Govt reaffirms energy reform commitment
Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to a resilient and sustainable energy future during his keynote address at the Ministerial Plenary session titled 'Global Cooperation for a Resilient and Sustainable Energy Future' at the 30th Baku Energy Forum.
According to a statement released on Tuesday, in his speech, Malik congratulated Azerbaijan's Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov and pledged Pakistan's full cooperation with the forum's transition agenda, which aims to shift from a fossil fuel-driven framework to a balanced energy mix. He emphasised Pakistan's strategic realignment under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's leadership towards a more sustainable, inclusive, and coherent energy paradigm.
Highlighting Pakistan's ongoing industrialisation, Malik noted that the country's rising energy demand must be met by integrating renewable energy sources and technology. To support this, he announced the revival of the Cabinet Committee on Energy, chaired by the prime minister, to enhance coordination between the Petroleum and Power Divisions and ensure cohesive policy evolution. The minister also detailed Pakistan's efforts to expand its gas infrastructure by encouraging local exploration, acknowledging the assistance of Azerbaijan and other partner countries in developing indigenous gas resources. He said conservation measures and reform initiatives are underway to dismantle inefficiencies and ensure long-term sustainability of the gas sector.
"Despite economic challenges, Pakistan is committed to making the gas sector sustainable by dismantling inefficiencies and implementing reforms," Malik stated. "Reform is the cornerstone of the prime minister's vision for a resilient energy future."
Attendees at the plenary included Azerbaijan's Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov, the Turkish Deputy Minister of Energy, and Director of Energy at the European Commission Cristina Lobillo.
Separately in Islamabad, Malik held a bilateral meeting with Rovshan Najaf, President of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR), to enhance energy cooperation between the two countries. The discussion focused on deepening bilateral ties, potential joint ventures, and attracting investment in Pakistan's oil and gas sector.
Malik reiterated Pakistan's intent to strengthen partnerships with leading global energy firms and stressed the government's commitment to creating an investor-friendly climate. Najaf praised Pakistan's progress in the energy sector and reaffirmed SOCAR's interest in expanding cooperation with Pakistani stakeholders.

ANKARA: Turkiye's foreign minister and his Syrian counterpart on Wednesday warned Israel not to stir up chaos in Syria and demanded an end to all external interventions aimed at destabilising the war-torn country. 'Certain actors are bothered by the positive developments in Syria,' Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said after talks with Syria's Asaad al-Shaibani in Ankara, referring to Israel and Kurdish YPG fighters operational in northeastern Syria. 'Israel is currently one of the biggest actors in this dark picture,' he said of its ongoing military incursions since the overthrow of Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad late last year. 'The emergence of chaos in Syria… appears to have become a priority for Israel's own national security,' he said. Standing next to him, Shaibani also warned against efforts to foster chaos in Syria. 'The events in Latakia and Sweida and the failure to integrate the YPG (into the Syrian state) are evidence of the challenges and obstacles facing the positive process under way,' he said. Shaibani said foreign actors were exacerbating the unrest within Syria. 'We are also confronting multiple foreign interventions, both direct and indirect… (that) push the country toward sectarian and regional strife,' he said without giving details but warning against 'any reckless attempts to exploit events here'. During the war, Assad's government was backed by Russia, Iran and Hezbollah. Fidan said the YPG – part of the US-backed Kurdish-led SDF but seen by Ankara as an extension of PKK militant group – remained a concern over its refusal to integrate into the Syrian state despite a March agreement to do so. The PKK, which fought a decades-long insurgency against Ankara, is currently in the throes of disbanding as part of a peace agreement with the Turkish government. 'We have not seen any developments that indicate the organisation has eliminated the threat of armed action' nor sent home the foreign fighters in its ranks, he said. 'In an environment where Turkiye's security demands remain unmet, we have no chance of remaining calm,' he warned.

NA passes Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Bill 2024
The National Assembly on Wednesday passed the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Bill 2024 by a majority vote enacting it into law after rejecting opposition proposals amid protests in the House. The House suspended its routine agenda to take up the bill. Speaker Ayaz Sadiq ordered a headcount on the bill's passage, which showed 125 votes in favour and 45 against. Opposition members protested and shouted slogans during the process. PTI chairperson Barrister Gohar Ali Khan argued that the bill violated Article 10 of the Constitution and fundamental rights by allowing detention without trial for up to three months, extendable by another three. He said no law could be enacted in contravention of the Constitution or the Supreme Court's rulings, and noted past instances of prolonged detention without due process. Malik noted that countries such as China and the US possessed technology to verify the presence of oil and gas rapidly. Dr Shah also questioned whether Trump's remarks, including that Pakistan could one day export oil to India, were intended to pressure India into concessions, given that Pakistani ministers claimed they did not yet know the reserves' size. PPP lawmaker Syed Naveed Qamar asked if exploration opportunities would be open to countries beyond the US. Malik replied that rights would be available to multiple companies.

Pak-China conference to target $1.2b momentum
The 2nd Pakistan-China Business Conference will be held in Beijing on September 4, coinciding with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's visit for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin. Pakistan's Ambassador to China, Khalil Hashmi, said the conference aims to expand trade and investment ties. Organised by the Pakistan Embassy in Beijing with the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), Board of Investment, ministries, and provincial departments, preparations include answering Chinese investors' queries and showcasing opportunities. "We are finalising the list of companies and scheduling matchmaking sessions in advance for better outcomes," Hashmi said. Chinese firms will be briefed on incentives such as land acquisition, tax breaks, duty exemptions, wage structures, and energy supply. Pakistani delegates will get sector-specific guides on opportunities in China. Hashmi called China "the New Land of Opportunities" and urged Pakistan to boost production capacity and exports. Twenty-one priority sectors, including manufacturing, petrochemicals, minerals, pharmaceuticals, textiles, leather, and medical equipment, have been identified for deeper cooperation. The first conference in Shenzhen last year hosted 105 Pakistani and 250 Chinese companies, resulting in 30 MOUs, 17 now contracts worth over $100 million. Further matchmaking since then produced 45 MOUs worth $600 million, plus deals from expos in Karachi and Lahore, bringing total agreements in the past year to over $1.2 billion.
