
Trump's media company defends its ‘diversity and inclusion' policies as his administration dismantles DEI
Corporate governance documents of his media company, which owns the Truth Social platform, just last year pledged to foster a 'culture of diversity and inclusion' among a handful of guidelines adopted before the company went public.
Trump's business books have also championed diversity in hiring, including his 2000 book, 'The America We Deserve,' in which he wrote that one of the president's most important jobs was to 'induce a greater tolerance for diversity.'
Trump, who was considering a presidential run at the time, claimed in his book that through his friendship with Black celebrities such as rapper Sean 'Diddy' Combs and baseball player Sammy Sosa, he'd 'had the chance to learn firsthand about the diversity of American culture, and it has left me with little appetite for those who hate or preach intolerance.'
'Anyone who really knows me knows that I hate intolerance and bigotry,' Trump added.
As a presidential candidate in 2024, Trump frequently railed against DEI initiatives and his campaign pledged to immediately terminate them if he was elected.
'We will not tolerate so-called equity policies that punish Americans based on race or gender,' Trump said at a campaign stop in September 2024.
One of Trump's first acts in office was to sign an executive order eliminating DEI initiatives across the federal government. A federal judge this week temporarily blocked the administration from carrying out some of those directives.
Still, Trump's anti-DEI push reflects a broader pullback on some of these initiatives, which critics have argued promote preferential treatment based on race and gender. A number of well-known companies have also stepped back from their own DEI commitments, including Amazon, McDonalds and Walmart.
Supporters of DEI argue that dismantling these initiatives undermines efforts to promote equal opportunities in workplaces and organizations, particularly for underrepresented groups. And supporters have organized boycotts against several companies that rolled back diversity efforts since Trump took office.
In response to CNN's reporting, a Trump Media & Technology Group spokesperson dismissed the significance of the diversity and inclusion statement in the company's corporate governance, implying that it was merely legal language to comply with anti-discrimination laws.
'CNN's focus on legal language that is obviously intended to ban discrimination and ensure compliance with all applicable regulations is a textbook example of CNN preferring frivolous, partisan 'gotcha' stories to meaningful news that affects people's lives,' the spokesperson said.
The White House also weighed in, attacking DEI policies more broadly.
'The Left's divisive focus on DEI policies undermines decades of progress toward true equality. The Trump administration rejects this backward thinking and will pursue an agenda that lifts everyone up with the chance to achieve the American Dream,' said Harrison Fields, a White House spokesman.
But legal experts CNN spoke with said that Trump Media's claim that the diversity statement is just boilerplate legal language doesn't hold up.
CNN legal analyst Elie Honig said that while companies must comply with anti-discrimination laws, they are not required to make public statements affirming diversity commitments.
'There is no law requiring an affirmative public statement,' Honig said.
New York University constitutional law professor Kenji Yoshino noted that the statement explicitly describes diversity as a factor in hiring and board nominations – something that goes beyond non-discrimination.
'The defense that this statement is only about a ban on discrimination and compliance with the law strains credulity,' Yoshino said. 'The 'commitment to diversity and inclusion' section states that this commitment 'is and will be a factor in identifying and nominating director candidates at both the Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee and Board levels.' This sounds less like non-discrimination and more like traditional affirmative action.'
Trump Media included the commitment to diversity and inclusion as part of its corporate governance guidelines adopted by its board before going public in March 2024. The 5-page document includes a number of bullet points including guidelines on stock ownership and ethics and standards conduct for board directors.
'The Board is committed to creating and maintaining a culture of diversity and inclusion,' it reads. 'The Company will be better able to grow and improve with a diverse Board, management, and team of employees. Such commitment is and will be a factor in identifying and nominating director candidates at both the Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee and Board levels.'
'Additionally, the Board believes in and supports equal opportunity in employment to all persons and strongly encourages management to embrace the unique contributions an employee or candidate can bring to the Company and its culture in terms of their education, opinions, culture, ethnicity, race, sex, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, nationality, color, religion, veteran's status, disability and other life experiences,' it continues.
Trump's business writings have also emphasized the importance of diversity.
In his 2006 book 'Trump 101: The Way to Success,' he wrote that businesses like the Trump Organization benefit from a mix of personalities and backgrounds.
'Such diversity can bring new, stimulating, and creative ideas to the business. In New York City, you have no choice; diversity comes with the terrain. You may end up working with people who are completely different than you, or who you don't understand. They may have different values, traits, and goals, but you have to get along,' he wrote.
'The best part is that you can usually learn from these people, if you just give them a chance, and the differences can enrich your life,' he added. 'When you work with others, look beyond the obvious and how they present themselves. People are not one-dimensional. Every individual has unique talents that may or may not be in the job description or listed on a resume.'
Later, Trump writes to be grateful for being exposed to different backgrounds and beliefs.
'Never presume that your way is the only way, whether you're talking about work, ethics, or politics. Be tolerant of diverse opinions, practices, and views. Be grateful for the diversity in our lives and for the benefits of being exposed to so many different backgrounds and beliefs. Take the time to try to understand other viewpoints – how and why those people feel and act as they do. Gather information, get the whole story, and don't jump to conclusions or judge.'
