Germany says Israel ‘increasingly in the minority' on Palestinian issue
Johann Wadephul said in a statement before heading to Israel that the recent UN conference on a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict – boycotted by the US and Israel – showed that 'Israel is finding itself increasingly in the minority'.
Germany is one of Israel's staunchest diplomatic allies but Wadephul noted that 'in view of the open threats of annexation by some in the Israeli government, a growing number of European countries are ready to recognise a state of Palestine without previous negotiations'.
Last week more than 70 Israeli lawmakers, including some in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing coalition, passed a motion urging the government to impose sovereignty over the occupied West Bank.
Trump's envoy arrives in Israel as Gaza criticism mounts
Wadephul repeated Berlin's position that 'the recognition of a Palestinian state should come at the end of the process' of negotiations.
He did however sharpen his tone slightly by insisting that 'this process must begin now' and that 'Germany will also be forced to react to unilateral moves'.
On Gaza, whose two-million-plus inhabitants now face an unfolding famine, Wadephul demanded that Israel enable more aid into the territory 'immediately, comprehensively and in a lasting way' to alleviate the 'dramatic' situation there.
He said that airlifts – which Germany will take part in in coming days – were one way of delivering aid but that they 'cannot replace' deliveries by land.
'Only overland can aid reach the population in the necessary quantities,' he said, adding that Germany was working to re-establish the land route 'urgently'.
Wadephul is expected to meet his Israeli counterpart Gideon Saar and President Isaac Herzog on the trip to Israel, as well as Netanyahu.
He will also travel to the West Bank to meet Palestinian Authority president Mahmud Abbas.

He criticized the Sindh government for failing to act, accusing it of focusing on revenue collection through vehicle number plates while ignoring its basic duties. He demanded the government issue number plates free of cost, noting that citizens had already paid for them. He said the administration had lost its writ in Karachi, pointing to poor services, broken infrastructure, and lack of clean water and electricity. He also questioned the Pakistan Peoples Party's claims about building 800,000 houses for flood victims, calling for transparency and urging clarity on the K4 water project's funding shortfall. Photo: AFP Listen to article President Donald Trump's Middle East envoy visited a US-backed aid operation in Gaza on Friday, which the United Nations has partly blamed for deadly conditions in the enclave, saying he sought to get food and other aid to people there. Steve Witkoff visited a site run by the US and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) in Rafah. Humanitarian organisations and many foreign governments have been strongly critical of the GHF, which began operations in late May. Hours after Witkoff's visit, Palestinian medics reported Israeli forces shot dead three Palestinians near one of the group's sites in the city on Gaza's southern edge. The Israeli military said it was still looking into the incident in which soldiers fired shots at as a "gathering of suspects" approaching its troops. The United Nations says more than 1,000 people have been killed trying to receive aid in Gaza since the GHF began operating, most of them shot by Israeli forces operating near GHF sites. The UN has declined to work with the GHF, which it says distributes aid in ways that are inherently dangerous. Crafting plan US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, who travelled with Witkoff to Gaza on Friday, posted on X a picture showing hungry Gazans behind razor wire with a GHF poster displaying a big American flag and the words "100,000,000 meals delivered". "President Trump understands the stakes in Gaza and that feeding civilians, not Hamas, must be the priority," GHF spokesperson Chapin Fay said.

US President Donald Trump speaks after signing the VA Home Loan Program Reform Act at the White House in Washington, DC, US, July 30, REUTERS US President Donald Trump on Friday said he had ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in regions near Russia in response to "threats" from former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev as Moscow remained firm on its Ukraine stance despite a looming sanctions deadline from Washington. Just days after Trump and Medvedev, who is deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, traded taunts Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow hoped for more peace talks with Ukraine but that the momentum of the war was in Russia's favour. Trump on Tuesday said Russia had "10 days" to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine or be hit, along with its oil buyers, with tariffs. In response, Medvedev accused Trump of engaging in a "game of ultimatums" and reminded him that Russia possessed Soviet-era nuclear strike capabilities of last resort." "I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that," Trump said. "Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances." Trump has said he will impose new sanctions on Moscow and countries that buy its energy exports – of which the biggest are China and India – unless "Russia moves by August 8 to end the 3-1/2 year war". However, Moscow has shown no sign that it will comply with Trump's deadline. Putin, without referring to the Trump deadline, said three sessions of peace talks with Ukraine had yielded some positive results, and Russia was expecting negotiations to continue. "As for any disappointments on the part of anyone, all disappointments arise from inflated expectations," he said. "In order to approach the issue peacefully, it is necessary to conduct detailed conversations. And not in public, but this must be done calmly, in the quiet of the negotiation process," he said, adding that Russian troops were attacking Ukraine along entire front line and the momentum was in their favour. Putin was speaking alongside his ally Alexander Lukashenko, the president of Belarus, at talks on an island in Lake Ladoga that is the site of a famous Russian monastery. Russian TV earlier showed the two leaders greeting monks at the Valaam Monastery, and holding candles during the chanting of prayers. "I will repeat once again, we need a long and lasting peace on good foundations that would satisfy both Russia and Ukraine, and ensure the security of both countries," Putin said, adding that this was also a question of European security. The Ukrainian government has said the Russian negotiators do not have the mandate to take significant decisions and President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has called on Putin to meet him for talks. "We understand who makes the decisions in Russia and who must end this war," Zelenskiy said on X on Friday.
