1 trade New York Mets must avoid making before 2025 deadline

The post 1 trade New York Mets must avoid making before 2025 deadline appeared first on ClutchPoints.
The New York Mets enter Wednesday's game against the Washington Nationals at 43-24. Carlos Mendoza's team has begun to distance themselves from the Philadelphia Phillies atop the National League East. After battling with the Phillies in dramatic series so far this season, the Mets have established themselves as the team to beat. Despite that, fans expect general manager David Stearns to be aggressive at the trade deadline. New York feels they are one big move away from a World Series title.

While it has been a strength of the team since the beginning of the season, New York has kicked the tires on a few starting pitchers around the league. With Frankie Montas inching closer to his Mets debut from the injured list, Mendoza's rotation goes four strong. Kodai Senga has led the way with a 1.59 ERA, putting him squarely in the conversation for the NL Cy Young Award. However, the playoff experience of the Mets' rotation is a point of concern, especially after their series against the Los Angeles Dodgers last season.
New York might be the team with the most motivation to make a big deal at the deadline. They might have to outbid other contenders for players around Major League Baseball, but Stearns is under pressure to do something. After giving Juan Soto such a big contract, the Mets want to ride the momentum they have built deep into the postseason.
However, there are a few players that New York should stay away from on the trade market. One of the starting pitchers that the Mets should avoid trading for is Shane McClanahan.
Why shouldn't the Mets trade for Shane McClanahan?
The last time Shane McClanahan was healthy, he went 11-2 in 2023 with a 3.29 ERA. The two-time All-Star was one of the best pitchers in the league in his first three seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays. However, Tommy John surgery in August of 2023 combined with nerve irritation in his left triceps are big red flags. McClanahan's recovery brings a lot of unknowns to whatever team he is on when he finally makes his return in late July or early August.

McClanahan's numbers are excellent, but he faces a big question when he comes back. Can he recapture his brilliance from before his injury? Or has he missed so much time that he will never be the same? The mystery around him also makes evaluating his value near impossible. The Rays could decide to try and sell high on a pitcher who was dominant the last time he was on the mound. The Mets and other teams around the league need to be cautious when deciding just how much they could give up for the 28-year-old.
If he were to join New York at the deadline, fans would wait in excitement for his return. A healthy McClanahan gives the Mets a stellar one-two punch at the top of their rotation alongside Senga. The Mets' offense is potent enough to keep them in any game. However, playoff series are often decided by which teams perform better on the mound. McClanahan gives Mendoza another capable starter who can come in and contribute in the postseason. If he can return to his former glory, he can carry the team to a big-time win.
Who should the Mets target at the trade deadline?
While a healthy McClanahan would be a great addition for the Mets. However, Stearns could decide that he doesn't want to trade for a pitcher. One of the other areas of concern on New York's roster is in center field. Jose Siri is on the Mets' injured list and Tyrone Taylor is filling in. There are outfielders around the league that teams expect will be available. Two of the names in that group are Cedanne Rafaela and Austin Hays.

Rafaela had one of the biggest hits of the season so far for the Boston Red Sox. However, the meteoric rise of Roman Anthony has him as a second string outfielder on Alex Cora's depth chart. The 24-year-old has played well in 2025, but a lack of opportunity could have the Red Sox looking to make the most of his good start and sell high. The Mets are one team that could benefit from his youth. They would benefit from his offensive pop without expecting too much out of him in their order.
Hays, on the other hand, is on the Reds' IL with a foot injury. The 29-year-old was a staple with the Baltimore Orioles and has a lot of experience for his age. One of the most alluring things about him is his price tag. The Reds and Terry Francona want to give more at-bats to Will Benson. However, Hays would stand in the way when he returns. Moving him to a team where he would play more could be a rare win-win trade at the deadline.
The Mets have an opportunity to challenge the Dodgers at the top of the NL this season. The trio of Soto, Francisco Lindor, and Pete Alonso lead a lethal offense. Senga and the rest of Mendoza's pitching staff have dominated. At the end of the day, though, New York is still more than 90 games away from the playoffs. How they make out at the trade deadline could go a long way in determining just how far Mendoza's team can go.
However, McClanahan is too big of a risk for a contender like New York to make, even if the Rays shop him around at a lower price.

