First Meeting Of PKR Political Bureau Focuses On Cost Of Living, Prep For Sabah State Election
KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 (Bernama) -- The first meeting of the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Political Bureau for the 2025/2028 session held today focused on the implementation of policies introduced by the executive and their impact on the people's cost of living.
The PKR Political Bureau said in a statement that the meeting, chaired by PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, also scrutinised follow-up steps to ensure that the people's welfare always remained as the party's main priority.
'Discussions also touched on the Sabah State Election, which will be held soon. The party's current focus is to ensure readiness in facing the polls.

'The deputy president and all vice-presidents have been given specific tasks to ensure the victory of the party and its partners in the MADANI Unity Government,' the statement said today.
In addition, to ensure the continuity of election preparations, former chairman of the Sabah State Leadership Council (MPN) Mustapha Sakmud will continue his duties in the role while awaiting the appointment of the new MPN leadership.
'Datuk Peto Galim will also continue his responsibilities as director of the Sabah State Election Committee,' according to the bureau.

The statement also said that the meeting decided that in the interim, Fuziah Salleh and William Leong will continue their duties as secretary-general and treasurer-general, respectively, until the new leadership is appointed in the upcoming Central Leadership Council meeting.
Last Saturday, Anwar expressed confidence that the new leadership would be able to elevate the party to greater heights.

AGC denies Anwar's pardon was invalid, rebuts Mahathir's claims as misleading
KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 — The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) yesterday denied that the pardon granted to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was invalid. In a statement, the AGC said this was because Anwar had been granted a full pardon by the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya, which convened on May 16, 2018. 'The AGC affirms that the 51st Meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya was held on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, at 11am at Istana Negara, Kuala Lumpur. 'The meeting was chaired by His Majesty the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Muhammad V, and was also attended, among others, by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad himself, who was the Prime Minister at the time,' the AGC stated. According to the statement, based on the advice of the Pardons Board, Sultan Muhammad V consented to the granting of a full pardon to Anwar, along with his immediate release, effective from the date of the Pardons Board meeting. The statement added that for the purpose of the meeting, the Attorney General had also provided a written opinion on the matter in accordance with Clause (9), Article 42 of the Federal Constitution for the Pardons Board's consideration. Therefore, the AGC refuted the remarks made by Dr Mahathir, in which the former Prime Minister publicly claimed that the pardon was invalid as it did not go through a proper Pardons Board proceeding. In this connection, the AGC views the matter seriously as it involves constitutional and institutional interests. Cops beefing up security for Asean council meet
KUANTAN: Police will step up security ahead of next week's 2025 Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly Advisory Council On Dangerous Drugs meeting. Pahang police chief Comm Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said they are actively carrying out early preparations in terms of security so that the programme, which is scheduled to be held in Kuantan and Pekan, would proceed smoothly. 'We will ensure there are no hindrances when they hold the meeting as well as make sure everything is safe. 'If there is a need for road closures, they will be kept to a minimum and carried out in stages to ensure smooth traffic flow,' Comm Yahaya told reporters after attending an award ceremony at the Pahang police headquarters here yesterday, Bernama reported. He added that security preparations would be further improved after today's meeting with state Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin.

New MMC developments to be announced at Hawana
KUALA LUMPUR: The latest on the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) will be announced during the summit of the coming National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil ( pic ). The Communications Minister said the MMC was set up with the clear mission of defending media freedom, ensuring fair and responsible reporting, and serving as a channel for the people to air grievances against the media in a civil manner. He said the other notable achievement was when the Dewan Rakyat passed the Malaysian Media Council Bill 2024 in February. 'After more than 50 years of discussion, our country has finally succeeded in establishing the Malaysian Media Council, a self-regulatory body that brings together all types of media, including print, broadcast and digital,' he said at the Hawana 2025-Bernama Strategic Partners' Appreciation Ceremony and Official Launch of Bernama-Motorhome at Wisma Bernama here yesterday. Fahmi said with the setting up of the MMC and other initiatives, the government was laying a strong foundation for the future of the Malaysian media. Themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics', Hawana 2025 will be held at WTC KL from June 13 to 15 with the highlight of the celebration to be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on June 14. More than 1,000 media practitioners, representatives of local journalist associations and media representatives from Asean member countries have been invited to bring together the professional media fraternity and industry experts while exchanging ideas and forging strategic relationships. Fahmi said the Bernama (Amendment) Act 2024 was gazetted on May 14 covering entities disseminating news via newspapers, publications, radio, TV and other mass communication platforms, including electronic and digital media. 'This amendment also aims to ensure Bernama's structure and functions are in line with developments in information and communications technology, as well as meeting the needs of the increasingly complex media industry,' he said. Meanwhile, May 29 has been gazetted as National Journalists' Day in conjunction with the publication of the first edition of Utusan Melayu newspaper that day back in 1939.
