Chicopee Fire Department promotes two officers to new ranks
CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – It was an exciting day in Chicopee on Wednesday for two members of the Chicopee Fire Department, as a new captain and lieutenant were sworn in and pinned.
Nicholas Brown was promoted to the rank of captain, and Gregory Pray to the rank of lieutenant. Both of their families, as well as members from the fire department, were there to watch and celebrate their achievements.

'We're going to have two more excellent officers who have done a great job through this process, and they are going to represent us really well,' said Chicopee Fire Captain Katie Collins-Kalbaugh.
'I'm so proud of my dad for becoming captain, because he has been practicing for this the whole time, and he's been really working for this, and we finally got him to be captain,' Captain Brown's daughter Mia said. 'Just to say, I am very proud of him.'
'I am very happy, because it makes us have happy tears,' said Captain Brown's daughter Olivia.
Both the new captain and lieutenant completed the rigorous process, including studying for months, taking the assessment test, and completing an interview.

Springfield city officials announces more than $420K worth of grants is helping to support local summer programs
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – More than $420,000 worth of grants is helping to support local summer programs in Springfield. 16 local summer programs in the city are to benefit from this funding. The Jewish Community Center will be part of hosting some of the summer programs. Officials like Mayor Domenic Sano and the Springfield Public Schools superiendent gathered there today to make the announcment. This funding was made possible through a multi-grant the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education gave to Springfield Empowerement Zone Partnership. Officials explain the importance behind providing these programs to hundreds of youth. 'Programs like this affords students who otherwise students and families who otherwise would not have had the opportunity to take advantage of these programs. It gives them access and that for us is a a powerful and and really moving way to support a community,' said Co-Executive Director for Springfield Empowerment Zone Partnership, Matthew Brunell. Officials add the programs will also increase student engagement in the classroom and build core life skills. More than 5,000 middle and high school students across Springfield are to benefit from each of the programs. Air India Captain and First Officer Identified in Flight That Crashed with 242 People on Board

Officials said the plane was under the command of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and first officer Clive Kundar, according to News18 and The Hindustan Times. Bollywood star Vikrant Massey shared in his Instagram Stories confirming his cousin, Kunder, was the first officer on Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which went down moments after it took off on Thursday, June 12. 'My heart breaks for the families & loved ones of the ones who lost their lives in the unimaginably tragic air crash in Ahmedabad today,' Massey wrote. 'It pains me even more to know that my uncle, Clifford Kunder lost his son, Clive Kunder who was the 1st officer operating on that fateful flight,' he added. 'May God give strength to you and your family uncle and to all deeply affected.' Kundar had 1,100 hours of flight experience, while Sabharwal had 8,200, according to The Economic Times. Flight AI171 was 'traveling from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick' when it was 'involved in an accident after takeoff,' Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said in a statement shared on X. There were 230 passengers — including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals and one Canadian national — and 12 crew members on board at the time, he said. The AP reported the crash occurred in a residential area about 1:43 p.m. local time — just 5 minutes after taking off. Video shows the plane descending to the ground before being consumed in a large, fiery explosion. Photos from the scene show large destruction and the aftermath of a fire. One person, a 40-year-old British man named Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, survived the crash, according to local media reports. 'Thirty seconds after takeoff, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed,' he told the Times from his hospital bed. 'It all happened so quickly." No details have been released about what caused the crash or how many people have died. An investigation is underway. Wilson said in his statement that Air India is 'actively working with the authorities on all of the emergency response efforts.' Air India Shares Details on Sole Survivor of Plane Crash

The airline, whose London-bound flight AI171 carrying 242 people crashed in the Indian city of Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff on June 12, confirmed that only one passenger on board survived the accident. 'We regret to inform that, of the 242 aboard, there are 241 confirmed fatalities,' the company said in a statement shared to X (formerly Twitter) June 12. 'The sole survivor is being treated in a hospital.' Air India also confirmed that the survivor is a British national of Indian origin, while the deceased passengers comprised 169 Indian nationals, 52 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals and one Canadian national. The 12 crew members on board the Boeing 787-8 aircraft also perished. 'Air India offers its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased,' the statement continued. Following the plane crash, India's prime minister Narendra Modi shared his thoughts on the disaster. 'The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us,' he shared in a statement to X.
