Can genetics predict obesity? New study may help spot risk in kids before it is too late

Imagine knowing whether your child may be at risk for obesity—not years after weight gain begins, but long before it shows. A groundbreaking new study published in Nature Medicine suggests this could soon be possible, thanks to a genetic tool called
polygenic risk scores
(PGS).
Led by over 600 scientists from 500 institutions worldwide, and drawing data from The Genetic Investigation of ANthropometric Traits (GIANT) consortium and 23andMe, the study analyzed genetic information from more than 5 million individuals. Their goal? To develop a more precise way to predict a person's likelihood of developing obesity, starting from childhood.

What the Study Found
Current obesity risk tools largely rely on family history, diet, and lifestyle. But this study's new ancestry-specific and multi-ancestry polygenic risk scores proved about twice as effective in predicting obesity in adulthood compared to existing assessments.
In people of European ancestry, for example, the score accounted for 17.6% of an individual's risk of developing a high Body Mass Index (BMI)—a key indicator of obesity. The study included a broad participant base: 70% had European ancestry, 14.4% were Hispanic, 8.4% East Asian, 4.6% African, and 1.5% South Asian.
But while the tool is promising, it isn't a crystal ball. 'Obesity is not only about genetics,' said Dr. Ruth Loos, study co-author and professor at the University of Copenhagen's Novo Nordisk Foundation Center, in an interview with NBC News. 'Genetics alone can never accurately predict obesity… other factors, such as lifestyle, need to be part of the predictions.'

The Global Obesity Epidemic
The urgency behind such research is clear. Obesity is now considered one of the world's fastest-growing public health threats. According to
World Health Organization
(WHO) data:
In 2022, 2.5 billion adults were overweight, including over 890 million with obesity.
Childhood obesity is skyrocketing—35 million children under five were overweight in 2024, and over 390 million adolescents aged 5–19 were overweight in 2022.
Obesity was a factor in 3.7 million global deaths in 2021 alone.
Perhaps more troubling is the shift in obesity prevalence from wealthier nations to low- and middle-income countries, where children face a 'double burden' of both undernutrition and rising obesity rates. The WHO warns that these children often live in environments where high-calorie, nutrient-poor foods are cheap and accessible, but healthier choices and safe spaces for exercise are not.
Why Early Detection Matters
Obesity is much more than a number on a scale. It increases the risk of nearly 200 diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, asthma, and certain cancers. For children, the stakes are even higher: obesity not only impacts their physical and mental health but also academic performance and social wellbeing due to stigma and bullying.
Importantly, childhood obesity often carries into adulthood, setting the stage for chronic illness and shorter lifespans. 'Children with obesity are very likely to be adults with obesity,' notes the WHO.

What Can Be Done?
While genetic scores like the one developed in this study could revolutionize early detection, experts caution that there's no one-size-fits-all solution. Dr. Karen Hacker, director of the CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention, told USA TODAY that effective obesity prevention must address broader social determinants of health—including access to healthcare, nutritious food, physical activity, and education.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends multifaceted strategies: from medication and surgery for treatment, to policy-driven efforts ensuring access to healthy food, safe physical environments, and stigma-free support systems.

Conducted by researchers at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, the study found that early-onset gastrointestinal cancers increased by nearly 15% between 2010 and 2019. Colorectal cancer is now the leading cause of cancer death in men under 50 and second in women of the same age group. This surge isn't largely genetic. Instead, researchers point to environmental and lifestyle-related causes, which they refer to as a 'birth cohort effect.' Younger generations are more exposed to processed foods, sedentary routines, rising obesity, and chemical exposures, creating risk patterns not seen in prior decades. The impact also varies by community: Hispanic patients make up 22% of young stomach cancer cases, versus just 7% of older ones, while Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous groups face disproportionately high rates of early-onset colorectal cancer. Symptoms of rectal cancer As per the American Cancer Society, rectal cancer is often silent in its early stages, which can delay diagnosis. As the disease progresses, signs may include changes in bowel habits like diarrhea, constipation, or a frequent urge to pass stool. Patients may feel their bowels don't fully empty, or see bright red or dark maroon blood in their stool. Other warning signs are abdominal pain, narrow stool, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, and general weakness. Key risk factors for rectal cancer in young adults Excess body weight Obesity significantly increases the risk of developing and dying from colorectal cancer. The association is particularly strong in men. Maintaining a healthy weight can reduce this risk. Type 2 Diabetes People with type 2 diabetes face a higher likelihood of developing colorectal cancer, even after adjusting for obesity and inactivity. High insulin levels are believed to play a role. Unhealthy diet Long-term diets high in red or processed meats, like beef, hot dogs, or cold cuts, raise colorectal cancer risk. Low intake of vitamin D, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains also contributes. Smoking Tobacco use increases the likelihood of colorectal polyps and cancers. While often linked to lung disease, smoking is also a known risk factor for several gastrointestinal cancers. Alcohol consumption Even light-to-moderate alcohol intake can elevate colorectal cancer risk. Men are advised to limit alcohol to 2 drinks daily, and women to 1 drink. Age and birth cohort patterns Colorectal cancer is more common after 50, but rates are rising in younger people, likely due to lifestyle and environmental exposures not faced by earlier generations. Race and ethnicity As per the recent research, Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous populations are disproportionately affected by early-onset colorectal cancer. The disparities likely reflect systemic health inequities and environmental factors. History of polyps or prior colorectal cancer Those with a past diagnosis of adenomatous polyps. especially if large or numerous, are at increased risk. Individuals previously treated for colorectal cancer are also more likely to develop new tumors. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Conditions like ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease cause chronic inflammation, raising cancer risk. People with long-standing IBD may need earlier and more frequent screenings. Family history Having a first-degree relative (parent, sibling, or child) with colorectal cancer, particularly if diagnosed before 50, significantly raises one's own risk. Inherited syndromes Around 5% of colorectal cancer cases stem from inherited genetic mutations. Notable examples include Lynch syndrome and familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), which greatly increase lifetime risk.