And while the host of the reality competition show 'The Apprentice,' Trump frequently praised the diverse group of competitors.
In the season six premiere, Trump remarked, 'These 18 candidates are about to embark on the world's toughest job interview. They're the best and the brightest. Lawyers, business owners, internet executives, even an Olympic athlete. The candidates are a diverse and talented group, but they all have the same goal to win a yearlong apprenticeship in the Trump Organization. It's the dream job of a lifetime.'

Trump is right about border and criminals, but he's losing voters with mass deportations
President Donald Trump delivered on his key campaign promise: Securing the border. Yet the only thing falling faster than illegal crossings has been his approval rating on immigration. The problem: Instead of building on his win at the border with more popular arrests of criminal threats inside the country, the administration is going after migrants indiscriminately. Democrats can't deny it: The border crisis is over. Border Patrol arrests have fallen nearly 90% since December to near-record lows. Nonetheless, only 40% of voters approved of the president's handling of immigration in a July Quinnipiac poll, while 55% disapproved. The 15-point approval deficit contrasts with a +1 rating in the January Q-poll. Other polls show similarly dramatic declines. Of course, people don't actually want more illegal immigration. Polls consistently show that the president is the most trusted on the border. Instead, it's the deportations from within the United States driving the discontent. Quinnipiac's July poll found that only 38% approve of how the administration is handling deportations. That doesn't mean voters back the other side — 84% of disagree with Democrats who want to suspend deportations completely, according to a March Pew Research Center poll. But Trump emphasized that he would prioritize ending 'sanctuary and protection for dangerous criminals' — the position of 81% of voters. Unfortunately, most voters don't believe the president is doing that right now. Even as late as June, voters told CBS News they thought that the president was prioritizing 'dangerous criminals' over peaceful immigrants 53%-47%. By mid-July, it was 44%-56% the other way — an 18-point swing in a month. What happened? Voters started to see how the priorities shifted. According to The Post's reporting, agents were instructed in late May to focus on 'quantity over quality' to meet a 3,000-per-day 'goal' set by the White House. ICE was advised to target people looking for work at Home Depot and to raid businesses in industries likely to employ illegal workers. Rather than scooping up violent criminals recklessly sent back to the streets by New York City or even cleaning out the homeless shelters costing New York taxpayers a fortune, ICE is arresting immigrants who are helping power the Trump economy. Since the White House ordered the change, there has been a dramatic escalation in arrests of people without criminal records. In June, the number of immigrants arrested without criminal convictions was 1,100% higher than it was even in 2017 during the first Trump term: nearly 6,000 per week. Yet there are still half a million illegal immigrants with criminal convictions out there to remove — and ICE should locate them before spending its time and resources on workers. It's common sense: ICE agents told The Post that the policy was 'leading them to leave some dangerous criminal illegal migrants on the streets.' Setting aside politics and crime, Trump has already publicly acknowledged there's an economic downside to these non-criminal deportations. 'Our aggressive policy on immigration is taking very good, long-time workers away from them, with those jobs being almost impossible to replace,' he said in June, referencing farms, hotels, and leisure businesses. The president is correct. Besides the border, the president's other primary election issue was inflation. And immigrants reduce inflation — not, as critics claim, by depressing wages for American workers, but by increasing production of goods and services. When supply decreases, prices go up for consumers, as we painfully saw throughout the pandemic. Immigrant workers also benefit their American counterparts: Companies invest more when there is enough labor to quickly construct and fully man facilities, and Americans end up in better jobs as managers and supervisors when immigrant workers fill lesser-skilled jobs. Booting the nearly 2 million illegal-immigrant construction workers will pull Americans out of those better-paying jobs, not into the labor force. Whatever the immigration politics are, Trump's midterm success will ultimately depend most on his economic outcomes. Americans re-elected him because they remember his first term before the pandemic as a period of stable wage and job growth — but random mass deportations are both politically unpopular and economically destabilizing. Although the president has promised 'changes are coming' on deportations, none have yet occurred. In April, Trump floated the idea that employers might be able to sponsor their illegal workers for visas if the workers leave the country and return legally. That's a great starting point: If no employer is willing to vouch for them, deportation likely won't have much economic downside. The president has diagnosed the problem. He's come up with a viable solution. And the One Big Beautiful Bill shows he's capable of navigating controversial legislation across the finish line. Trump administration halts visas for people from Gaza after Laura Loomer questions arrivals
