Sarah Michelle Gellar Breaks Silence On Buffy, The Vampire Slayer Reboot Reports
Rumours of a Buffy reboot have been circulating since as far back as 2018, but earlier this week, Deadline claimed that a revival was closer than ever.
In the US outlet's report, they claimed that a follow-up series was 'nearing a pilot order' from the streaming service Hulu, with Oscar winner Chloé Zhao on directing duties.
Billed by Deadline as 'the next chapter in the Buffyverse', Variety also claimed that while the would see Sarah Michelle reprising her role from the original series, this would be in a supporting capacity.
Instead, the show will reportedly focus on a new vampire slayer as its lead character, with Deadline suggesting that other cast members from the 90s hit series could also make appearances.
Sarah Michelle set the record straight on Instagram on Thursday evening, confirming: 'So… you might have heard some news this week, but I realise you haven't heard from me.
'Three years ago, I got a call from my dear friend and mentor, Gail Berman. She told me that she wanted me to sit down with Chloé Zhao to hear her take on a potential Buffy revival.
'I was blown away that Chloé even knew who I was, but, as I've always done, I told Gail that I just didn't see a way for the show to exist again. We'd always been aligned on that, but this time I heard something different in her voice.'
She continued: 'I eventually agreed to go (mainly just to meet Chloé) and our twenty minute coffee quickly turned into a four hour adventure. We laughed, we cried, but mostly we both talked about how much this show means to us.
'While I didn't agree to anything at that meeting, I did shock myself by agreeing to continue the conversation. These conversations did, in fact, continue over the next few years and eventually we added the incredible Nora and Lilla Zuckerman [writers on the mystery series Poker Face] to our little tribe until ultimately, one day, we landed on an idea.'

'I have always listened to the fans and heard your desire to revisit Buffy and her world, but it was not something I could do unless I was sure we would get it right,' Sarah Michelle explained.
'This has been a long process, and it's not over yet. I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there.
'I feel so lucky to be on this journey with these four unbelievably talented women, all of whom love Buffy as much as I do. And as much as you do. Thank you to all the fans who never stopped asking for this. This will be for you.'
Angel actor David Boreanaz then popped up in the comments, telling his former co-star: 'Excited for you and your journey. Enjoy the moments and continue to always give back to the fans. God Speed.'
While Sarah Michelle has long played down the idea of a Buffy revival, including as recently as 2023, she seemed more open when asked about the subject in December last year.
'It's funny, I always used to say no, because it's in its bubble and it's so perfect,' she said on The Drew Barrymore Show. 'But watching Sex And The City [reboot And Just Like That] and seeing Dexter, and realising there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, 'Well, maybe'.'
Buffy, The Vampire Slayer started life as a 1992 film, and was then adapted for the small screen in 1997, running for seven seasons in total.

During her time alone in Budapest, Dunst used to watch a British cooking show so she could relax. She returned to Los Angeles for a brief visit in April, but she was still afraid for her son and even compared her time in Budapest to 'Final Destination, where you're imagining all the things that could go wrong, worst-case scenarios happening to your child.' Dunst added, 'I have never seen that movie. But I know the concept. That's how it feels to be a mother at times.' According to Dunst, the experience brought her family together 'in such a deeper way.' She revealed that they will soon go to the Bahamas for vacation. The family picked the place based on James' requirements for a beach where his 'sandcastle won't wash away.' Notably, Dunst and Plemons worked together on the sophomore season of the FX series Fargo, which came out in 2015. 'The film explores the shift from carefree twenties to more serious thirties, capturing the chaos, pressure, humour, and melancholy of this transition,' runs the logline. 'When I was handed out the script, I immediately felt that it was hitting home, capturing a moment in life that I totally relate to, a transitional time from young adulthood to full adulthood, where you feel you have to make big decisions – settle, have kids or not, commit,' says the 31-year old helmer. 'I want to create moments that resonate deeply, moments that make the audience think, 'that's exactly how it feels!' As with her earlier works, Gregersen will enrich and enlighten her portrait of young adults' self-questioning with humor and warmth. Working closely with her usual cinematographer Torjus Thesen (attached to the Locarno entry 'Solomamma'), she says she will shoot with long takes, in the cinéma vérité style, and bring a fly-on-the-wall docu point of view to watch her characters from a distance. 'That way I can capture the authenticity, the humanity of the characters and even absurdity of some situations,' she says. Quintessential to the story is the music from the iconic Norwegian band deLillos, forerunners on the country's rock music scene in the '80s, which will be 'deeply woven into the film's fabric, with performances and songs from both actors and musicians serving as the omniscient voice of the characters' lives,' according to production notes. 'The band gave us their blessing and think it's fun that we, young women, want to take their music to our hearts. We'll make new versions of their songs, with some being interpreted by our lead actress and others being reinterpreted by young Norwegian musicians,' Gregersen says. Sæther Berger compares the group to the U.S. band Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers. 'Their songs are catchy, smart, a bit naïve and philosophical, carried by great music. They have a solid cross-generational appeal in Norway, and hopefully the film will boost their career, both at home and internationally.' The Oslo shoot will last 20 days from Aug. 27, with an extra four days in the feature, backed by the Norwegian Film Institute, Oslo Film Fond and Nordisk Film & TV Fond, will open in Norway via Ymer Media and Scanbox in the rest of the Nordics. Motlys is at Haugesund's New Nordic Films market this week with 'How to Steal a Bike,' the feature debut of 'Power Play' showrunner Johan Fasting, currently in early development. The company's hit and Golden Bear winner 'Dreams' by Dag Johan Haugerud just bagged two extra accolades in Haugesund: best editing at the national Amanda awards and a nomination at the prestigious Nordic Council Film Prize. Disney now offers a bundle combining Disney Plus, Hulu and ESPN Unlimited (all with ads) together on one plan — and it's currently available at a deep discount of over 39%. At the time of writing, this bundle is available for $29.99 a month, for the first 12 months (auto-renewing at the then-current price after the period ends). Hate ads? Try the Premium Bundle (which comes with ad-free Disney Plus and Hulu) for $38.99/month for your first 12 months, instead (this is the same level of discount compared to subscribing to each plan separately). If you're a sports fan interested in the new ESPN streaming service, and have ever wanted to watch the latest Marvel movies or "Star Wars" shows, or you're a big fan of Hulu's drama output, this new Disney Bundle seems like a no-brainer. Why? Well, when you consider that an ESPN Unlimited subscription on its own costs $29.99 a month, this deal effectively means you'll be getting ad-supported Hulu and Disney Plus plans for free for 12 months. If you're already subscribed to either streamer and were considering picking up ESPN Unlimited, I'd strongly suggest checking out this combo bundle instead. Please note: After the 12-month period is up, your Disney Plus, Hulu and ESPN Unlimited subscription plan will auto-renew at the current rate. Currently, the combined bundle costs $35.99 a month for the ad-supported plan, or $44.99/month for the premium offering. Not sure what the new ESPN streaming service offers? At launch, it comes with two plans: ESPN Unlimited and ESPN Select. ESPN Select is, effectively, a rebranded ESPN Plus. For $11.99 a month, ESPN Select offers subscribers ESPN Plus-branded content, and current ESPN Plus subscribers became ESPN Select members with the launch of the new app on August 21.