We travel by road, water, or air. On roads, the odometer shows meters, and the speedometer displays kilometers per hour (km/h). But measuring distance in air or water isn't as straightforward. This is where nautical miles, a unit of length specially designed for navigation in air, sea, and space, comes in. 'The nautical mile is based on geography, history, and practicality. It equals 1.852 km (1.851853 km by international standard) and was defined in 1929 by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO). While both units relate to Earth's size, the meter (1/10,000,000 of the Earth's meridian) suits land measurements better and lacks a clear link to latitude and longitude. The nautical mile isn't part of the International System of Units (SI),' explained Dr Harshada Babrekar, Ph.D. Physics, consultant for Academic Development, Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Limited (MKCL). Prof. Jayant Pande, Faculty of Physics, FLAME University, said historically, sailors used nautical miles for centuries to navigate over large distances in the sea. 'Particularly when global navigation started to be carried out widely by European explorers in the 16th century, it was a matter of great convenience for them to know that the distance traveled by ship over a sea along a longitudinal meridian held a direct relationship to the degrees of latitude that had been crossed by the ship,' said Prof. Pande. Since the latitudes are equally spaced along the Earth's surface, such that there are 180 degrees of latitude in total from the North Pole to the South Pole, the calculation meant that one nautical mile equalled 1/(180*60)th of the distance along a meridian from the North to the South Pole. 'Again, this assumes the Earth to be a sphere, which is a close approximation to its actual shape of an oblate spheroid. This definition of a nautical mile, based on the distance between two degrees of latitude, makes it a handy unit for navigation, both for sailors and pilots, and helps them to pinpoint the latitude of a point easily and precisely,' said Prof. Pande. Take, for instance, Dr Harshada explained that if a plane is passing from Point A with Latitude 35° N, Longitude 118° W, and Point B: Latitude 38° N, Longitude 120° W (not taking into account longitude difference just for simplicity): Latitude Difference: 38° – 35° = 3° Convert to Minutes: 3° * 60 minutes/degree = 180 minutes Nautical Miles: 180 minutes * 1 nautical mile/minute = 180 nautical miles (approximately) Kilometers: 1 nautical mile = 1.852 kilometers = 180 * 1.852 = 333 km The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and International Maritime Organization (IMO) mandate the use of nautical miles as a global standard for ships and aircraft to reduce confusion. 'Each nautical mile equals one minute of latitude, allowing pilots to map routes precisely and navigate with ease. This standardisation helps maintain course using maps, ensures safer flights, and supports accurate GPS-based navigation,' said Dr Harshada. Prof. Pande said that a nautical mile is more suited to navigation over a body of water, whose surface can be constantly changing, than ground-based units such as kilometers and miles. 'With that said, due to reasons of standardisation, in modern times, an international nautical mile has been globally defined to have a length of exactly 1852 meters, which means that one can, if needed, convert from the nautical mile to an SI unit such as a kilometer,' said Prof. Pande. Using nautical miles also streamlines flight planning and promotes international coordination in aviation. 'If global adoption of the metric system grows like the gradual shift in the United States, kilometers may become common in everyday use. But in professional navigation and aviation, nautical miles will continue to dominate,' said Dr Harshada.
