THOUSANDS on Universal Credit will receive a pay rise from today.
Some on the benefit have had to wait until now to get the new bumper rate which officially came into effect on April 7.

Universal Credit rates rose by 1.7% in April

From this date, Universal Credit rose by 1.7%, in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) level of inflation in September 2024.
However, people have had to wait to get the higher rate due to the way the benefit is assessed.
Universal Credit is, typically, paid monthly but is based on your circumstances in your last assessment period.
The new uplift does come into effect until after the first full one-month assessment period, which started on or after April 7.
If you're someone who had their assessment period start after April 7, you would have seen your benefits rise as early as May 13.
But if your assessment period was before this, you will have had to wait longer to get the pay rise.
And some people have had to wait until today to receive the new 1.7% higher rate.
This is when you should have received a pay rise based on your assessment period:
March 28 to April 27 - increase applied in June, you'll get it in your payment on June 1
March 29 to April 28 - increase applied in June, you'll get it in your payment on June 2
March 30 to April 29 - increase applied in June, you'll get it in your payment on June 5
March 31 to April 30 - increase applied in June, you'll get it in your payment on June 6
April 1 to April 31 - increase applied in June, you'll get it in your payment on June 7
April 2 to May 1 - increase applied in June, you'll get it in your payment on June 8
April 3 to May 2 - increase applied in June, you'll get it in your payment on June 9
April 4 to May 3 - increase applied in June, you'll get it in your payment on June 10
April 5 to May 4 - increase applied in June, you'll get it in your payment on June 11
April 6 to May 5 - increase applied in June, you'll get it in your payment on June 12 (today)

OTHER UNIVERSAL CREDIT NEWS
Councils across England have started dishing out help after receiving funding through the Household Support Fund (HSF).
And some are distributing support to those on benefits including Universal Credit.
Middlesbrough Council has started issuing payments worth up to £120 to those in need.
Meanwhile, households in Reading are in line to receive £125 vouchers in the coming weeks if they receive free school meals, which are paid to families on benefits including Universal Credit.
Each council in England decides who is eligible for a portion of funding individually.
However, in most cases you'll qualify for help if you're struggling to cover essential bills like energy and food.
Some local authorities are giving out help to those on benefits like Universal Credit, while others are assessing people's eligibility purely based on income and not factoring in benefits.

The vast space has been let to The Climbing Hangar, with the company planning to turn it into a state-of-the-art indoor climbing facility, complete with bouldering facilities, coaching, and a social space for events. In an announcement on their website, the company wrote: "Climbers in Briz have a lot to get excited about" as they expands into their 11th location. They added: "We're on a mission to inspire bolder living through indoor climbing and that means everyone gets in on the action whether they're a first-timer, or a life-longer." They've promised "hundreds of epic climbs" spread over 10 unique climbing grades, plus a 50 degree Kilter board and a 40 degree Tension Board. It gives climbers a range of options suitable for beginners to experts, with more than 300 climbs available in the 26,000 square foot climbing gym. In addition to all of the climbing equipment, the space will also feature a fully equipped strength training gym. Whether you're getting stuck in, or just want to sit back and relax, the space will also boast a cafe, and a calendar of events for the local community. The exciting new development is scheduled to open towards the end of summer. Commercial property consultancy firm Hartnell Taylor Cook arranged the deal on behalf of landlord AEW. Why are so many shops going bust? Richard Saunders, a partner at the firm, told Bristol Live: "We are delighted to have secured The Climbing Hangar for this significant city centre site." "This deal reflects the ongoing shift in large retail spaces towards experience-led occupiers and The Climbing Hangar will be a fantastic addition to Bristol, bringing fresh energy and activity to the area." The company first launched in 2011 in a Liverpool warehouse but has since expanded across the UK, including in Edinburgh, London and Southampton. This cash injection aims to expedite a range of locally-significant development projects, including Southport Pier. It clarifies how day-to-day expenditure will be used in the country, as well as capital spending on transport, schools, community assets and hospitals. In a speech at the Houses of Parliament, Chancellor Reeves said: "I know the pride that people feel in their communities. I see it everywhere I go, but I also know that for too many people, there is a sense that something has been lost." She cited the death of the high street as one of the problems facing British towns, alongside a decline in community spaces, jobs and opportunities. The Spending Review aims to solve some of these problems as Reeves added: "Job creation and community assets are vital to our growth mission, but too often, regeneration projects are held back, gathering dust in bureaucratic limbo. We are changing that." During the speech, she named Southport Pier as just one of the projects that could benefit. The government hopes that reopening the pier, which has been shut since 2022, could create jobs and new business opportunities in the local area. Sefton Council closed the historic pier - which is the second longest in the country - after a period of extreme weather that left structural engineers concerned. Trendy English seaside town has rooftop bar that 'feels like the Med' Southport locals were excited at the prospect of a revival of such a culturally significant site for the town. Local MP Patrick Hurley said: "We've got a commitment from the Chancellor at the dispatch box to support the project. What that support means, in concrete and practical terms, is that there's going to be funding made available to make sure that the pier can be reopened." Hurley announced that by the end of summer they would have a better understanding of the exact funding, as well as the concrete proposals and timescales that would enable the pier to reopen. Mayor of Liverpool City Region, Steve Rotheram, expressed his support for the project. During a meeting at Lancaster House, Mr Rotheram said that Prime Minister Keir Starmer had given his word that Southport would be included in the development plans. Mayor Rotheram said: "This hasn't happened by chance. It's the result of tireless work by people who've never stopped fighting for the town's future." He credited Councillor Marion Atkinson and MP Hurley as being integral to the project's success, as well as the enthusiasm of Southport locals. In addition to being Britain's second longest pier, Southport Pier also has an important history. First opened in 1860, it has hosted famous performers like Charlie Chaplin. A restoration project between 2000 and 2002 helped to revive the pier and boost the local tourism industry before it closed in 2022.
