Steve Witkoff wrote in a post on X in late July that the United States was pulling out of ceasefire talks with Hamas in Doha because the militant group wasn't negotiating seriously. "It is a shame that Hamas has acted in this selfish way," Witkoff said. "We are resolute in seeking an end to this conflict and a permanent peace in Gaza." Israel announced it would pause fighting in the enclave to allow more humanitarian aid to enter amid a global outcry over images of emaciated Palestinian children. The World Food Programme said nearly a quarter of Gaza's population is enduring famine-like conditions and the remaining population is facing emergency levels of hunger. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there is no starvation in Gaza and blamed Hamas for stealing aid. President Donald Trump acknowledged to reporters that there was "real starvation" in the Strip and vowed to step up humanitarian efforts. French President Emmanuel Macron said his country will recognize a Palestinian state in September at the U.N. General Assembly and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that his country would also recognize a Palestinian state unless Israel agrees to a ceasefire in Gaza.
