‘A lot of hard work, dedication and discipline go into success'
For 18-year-old Rajit Gupta, large banners and hoardings displaying photos and names of previous year's toppers of competitive exams acted as an inspiration, reminding constantly of his aim to find his own photo and name on one of those advertising spots.
A resident of Kota, considered India's coaching capital, Gupta bagged the top rank in JEE advanced, the qualifying paper for admission to premier IITs, results of which were announced on Monday. Gupta, an IIT Delhi zone candidate, scored 332 out of 360 marks in the entrance exam.
'My seniors and teachers played a huge role in inspiring me to do well in the exam,' Gupta told HT, adding that watching the faces and names of previous years' toppers also 'truly inspired' him.
Having scored a perfect 100 percentile (AIR16) in JEE mains, he was confident about JEE advanced. 'I'm very happy with my result,' said the 18-year-old, whose father Deepak Gupta is a sub-divisional engineer with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and mother Shruti Agrawal teaches home science at a Kota college.
'I have been preparing for this exam for the last three years,' Gupta said, adding he plans to pursue BTech in Computer Science from IIT-Bombay. 'My parents have really helped me throughout the process.'
Apart from school hours, he studied 5-6 hours every day, without stressing about the results. 'I play cricket and badminton whenever I get time from my studies,' he added.
On his immediate plans, Gupta said he is concentrating on the upcoming international Physics Olympiad. 'I'm going to France and will be representing India on July 18 in the Olympiad,' the JEE topper from Rajasthan said.
On the opposite spectrum geographically, Devdutta Majhi of Katwa in West Bengal's East Burdwan district focused solely on the tested combination of 'hard work, dedication, and discipline' to achieve success.
A candidate from IIT Kharagpur zone, Majhi topped among female candidates in JEE Advanced, scoring 312 (she was 16th on the common rank list or CRL).
'I studied for 10-12 hours every day and followed a daily routine. Sometimes my mother scolded me when I used to study too much. She cares for my health. Excellence doesn't come overnight. A lot of hard work, dedication and discipline go behind it,' Majhi said.
She had topped the Madhyamik examination (Class X board) in West Bengal in 2023 and earlier this year, Majhi hit the headlines along with Archisman Nandy, another student from the eastern state, for scoring perfect 100 in the JEE Mains.
'The only challenge I faced was the dearth of good teachers in the district. For that I had to depend on online classes with teachers from both Kolkata and Delhi,' she said, adding that she wants to pursue research after securing a seat at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.
An animal lover, Majhi is also known in her locality as the one who cares for the strays. 'I love to read story books, particularly detective stories. I also play violin,' she added.
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee congratulated Majhi for making the state proud.
'…Today's JEE Advanced 2025 examination results show that you have been topper among all girls in the entire country, and the highest rank holder in the IIT Kharagpur zone. You achieved top ranks in our Secondary and Higher Secondary examinations earlier, and now you are the topper girl of India! Wish you the very best, and congratulations to your parents and teachers too!' Banerjee said in a post on X.

India is extremely important because it's one of the biggest countries in terms of population and chess audience. Given the success of players, people love watching and following. And for us, those numbers are really big. We already have some sponsors from India. Every year, we have some important events in India. On getting sponsors even without Carlsen We are still able to raise very reasonable prize funds without Magnus. Magnus would maybe increase that but numbers were already better even after Magnus left. For instance, at the World Championships in Singapore, we had bigger prize funds than for the previous World Championships. Magnus is a factor but not a decisive factor in raising funds for chess events. On the Magnus incident where he punched the chess board against D Gukesh It's a bit unusual, yes. But if there are no complaints... I think normally an arbiter should do some kind of a soft warning for that. But I would not call what Magnus did disrespectful. It was emotional and he was really disappointed.

CM launches Rs 308-crore projects for Dhenkanal
1 2 Bhubaneswar: CM Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday launched development projects worth Rs 308 crore for Dhenkanal district. It included laying of foundation stone for the prestigious Baji Raut Sports Complex. The CM inaugurated 12 projects worth Rs 112 crore and laid foundation stones for 10 projects worth Rs 76 crore. He initiated four major industrial projects exceeding Rs 50,000 crore, including a Rs 30,000 crore solar energy project aimed at making Dhenkanal Odisha's solar energy hub. "These industrial projects will create around 26,400 direct and indirect employment opportunities, marking the success of our 'Utkarsh Odisha - Make in Odisha' conclave," said Majhi during the ceremony. A major highlight of the day was the foundation stone laying of the Rs 120-crore Baji Raut Sports Complex at Banamaliprasad. The complex will feature a football field, synthetic athletic track, hockey training center, indoor stadium, swimming pool, and a 100-bed sports hostel. Speaking about employment generation, the CM said his govt has already filled 27,000 vacant govt positions in the first year and plans to fill 40,000 more positions this year. He also highlighted the recent cabinet decision to increase the maximum age limit for govt job applications to 42 years. Industry minister Sampad Chandra Swain, who was present at the event, praised the CM's efforts in industrial development, while food supplies minister Krishna Chandra Patra emphasised the govt's commitment to fulfill its promises to the people. The event was attended by Dhenkanal MP Rudra Narayan Pany, local MLAs, and senior district officials.

IIT Delhi, AIIMS To Establish Centre Of Excellence For AI In Healthcare
Last Updated: The AI-CoE aims to develop AI-based solutions that support key national health programmes., IIT Delhi stated. IIT Delhi and AIIMS Delhi have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create a Centre of Excellence for AI in Healthcare (AI-CoE). The MoU was signed by Prof. M. Srinivas, Director of AIIMS Delhi, and Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, during a ceremony at IIT Delhi. The AI-CoE aims to develop AI-based solutions that support key national health programmes. Last year, the Ministry of Education awarded the two institutes a grant of Rs 330 crore under the 'Make AI in India, Make AI Work for India' initiative, following a rigorous and competitive selection process. The proposed Centre of Excellence will serve as the implementation vehicle for this grant. 'This MoU marks the beginning of far-reaching collaborative research that has the potential to change the face of healthcare in the country," Prof. M. Srinivas, Director, AIIMS Delhi said. Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi said, 'A partnership between AIIMS and IIT Delhi has the potential to transform Artificial Intelligence for affordable healthcare. We are delighted to be shaping this national center of excellence and hope that our output will impact the lives of Indians." Dr. Krithika Rangarajan, Chief Project Manager, who will lead the initiative from AIIMS Delhi, said, 'As we venture into this exciting new space, we look forward to guiding the marriage of healthcare with technology. We remain focused on keeping patients at the center of this effort and hope to build mechanisms that would benefit every citizen of the country."
