Luke Littler's opponent at World Matchplay broke darts' golden rule before issuing apology

Luke Littler, who hammered Ryan Searle in round one, continues his challenge for a maiden World Matchplay crown against feisty Dutchman Jermaine Wattimena on Wednesday
Luke Littler's upcoming World Matchplay opponent once defied a golden darts rule before offering a heartfelt apology. World champion Littler continues his bid for a first Matchplay title against Jermaine Wattimena on Wednesday night.

The duo have clashed twice previously, with The Nuke emerging victorious on both occasions. Wattimena has periodically irritated rivals, with one opponent even declining to shake hands after one contentious episode.

During last year's Dutch Darts Championship, Wattimena faced Joe Cullen in a contest that went to a final-leg showdown. During the crucial leg, as Cullen prepared to throw, Wattimena attempted to rally the local supporters with hand movements in an apparent bid to secure an advantage.

PDC commentator Dan Dawson said: "He probably did break some etiquette rules there. You don't play to the crowd when your opponent is about to toe the oche."
Wattimena proceeded to claim the leg, with Cullen declining the traditional post-match handshake. After the episode, Wattimena acknowledged his error and issued a public statement of regret.
He told Algemeen Dagblad: "He didn't give a hand and then I made a move. Did I do it on purpose? No.
"It was in the heat of the moment. Sorry to Joe Cullen, it was not the intention. I understand he's upset, because you just can't do this, I know what I'm doing wrong. Hopefully, he understands. I'm not happy about it."
After world No.1 and defending champion Luke Humphries crashed out to Gian van Veen on the opening night, Littler cruised to a 10-2 triumph over Ryan Searle in the first round. The Nuke was dominant from the off at the Winter Gardens, posting an average of 108.92 and firing in five 180s.

Speaking after the match, Littler said: "I was well up for tonight. I really wanted that winning feeling. I'm so glad to get my first win here, and I cannot wait to come back on Wednesday.
"I've been practising so much recently. I've been putting the hours in, and I'm glad it's paid off tonight. I think all eyes are on me now, but I will just take it game by game."
Meanwhile, Wattimena secured his spot in the last 16 with a narrow 10-8 victory over former Matchplay champion Peter Wright.
On facing Littler, he said: "I've never played bad against him. If you want to win a tournament, you have to be beat the best player in the world."

Truth behind Liverpool's Alexander Isak transfer stance as Newcastle fear comes to light

Alexander Isak is to join his Newcastle team-mates next week after the Magpies rejected a £110m bid from Liverpool but his future appears far from certain at St James' Park Newcastle fear Liverpool are ready to play the same waiting game that once landed Virgil van Dijk in their bid to take £150million-rated striker Alexander Isak to Anfield. The Premier League champions have indicated they are prepared to park their interest in the Swedish international after seeing a £110million bid rejected by the Toon. ‌ Isak has set his sights on a move to Merseyside and has been using the training facilities at former club Real Sociedad while his team-mates are on a pre-season tour of Asia after missing the trip with a minor thigh injury. The 25-year-old risks alienating the St James' Park fans despite reassurances from manager Eddie Howe that he still has the full support of the club. ‌ If the relationship sours then that would crank up the pressure on the Tyneside club to allow Isak to get his wish by doing a deal with the Reds. Liverpool have been here before with Van Dijk. ‌ They backed off from making a move for the Dutchman when Southampton reported them to the Premier League over their conduct during negotiations in the summer of 2017. The complaint was dropped when Jurgen Klopp went public to declare their interest in the defender over - but five months later Van Dijk was snapped up for £75million. Former Saints chairman Ralph Krueger admitted that the saga had 'created an earthquake' at St Mary's. If Newcastle 's Saudi owners feel they are being manoeuvred into a tough position then it might backfire on both Liverpool and Isak. But boss Howe is keen to build on the optimism of ending Toon's 70-year wait for a domestic trophy last season and qualifying for the Champions League. He has been careful not to close the door on his best player returning to the fold. Howe, whose team face Tottenham in Seoul on Sunday, said: 'I am very much removed from everything that is happening back home. "I was made aware there was a bid yesterday. That bid was turned down before I heard about it. There are people back in England dealing with the situation. ‌ 'I really don't know what is going to happen next but, from our perspective, we still support Alex in every way and my wish is still that we see him in a Newcastle shirt again. 'I know where he is through the media, so I think from that perspective it's difficult for me to go into any detail. The situation is far from ideal. It is quite complex. I think that is all I have got to say." Newcastle are confident they have edged ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign RB Leipzig's Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko after tabling a bid worth £70million, including add-ons. If they are successful then that will encourage Liverpool to believe that they can land Isak in this transfer window despite investing almost £300million in strengthening Arne Slot 's title-winning squad. Incoming £60m Chelsea star thinks Benjamin Sesko is better than him and Man Utd ace