WASHINGTON (AP) — A day after conservative activist Laura Loomer posted videos on social media of children from Gaza arriving in the U.S. for medical treatment and questioning how they got visas, the State Department said it was halting all visitor visas for people from Gaza pending a review. The State Department said Saturday the visas would be stopped while it looks into how 'a small number of temporary medical-humanitarian visas' were issued in recent days. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday told 'Face the Nation' on CBS that the action came after 'outreach from multiple congressional offices asking questions about it." Rubio said there were 'just a small number' of the visas issued to children in need of medical aid but that they were accompanied by adults. The congressional offices reached out with evidence that 'some of the organizations bragging about and involved in acquiring these visas have strong links to terrorist groups like Hamas,' he asserted, without providing evidence or naming those organizations. As a result, he said, 'we are going to pause this program and reevaluate how those visas are being vetted and what relationship, if any, has there been by these organizations to the process of acquiring those visas.' Loomer on Friday posted videos on X of children from Gaza arriving earlier this month in San Francisco and Houston for medical treatment with the aid of an organization called HEAL Palestine. 'Despite the US saying we are not accepting Palestinian 'refugees' into the United States under the Trump administration,' these people from Gaza were able to travel to the U.S., she said. She called it a 'national security threat' and asked who signed off on the visas, calling for the person to be fired. She tagged Rubio, President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, GOP Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat. Trump has downplayed Loomer's influence on his administration, but several officials swiftly left or were removed shortly after she publicly criticized them. The State Department on Sunday declined to comment on how many of the visas had been granted and whether the decision to halt visas to people from Gaza had anything to do with Loomer's posts. HEAL Palestine said in a statement Sunday that it was 'distressed' by the State Department decision to stop halt visitor visas from Gaza. The group said it is 'an American humanitarian nonprofit organization delivering urgent aid and medical care to children in Palestine." A post on the organization's Facebook page Thursday shows a photo of a boy from Gaza leaving Egypt and headed to St. Louis for treatment and said he is 'our 15th evacuated child arriving in the U.S. in the last two weeks.' The organization brings 'severely injured children" to the U.S. on temporary visas for treatment they can't get at home, the statement said. Following treatment, the children and any family members who accompanied them return to the Middle East, the statement said. 'This is a medical treatment program, not a refugee resettlement program,' it said. The World Health Organization has repeatedly called for more medical evacuations from Gaza, where Israel's over 22-month war against Hamas has heavily destroyed or damaged much of the territory's health system. 'More than 14,800 patients still need lifesaving medical care that is not available in Gaza,' WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Wednesday on social media, and called on more countries to offer support. A WHO description of the medical evacuation process from Gaza published last year explained that the WHO submits lists of patients to Israeli authorities for security clearance. It noted that before the war in Gaza began, 50 to 100 patients were leaving Gaza daily for medical treatment, and it called for a higher rate of approvals from Israeli authorities. The U.N. and partners say medicines and even basic health care supplies are low in Gaza after Israel cut off all aid to the territory of over 2 million people for more than 10 weeks earlier this year.

Apple's smartphone market share plummets as Samsung surges — here's why
The rising demand for the best foldable phones is great for Samsung and not so great for Apple. Now, a new report shows Samsung is eating into Apple's market lead in the U.S. after the iPhone maker saw a rare double-digit dip last quarter. In the second quarter of 2025, Apple's market share in the U.S. fell from 56% to 49%, while Samsung's share surged from 23% to 31%, according to data from Canalys. That means Samsung managed to close the market share gap between it and Apple from 33% a year ago to 18% last quarter. Much of Samsung's second-quarter improvement hinged on its more affordable Galaxy A series, like the Galaxy A36. That just goes to show that the race for the best cheap phones is heating up alongside rising prices. Samsung's premium offerings, particularly the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 that debuted last month, have also gained plenty of traction on social media for their surprising durability and value. Canalys credits Samsung's record Q2 growth to its strategy of "smart volume," a focus on offering a wider range of products at different price levels compared to Apple's line-up. Samsung's Galaxy and Z phone lineups start at $650 (for the Galaxy S24 FE) and go up to $2,400 (for the 1TB storage option Galaxy Z Fold 7). "That is a massive span of devices,' Canalys analyst Runar Bjorhovde told NBC News. 'There is an idea that you can target people at every single price point, and you can meet them at every spot.' Though the overall U.S. smartphone market barely grew during the same period, up to 27.1 million units compared to last year's 26.7 million, Samsung enjoyed the strongest performance of any phonemaker. The company shipped 8.3 million units in Q2 2025, a 38% increase year over year. Apple, on the other hand, saw shipments fall by 11% to 13.3 million units, down from 14.9 million a year ago. Apple still holds the crown for most smartphone sales in the U.S., but for the first time in over a decade, its position is beginning to look shaky on its home turf. The last time we saw Samsung seriously challenge Apple's top spot was back in 2014, when the Korean smartphone manufacturer embraced big-screen phones and phablets while Apple was still dragging its feet. Consumer preference isn't the only thing fueling the market share shift, though. As Canalys notes, "Samsung's performance in Q2 was boosted by frontloading of inventory into the U.S. amid tariff concerns," one of several strategies smartphone makers used to minimize the impact of Trump's tariffs. If Apple wants to regain its standing in the U.S. market, it'll have to pull out all the stops at its iPhone 17 event this September. This year promises a big shake-up for the iPhone lineup, with the Plus model expected to be replaced by the super-thin iPhone 17 Air. The iPhone 17 Air is a direct competitor to the Galaxy S25 Edge, Samsung's thinnest phone yet, but it may not be enough to change Apple's fortunes. Counterpoint Research, a research firm that estimates smartphone sales, found Samsung only saw a "slight year-over-year boost" in sales after the S25 Edge was released in May.
