Local high school students helping to beautify the city of Chicopee with annual clean sweep event
CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Students from a local school spent their Friday morning participating in a community clean sweep event in Chicopee. These students took to the streets to beautify the city of Chicopee by cleaning up litter and sweeping sidewalks.
Springfield Renaissance School students were not afraid to get their hands dirty as they worked to keep their community clean. Students used donated supplies to clean in areas around Chicopee City Hall, the Chicopee Canal Walk, the Chicopee Public Library, and RiverMills Center.
'To be like trying this out and actually cleaning out everything on the sidewalks, it's good, it feels cleaner,' said Student at Springfield Renaissance School, Kayla Hidalgo.
Another student at Springfield Renaissance School, Nylene Rodriguez, added, 'It feels good because like people can walk by and they don't have to see trash everywhere. They can just see like nature.'
This is part of the fifth annual Chicopee Clean Sweep put on by the Chicopee Cultural Council & Chicopee Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the City of Chicopee. Student volunteers are able to take part in this cause through the United Way Pioneer Valley program.
These students are spending their time picking up trash and bagging it up to not only help beautify the city, but also protect the environment. 'It's always important to teach them early. So never, ever, ever litter and be part of, you know, the people who are like not cooperating with Mother Nature,' said Community & Special Projects Liaison for the Chicopee Mayor's Office, Monica Torres.
And through their selfless actions, the Chicopee officials hope it'll inspire others to take care of their surroundings. 'It's important to have your city looking beautiful and inviting, you know, like you take a walk and it's just you feel comfortable in your own setting and be able to, like, navigate your city and say, I'm proud of where I'm from,' expressed Torres.
At the end of this event, the Chicopee Facility's department picked up the bags and delivered them to DPW.
There will be another clean sweep on Saturday with another group of volunteers. They'll be stopping at rivers, parks, and several neighborhoods throughout the city.

Springfield city officials announces more than $420K worth of grants is helping to support local summer programs
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – More than $420,000 worth of grants is helping to support local summer programs in Springfield. 16 local summer programs in the city are to benefit from this funding. The Jewish Community Center will be part of hosting some of the summer programs. Officials like Mayor Domenic Sano and the Springfield Public Schools superiendent gathered there today to make the announcment. This funding was made possible through a multi-grant the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education gave to Springfield Empowerement Zone Partnership. Officials explain the importance behind providing these programs to hundreds of youth. 'Programs like this affords students who otherwise students and families who otherwise would not have had the opportunity to take advantage of these programs. It gives them access and that for us is a a powerful and and really moving way to support a community,' said Co-Executive Director for Springfield Empowerment Zone Partnership, Matthew Brunell. Officials add the programs will also increase student engagement in the classroom and build core life skills. More than 5,000 middle and high school students across Springfield are to benefit from each of the programs. Retired 22News Anchor Rich Tettemer honored at Springfield Regional Chamber Spotlight
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Springfield Regional Chamber gathered Wednesday evening to celebrate a year of progress during its Chamber Spotlight and annual meeting. The night was an extra special occasion as they honored longtime 22News Anchor Rich Tettemer. Rich may have just retired, but the community is still showing appreciation for his years of dedicated service by always keeping western Massachusetts informed. Longtime 22News Anchor Rich Tettemer retires after 37 years It was a heartfelt moment Wednesday night as former 22News anchor Rich Tettemer was recognized for a lifetime of service to western Mass., spending decades earning the trust and hearts of viewers. Tettemer, who recently retired after nearly four decades on air, was named the Richard J. Moriarty Citizen of the Year at the Springfield Regional Chamber's Spotlight and annual meeting, both his family and 22News family proudly watching on. 'So many people have said how much they've respected me and liked watching me, it's unbelievable,' Tettemer said. 'I appreciate it so much.' The event served as a celebration of growth, connection, and the people behind the region's progress, from local leaders within journalism, to law, education, and business. For Rich, it was always about delivering the news to viewers with great integrity and lending out a helping hand outside of the station. 'Because it's about commitment to the community,' Tettemer said. 'The Children's Miracle Work Telethon, the NAMI Walkathon, the Super 60 Luncheon that I host with the Rotary Club. There's a lot of things I've had the chance to be a part of, and it's so cool to be recognized for that.' And after years of shining a light on others and the stories that shaped us, that light now shone on Rich, who is always 'working for you.' Chicopee Fire Department promotes two officers to new ranks
CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – It was an exciting day in Chicopee on Wednesday for two members of the Chicopee Fire Department, as a new captain and lieutenant were sworn in and pinned. Nicholas Brown was promoted to the rank of captain, and Gregory Pray to the rank of lieutenant. Both of their families, as well as members from the fire department, were there to watch and celebrate their achievements. Chicopee celebrates Portuguese heritage with flag-raising ceremony 'We're going to have two more excellent officers who have done a great job through this process, and they are going to represent us really well,' said Chicopee Fire Captain Katie Collins-Kalbaugh. 'I'm so proud of my dad for becoming captain, because he has been practicing for this the whole time, and he's been really working for this, and we finally got him to be captain,' Captain Brown's daughter Mia said. 'Just to say, I am very proud of him.' 'I am very happy, because it makes us have happy tears,' said Captain Brown's daughter Olivia. Both the new captain and lieutenant completed the rigorous process, including studying for months, taking the assessment test, and completing an interview.
