Luke Littler's opponent at World Matchplay broke darts' golden rule before issuing apology
Luke Littler's upcoming World Matchplay opponent once defied a golden darts rule before offering a heartfelt apology. World champion Littler continues his bid for a first Matchplay title against Jermaine Wattimena on Wednesday night.
The duo have clashed twice previously, with The Nuke emerging victorious on both occasions. Wattimena has periodically irritated rivals, with one opponent even declining to shake hands after one contentious episode.
During last year's Dutch Darts Championship, Wattimena faced Joe Cullen in a contest that went to a final-leg showdown. During the crucial leg, as Cullen prepared to throw, Wattimena attempted to rally the local supporters with hand movements in an apparent bid to secure an advantage.
PDC commentator Dan Dawson said: "He probably did break some etiquette rules there. You don't play to the crowd when your opponent is about to toe the oche."
Wattimena proceeded to claim the leg, with Cullen declining the traditional post-match handshake. After the episode, Wattimena acknowledged his error and issued a public statement of regret.
He told Algemeen Dagblad: "He didn't give a hand and then I made a move. Did I do it on purpose? No.
"It was in the heat of the moment. Sorry to Joe Cullen, it was not the intention. I understand he's upset, because you just can't do this, I know what I'm doing wrong. Hopefully, he understands. I'm not happy about it."
After world No.1 and defending champion Luke Humphries crashed out to Gian van Veen on the opening night, Littler cruised to a 10-2 triumph over Ryan Searle in the first round. The Nuke was dominant from the off at the Winter Gardens, posting an average of 108.92 and firing in five 180s.
Speaking after the match, Littler said: "I was well up for tonight. I really wanted that winning feeling. I'm so glad to get my first win here, and I cannot wait to come back on Wednesday.
"I've been practising so much recently. I've been putting the hours in, and I'm glad it's paid off tonight. I think all eyes are on me now, but I will just take it game by game."
Meanwhile, Wattimena secured his spot in the last 16 with a narrow 10-8 victory over former Matchplay champion Peter Wright.
On facing Littler, he said: "I've never played bad against him. If you want to win a tournament, you have to be beat the best player in the world."

If Newcastle 's Saudi owners feel they are being manoeuvred into a tough position then it might backfire on both Liverpool and Isak. But boss Howe is keen to build on the optimism of ending Toon's 70-year wait for a domestic trophy last season and qualifying for the Champions League. He has been careful not to close the door on his best player returning to the fold. Howe, whose team face Tottenham in Seoul on Sunday, said: 'I am very much removed from everything that is happening back home. "I was made aware there was a bid yesterday. That bid was turned down before I heard about it. There are people back in England dealing with the situation. 'I really don't know what is going to happen next but, from our perspective, we still support Alex in every way and my wish is still that we see him in a Newcastle shirt again. 'I know where he is through the media, so I think from that perspective it's difficult for me to go into any detail. The situation is far from ideal. It is quite complex. I think that is all I have got to say." As Manchester United and Newcastle United continue to pursue Benjamin Sesko, some comments from one of his team-mates have bobbed to the surface Benjamin Sesko's RB Leipzig team-mate Xavi Simons has previously said the Manchester United and Newcastle United target is a better player than himself and Kobbie Mainoo. Sesko, 22, could soon be heading to the Premier League. Newcastle recently tabled a formal bid of around £70million for the powerful striker. Sky Sports confirmed there is no injury concern for the former Barcelona wonderkid and that his absence is due to transfer speculation surrounding him. He has made his intentions clear to his club that he wishes to relocate to Stamford Bridge. Fabrizio Romano reports that discussions between Chelsea and Leipzig are at an "advanced" stage. F1 stewards issue statement after Max Verstappen penalty decision over towel incident
Max Verstappen and Red Bull have been handed a warning for an incident that took place ahead of this weekend's Hungarian GP with The FIA having now released a statement Max Verstappen has avoided a penalty after the stewards were forced to look into an odd incident at the Hungarian GP. The reigning F1 world champion was called to the stewards in Budapest for allegedly being released in an unsafe condition during FP2. Verstappen was spotted throwing a Red Bull towel out of his car and onto the track while the session was still underway. It was similar to an incident that occurred earlier this year at the Miami GP where Lando Norris was found to have tools and an LED torch in his cockpit. McLaren and Norris were given a reprieve that day after Norris made his way to the pits to remove the items. Verstappen has faced similar consequences, with F1 stewards issuing just a warning to the Dutchman and his team. A statement read: 'The Stewards heard from the driver of Car 1 ( Max Verstappen), team representative and reviewed video and in-car video evidence. Shortly after Car 1 was released from its garage, the driver of Car 1 was observed to have thrown a towel out of the cockpit. 'The driver explained that while in the garage, the face towel had slipped from his lap to the side of the seat and the team was unaware that it remained in the cockpit. When the driver realised it was there, he moved to the far right of the track and attempted to throw it as far away from the car and the track as possible. 'The Stewards determine that the towel had the potential to have become lodged in the footwell and to interfere with the driver's ability to fully control the car and that therefore the car was released in an unsafe condition. 'The stewards consider this case to be distinguishable from a case where a hard (and therefore potentially dangerous) object is left in the cockpit and to be less severe than such a case. Hence a warning to the team is imposed. 'Competitors are reminded that they have the right to appeal certain decisions of the Stewards, in accordance with Article 15 of the FIA International Sporting Code and Chapter 4 of the FIA Judicial and Disciplinary Rules, within the applicable time limits. Decisions of the Stewards are taken independently of the FIA and are based solely on the relevant regulations, guidelines and evidence presented.' Who will win the Hungarian GP? He said: "It's just a towel that you normally wipe your face with when you come back in, so it's still in the car when I went out. "So instead of it, of course, maybe potentially flying in between my feet, which is the dangerous part, I drove off line and I got rid of it in the safest way possible.
