Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli operations killed 40 people on Saturday in the Palestinian territory devastated by more than 21 months of war.
Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal said the dead included nine Palestinians killed in three separate air strikes in Gaza City, in the territory's north.
Thirteen were killed in five separate air strikes near the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, including eight in a strike on an encampment for displaced people in Al-Mawasi, Bassal said.
A drone strike killed two in central Gaza's Nuseirat refugee camp.
The agency said that 14 people were killed by Israeli gunfire while waiting for aid in six separate incidents in northern, central, and southern Gaza.
One of them was killed "after Israeli forces opened fire on people waiting for humanitarian aid" northwest of Gaza City, it added.
Witnesses said several thousand people had gathered in the area.
One of them, Abu Samir Hamoudeh, 42, said the Israeli military opened fire "while the people were waiting to approach the distribution point," located near an Israeli military post in the Zikim area, northwest of Sudaniyah.
The Israeli military said that its troops fired "warning shots to distance the crowd" after identifying an "immediate threat."
It added that it was not aware of any casualties as a result of the fire.
Another man was killed by a drone strike near Khan Younis, while one was killed by artillery fire in the Al-Bureij camp in central Gaza, the civil defence agency said.
The Israeli military said it was continuing its operations in Gaza, adding that it had killed members of a "terrorist cell" which it accused of planting an explosive device targeting soldiers.
It added that over the past day, the air force had "struck over 100 terror targets" across the Gaza Strip.
Bassal said civil defence teams also recovered the bodies of 12 people following Israeli bombardment north of Rafah the previous night.
The recovery operation was conducted in coordination with the UN humanitarian office (OCHA), he said, adding that the bodies were taken to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.
Israel launched its military campaign in Gaza after a deadly attack by Palestinian militant group Hamas on October 7, 2023.
The Israeli campaign has killed 59,733 Palestinians, mostly civilians, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory.
Hamas's October 2023 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, most of them civilians, according to a tally based on official figures. (AFP)

Thailand and Cambodia agree to ceasefire

Thailand and Cambodia agree to ceasefire Sealing the ceasefire deal in Putrajaya are, from left, Hun Manet of Cambodia, Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia and Phumtham Wechayachai of Thailand. Photo: Reuters The leaders of Thailand and Cambodia agreed to a ceasefire on Monday effective midnight, in a bid to bring an end to their deadliest conflict in more than a decade after five days of fierce fighting. Amid an international effort to quell the conflict, the Thai and Cambodian leaders held talks in Malaysia hosted by its Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the current chair of the Asean regional bloc, where both sides agreed to halt hostilities and resume direct communications. Anwar said when opening a press conference alongside the Thai and Cambodian leaders that there would be "an immediate and unconditional ceasefire with effect from midnight tonight. This is final." The Southeast Asian neighbours accuse each other of starting the fighting last week, before escalating it with heavy artillery bombardment and Thai air strikes along their 817km land border. Anwar had proposed ceasefire talks soon after a long-running border dispute erupted into conflict on Thursday, and China and the United States also offered to assist in negotiations. US President Donald Trump called both leaders at the weekend urging them to settle their differences, warning he would not conclude trade deals with them unless they ended the fighting. The tension between Thailand and Cambodia has intensified since the killing of a Cambodian soldier during a brief skirmish late in May. Both sides reinforced border troops amid a full-blown diplomatic crisis that brought Thailand's fragile coalition government to the brink of collapse. "Today we have a very good meeting and very good results... that hope to stop immediately the fighting that has caused many lives lost, injuries and also caused displacement of people," Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said, expressing appreciation to China for its efforts in participating in the process and to Trump. "We hope that the solutions that Prime Minister Anwar just announced will set a condition for moving forward for our bilateral discussion to return to normalcy of the relationship, and as a foundation for future de-escalation of forces." Acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, who had earlier expressed doubts about Cambodia's sincerity ahead of the negotiations in Malaysia, said Thailand had agreed to ceasefire that would "be carried out successfully in good faith by both sides". Gunman kills five in busy Bangkok food market

Gunman kills five in busy Bangkok food market People mourn those killed in the market shootings in Bangkok. Photo: Reuters A gunman shot and killed five people at a popular fresh food market in the Thai capital on Monday before turning the gun on himself, police said. The victims included security guards at the Or Tor Kor market in the district of Chatuchak district in Bangkok, according to the police. The Erawan Medical Center, which coordinates emergency medical services, reported two women were also wounded. The market, next to the sprawling Chatuchak weekend Market, carries all sorts of goods and is popular with Thai and foreign tourists. A video circulating online reportedly showed the shooter wearing a baseball cap and shorts walking in the market with a backpack strapped to his chest and a handgun in his right hand. Police said they were probing details about the suspect, including his motivation. Kitrat Phanphet, chief of the national police force, said he has ordered city police to carry out their investigation quickly and gather all evidence, including closed-circuit video footage. The last mass shooting incident in Bangkok was in October 2023 when a teenage boy, using a modified blank pistol, shot more than half a dozen people at the Paragon shopping mall in the city's main shopping district, killing three. One of the country's worst mass killings occurred in October 2022 in the northeastern province of Nong Bua Lamphua, when a police sergeant who had lost his job used guns and knives to kill 36 people, including two dozen toddlers at a day care centre. Shaolin abbot disrobed for 'extremely bad behaviour'

Shaolin abbot disrobed for 'extremely bad behaviour' Shi Yongxin is said to have 'seriously violated Buddhist precepts', including allegedly engaging in 'improper relationships' with women. File photo: Reuters The head of the Chinese temple known as the birthplace of kung fu will be disrobed for "extremely" bad behaviour, Beijing's top Buddhist authority said on Monday, after allegations of embezzlement saw him placed under investigation. The Shaolin Temple said on Sunday that Abbot Shi Yongxin, known as the "CEO monk" for establishing dozens of companies abroad, was suspected of "embezzling project funds and temple assets". It said Shi had "seriously violated Buddhist precepts", including by allegedly engaging in "improper relationships" with multiple women. "Multiple departments" are conducting a joint investigation, it said in a statement on WeChat. The Buddhist Association of China, overseen by the Communist Party, said on Monday it would cancel Shi's certificate of ordination. "Shi Yongxin's actions are of an extremely bad nature, seriously undermining the reputation of the Buddhist community, hurting the image of monks," the association said in an online statement. Shi had previously been accused by former monks of embezzling money from a temple-run company, maintaining a fleet of luxury cars and fathering children with multiple women. China's government exercises authority over the appointment of religious leaders, and "improper" conduct is often grounds for removal from office. A hashtag related to the temple scandal had been viewed more than 560 million times on social media platform Weibo as of Monday morning. The last post to the abbot's personal account on Weibo declared: "when one's own nature is pure, the pure land is here in the present". Shi faced similar allegations in 2015 which the temple called "vicious libel". Shi, 59, took office as abbot in 1999 and in the following decades expanded Shaolin studies and cultural knowledge overseas. He helped the temple establish dozens of companies – but received backlash for commercialising Buddhism. The temple, established in AD 495, is known as the birthplace of Zen Buddhism and Chinese kung fu. Shi was first elected vice-chairman of the Buddhist Association of China in 2002 and has served as a representative to the National People's Congress. (AFP)