As Manchester United and Newcastle United continue to pursue Benjamin Sesko, some comments from one of his team-mates have bobbed to the surface Benjamin Sesko's RB Leipzig team-mate Xavi Simons has previously said the Manchester United and Newcastle United target is a better player than himself and Kobbie Mainoo. Sesko, 22, could soon be heading to the Premier League. ‌ Newcastle recently tabled a formal bid of around £70million for the powerful striker. He has been one of the most exciting young strikers in world football for the best part of a year and has previously been linked with Arsenal. ‌ One person who ranks him highly is Simons, who has been the ex-RB Salzburg's forward's team-mate for many years. The Dutchman, who is being tracked by Chelsea, has even said the striker is a better player than himself. ‌ Earlier this year, during a Q&A session, Simons was asked to rank other young players globally. After favouring Mainoo over Warren Zaire-Emery, he was then asked to compare the young United midfielder with Sesko - he immediately chose the young striker. Simons was then asked to pick between himself and the centre-forward. Without hesitating, he said Sesko again. The United and Newcastle target returned the compliment when he expressed his admiration for the Dutchman, following the midfielder's permanent switch to Leipzig in January. After Simons netted twice against Werder Bremen, Sesko said: "I love to play with him. He makes things fun. I'm really happy for his two goals because now he is going to have even more confidence." Interestingly, Simons also looks set for a Premier League move, but to one of United's biggest rivals. He was dropped from RB Leipzig's squad for a pre-season friendly against Atalanta as a result of the fierce transfer speculation. Simons recently removed any mention of the Bundesliga side from his Instagram bio, signalling his desire to leave the club. Sky Sports confirmed there is no injury concern for the former Barcelona wonderkid and that his absence is due to transfer speculation surrounding him. ‌ He has made his intentions clear to his club that he wishes to relocate to Stamford Bridge. Fabrizio Romano reports that discussions between Chelsea and Leipzig are at an "advanced" stage. The German outfit are believed to be seeking £60million to release him. Chelsea have already splashed considerable cash, having acquired Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, and numerous others. ‌ Meanwhile, Newcastle have submitted a formal bid for Sesko. The Magpies, who face the prospect of losing Alexander Isak this summer, have tabled £65.5m, with add-ons believed to be worth approximately £4.3m. The Magpies have already witnessed numerous prime targets reject their approaches this summer for alternative destinations. Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford recently spurned their interest so he could rejoin Manchester City. He joins the growing list of players, including Pedro, Delap, and Hugo Ekitike, who have turned down the club. Newcastle are hoping to beat United to Sesko's signature, which will see Eddie Howe land an impressive insurance policy should Alexander Isak end up departing. F1 stewards issue statement after Max Verstappen penalty decision over towel incident

Max Verstappen and Red Bull have been handed a warning for an incident that took place ahead of this weekend's Hungarian GP with The FIA having now released a statement Max Verstappen has avoided a penalty after the stewards were forced to look into an odd incident at the Hungarian GP. The reigning F1 world champion was called to the stewards in Budapest for allegedly being released in an unsafe condition during FP2. ‌ Verstappen was spotted throwing a Red Bull towel out of his car and onto the track while the session was still underway. It was similar to an incident that occurred earlier this year at the Miami GP where Lando Norris was found to have tools and an LED torch in his cockpit. ‌ McLaren and Norris were given a reprieve that day after Norris made his way to the pits to remove the items. Verstappen has faced similar consequences, with F1 stewards issuing just a warning to the Dutchman and his team. ‌ A statement read: 'The Stewards heard from the driver of Car 1 ( Max Verstappen), team representative and reviewed video and in-car video evidence. Shortly after Car 1 was released from its garage, the driver of Car 1 was observed to have thrown a towel out of the cockpit. 'The driver explained that while in the garage, the face towel had slipped from his lap to the side of the seat and the team was unaware that it remained in the cockpit. When the driver realised it was there, he moved to the far right of the track and attempted to throw it as far away from the car and the track as possible. 'The Stewards determine that the towel had the potential to have become lodged in the footwell and to interfere with the driver's ability to fully control the car and that therefore the car was released in an unsafe condition. ‌ 'The stewards consider this case to be distinguishable from a case where a hard (and therefore potentially dangerous) object is left in the cockpit and to be less severe than such a case. Hence a warning to the team is imposed. 'Competitors are reminded that they have the right to appeal certain decisions of the Stewards, in accordance with Article 15 of the FIA International Sporting Code and Chapter 4 of the FIA Judicial and Disciplinary Rules, within the applicable time limits. Decisions of the Stewards are taken independently of the FIA and are based solely on the relevant regulations, guidelines and evidence presented.' ‌ Who will win the Hungarian GP? Share your predictions in the comments below Before the statement, Verstappen himself had spoken out and assured that he attempted to remove the offending article as safely as possible. He said: "It's just a towel that you normally wipe your face with when you come back in, so it's still in the car when I went out. "So instead of it, of course, maybe potentially flying in between my feet, which is the dangerous part, I drove off line and I got rid of it in the safest way possible. So I think the stewards understand that." ‌ Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