Desmond Bane trade grades for Magic-Grizzlies blockbuster

The post Desmond Bane trade grades for Magic-Grizzlies blockbuster appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Memphis Grizzlies and the Orlando Magic shocked the NBA world on Sunday morning, pulling off the first blockbuster trade of the NBA offseason. Desmond Bane is headed to Orlando in exchange for four unprotected first-round picks, a pick swap, Cole Anthony and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Advertisement This move comes on the heels of disappointing first round playoff losses for both teams, and it addresses glaring needs for both teams. The Magic needed another perimeter shooter and scorer to go along with Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, and now they have that in Bane. On the other side, the Grizzlies needed to shake something up in an attempt to go backwards to get some more room to take a leap next year. The core of Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Bane seemed to have hit its ceiling, and now the Grizzlies have some breathing room to make a big roster pivot. How did each team make out in the deal? Here are grades for both teams for this Father's Day blockbuster. Magic get more star power, much-needed shooter A deal like this for Orlando feels like it needs to be discussed in two parts. Advertisement First, there is the addition of Bane, which looks like a home run. He is one of the elite perimeter shooters in the NBA and can work both on and off the ball. Bane can shoot off the catch and on the move and will give Orlando some immediate artillery on the perimeter. Bane can also handle the ball at times and initiate the offense, taking some burden off of Banchero and Wagner. With this extra ball handler, the Magic can use Banchero down low to attack mismatches, and they now have a true perimeter threat to deploy with him in the two-man game. Bane and Banchero are a great fit together on paper and it will be fascinating to see how they work together next season and beyond. Wagner's playmaking should also help set Bane up as an off-ball scorer, a role that he thrived in playing alongside Morant over the last few seasons. The Magic now have a lethal starting core of Banchero, Bane, Wagner and Jalen Suggs, which should immediately help them take a step forward next season. On the other side, the price of the trade has to bring the grade down a bit. The Magic gave up four unprotected first-round picks in this deal. Four!! Those include the No. 16 pick this year in a draft rich with potential role players. Crucially, it also included the Phoenix Suns' unprotected pick in 2026. Advertisement With the Suns coming off of a nightmare season and steamrolling toward a breakup with Kevin Durant, there is a chance that next season could go very poorly as well. That pick could end up being a valuable asset in the lottery in a 2026 NBA Draft that is expected to be full of talent. Giving up Cole Anthony and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope as a salary match isn't as big of a deal considering what Bane brings on the court, but what happens if this core tops out short of a title? The Magic now don't have many avenues to pivot. This trade is just as much a bet on Banchero becoming a true superstar as it is on Bane lifting the Magic in the present and the future. While that could very well pay off, it's worth questioning whether Bane is the level of player that warrants a gamble this expensive. Grade: B- Grizzlies ready to build around Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr. Dale Zanine-Imagn Images The Grizzlies clearly had to pivot after getting swept in the first round by the Oklahoma City Thunder this season. They already made a big move to fire head coach Taylor Jenkins near the end of the regular season, and now they have made their big move to shake up the team. Advertisement It doesn't come as much of a surprise that Bane was moved. Morant is a beloved athlete in Memphis and Jackson has flashed so much two-way upside over the last few years, which left the TCU product as the odd man out. Now, the Grizzlies have plenty of flexibility to build around their two big-money stars. They get an extra draft pick this season to help supplement Morant and Jackson, and the Suns pick in 2026 could end up being very valuable as discussed above. Caldwell-Pope is on a bad contract and has a player option at the end of next season, but he could be moved next offseason on an expiring deal. He underperformed last season, but there is a chance that he could rebound in a better offensive ecosystem in Memphis. Anthony is on a team-friendly contract and has a club option after next season, so the Grizzlies have some control there. This opens up a lot of room for the Grizzlies to make a big move down the line, or to use the draft assets that they just brought in to make another swing this offseason. Kevin Durant, anyone? PSG cruise over Atletico, Bayern thrash Auckland at Club World Cup

Jamal Musiala scored a second half hat-trick as Bayern Munich destroyed New Zealand minnows Auckland 10-0 in the Club World Cup on Sunday. (Paul ELLIS) Paris Saint-Germain laid down an ominous marker on their march towards global domination at the FIFA Club World Cup on Sunday as Bayern Munich showed no mercy to Auckland's amateurs with a ruthless 10-0 walloping. The first full day of action at the inaugural edition of the 32-team club tournament saw newly crowned European champions PSG produce a scintillating 4-0 rout of Atletico Madrid after Bayern's double-digit drubbing of Auckland City. Advertisement The New Zealand minnows are one of the Cinderella stories of the tournament, made up of amateur players who had to take unpaid leave to travel to the United States. But Bundesliga Goliaths Bayern were in no mood to indulge the Davids from the Oceania region, and duly ran riot in Cincinnati. Jamal Musiala scored a second-half hat-trick after coming off the bench while Kingsley Coman, Michael Olise and Thomas Mueller all netted twice. Sacha Boey scored the other goal in a Group C game that amounted to target practice for Bayern, who will face tougher tests ahead in the tournament against Boca Juniors and Benfica. Advertisement "We have to remain modest but it was important to be able to say that we took the game seriously," said Bayern coach Vincent Kompany. "It was a good first match at the tournament, but of course challenges are going to grow and it's going to become more difficult." Auckland's interim coach Ivan Vicelich admitted that his team had run into the "reality of football against one of the world's top teams." "It is a dream for players coming from an amateur level to play in this environment," Vicelich said. "We knew it was going to be a very difficult game, playing against one of the top teams in the world, potentially one of the favourites for the Club World Cup, so we are just really proud of the players' efforts." Advertisement - 'Hungry' PSG rout Atleti - While Bayern were left satisfied with a clinical opening, PSG delivered a statement win over Atleti in front of an 80,619 crowd at a sun-baked Pasadena Rose Bowl -- the venue for the 1994 World Cup final. The French champions shrugged off searing heat -- temperatures reached 31 degrees Celsius (87.8 Fahrenheit) shortly after the midday kick-off -- to produce the kind of adventurous, attacking display which became their calling card en route to their dazzling Champions League triumph earlier this month. Fabian Ruiz and Vitinha gave PSG a 2-0 lead by half-time before Senny Mayulu and Lee Kang-In sealed an impressive Group B win with late goals against an Atleti team who struggled to cope with the French side's multi-faceted attacking play. Advertisement PSG are bidding to crown a superb season which saw them win four trophies at home and in Europe with a fifth title. On Sunday's evidence, few would bet against Luis Enrique's side from being crowned world champions. "We had the objective of making history this season, but this is a new chapter," Luis Enrique said in his post-match news conference. "It's a nice challenge for the players and the team, to want to keep winning. "The club is hungry, the fans are hungry, the players and the team are hungry, and that's a good feeling. We have the same objective as in other competitions, which is to go as far as possible and try to win it." Advertisement Atletico manager Diego Simeone refused to cite the heat as a factor in his team's defeat. "I cannot blame it on the heat -- we both played in the same weather conditions," Simeone said. "They played much better than we did. They have amazing players and that's why they've just won everything." In other games on Sunday, Brazil's Palmeiras drew 0-0 with Portuguese giants Porto in Group A at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Another Brazilian side, Botafogo, face the Seattle Sounders in Group B later. rcw/sev

Could Shohei Ohtani return as a pitcher soon? Dodgers manager Dave Roberts teases comeback

Shohei Ohtani is now a year and a half into his Los Angeles Dodgers career without throwing a pitch from an MLB mound. That might finally change soon. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated an Ohtani return could be near while speaking with reporters ahead of Sunday's game against the San Francisco Giants. He announced Ohtani would be throwing to live hitters early next week, then was asked if that would be his final step before making a full return to the mound. Advertisement The first, and most important, word of Roberts' answer: "Potentially." His full response: "Potentially. He's getting very eager, getting very exited. I think that there's a point in hearing from Shohei that the effort that it takes to throw live and play a game, let's use those bullets in a game. So he's getting very excited." Ohtani was expected to be a hitter only in his first season with the Dodgers, but the team hoped he could resume the two-way responsibilities that made him a superstar by Opening Day of this year. That obviously hasn't happened, as a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder sustained in the 2024 World Series threw off his offseason rehab timetable. The Dodgers have been as hazy as possible when it comes to Ohtani's current timetable, though it's well-established he won't be going on a rehab assignment because his bat is too valuable. Roberts' comments on Sunday indicated the date might not be too far ahead in the future. Advertisement It's been a chaotic time in general for the Dodgers' rotation, which is currently without Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Roki Sasaki and many more. Glasnow and Snell could both be a month away, while Roberts said Sunday that Sasaki has been shut down from throwing, with no timetable for a return. When asked if Sasaki, currently on the IL with a right shoulder impingement, was no longer in the team's long-term plans for 2025, Roberts answered in the affirmative. The rotation is at least set to get a boost soon, as Emmet Sheehan, out since spring training of 2024 with Tommy John surgery, is currently finishing up a rehab assignment. Roberts said there is a "very high likelihood" of him getting activated to fill a rotation hole on either Tuesday or Wednesday.
