Zverev has winning start in Halle after first aid effort

David Inderlied/dpa Alexander Zverev breezed into the second round of the Halle Open on Wednesday, 6-2, 6-1 over American Marcos Giron, and also found time to help an injured spectator. Second seed Zverev brought a bag of ice to a woman to ccol her neck where she was hit by a part of an advertising board that had fallen from an upper tier. Advertisement The 62-year-old woman was tended to by paramedics and taken to hospital for observation, but she appeared largely unhurt. "This has never happened in the 32-year history of the tournament. We deeply regret the incident," tournament director Ralf Weber said, promising the women a free ticket for the whole tournament next year as a small compensation. The match which was in the first set soon resumed, and Zverev won in 1 hour 19 minutes, with the help of 10 aces and 22 winners. He did not face a break point while breaking 43rd-ranked Giron four times. "I hope the lady is OK. Something like that should of course not happen," Zverev said post-match. Advertisement "Of course I am happy with the way I played. But the most important thing is that everyone here goes home healthy and happy." Zverev is making another attempt at winning a first career grass court title. He was a Halle runner-up twice and last week lost another final on the surface, against American Taylor Fritz in Stuttgart. Zverev, who next meets Italian Lorenzo Sonego, is the second seed in Halle, behind world number one and defending champion Jannik Sinner of Italy, who won his first match on Tuesday. Other action Wednesday saw two Russians advance. Third-seed Daniil Medvedev reached the quarter-finals 6-2, 7-5 over French player Quentin Halys, and eighth-seed Karen Kachanov beat Belgian Zizou Bergs, 7-5, 6-3 in the first round. Zverev turns first-aider as he helps an injured fan

Alexander Zverev's hunt for an elusive grasscourt title has begun with a clinical 6-2 6-1 victory over Marcos Giron in a Halle Open first round match during which he also helped an injured spectator. Wednesday's match was interrupted by an advertising hoarding falling on spectators during the opening set. A section of the hoarding came crashing down from the upper tier onto spectators below, forcing the chair umpire to stop play before Zverev immediately procured an ice pack for an elderly woman who'd been injured. Organisers said the 62-year-old did not suffer any major injuries and was able to leave the stadium after the initial shock, but she was taken to hospital as a precaution. They added that drumming against the boards may have caused the screws to come loose. "There has never been anything like this in our 32-year tournament history. We deeply regret the incident," tournament director Ralf Weber said in a statement. On court, Zverev finished the match with 23 winners in the 79-minute contest where Giron struggled to match the power of the German's first serve and had no answer when his opponent's returns found all corners of the court. World No.3 Zverev, still nursing the disappointment of Sunday's Stuttgart Open final defeat by Taylor Fritz, showed no mercy with the home fans firmly behind the towering second seed who has finished runner-up twice in Halle. "I hope the lady is okay. Something like that should of course not happen," Zverev said. "Of course, I am happy with the way I played. But the most important thing is that everyone here goes home healthy and happy. "It was a great match for me, I thought it was quite high level. Maybe he wanted to play a bit better than he did, but all in all I felt like I didn't let him play that well, which was important for me." Earlier, eighth seed Karen Khachanov dispatched Belgium's Zizou Bergs 7-5 6-3 despite a nasty fall on the grass.

Liverpool has upgraded by selling Trent Alexander-Arnold in 'sad' situation

Former Liverpool right-back Markus Babbel has revealed he thinks Jeremie Frimpong could prove to be an upgrade on Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Reds confirmed the signing of Frimpong on the same day Alexander-Arnold's exit to Real was officially announced, ending the latter's 20-year association with his boyhood club. While Frimpong is not necessarily seen as a like-for-like replacement, with Conor Bradley also an important figure for Arne Slot, his signing was definitely born out of the need to add additional options in that position. Advertisement Alexander-Arnold's technique, passing and ability to provide goals for teammates made him a unique right-back. Most believe there is no substitute in world soccer for the Liverpool academy graduate. For that reason, Babbel, who played 73 times for Liverpool between 2000 and 2002, feels the team could be stronger despite losing such a talented player. Advertisement 'Jeremie Frimpong is a different kind of right-back to Trent Alexander-Arnold,' the German said, via Poker Scout. 'Trent is unbelievable with the ball – Frimpong is also good on the ball, but not in the same style as Trent. 'The main strength of Frimpong is that he is very fast. He is one of the quickest players in the Bundesliga and he can play on the wing as well as in defence. Babbel was part of the squad that won three trophies in 2000/01. 'I would say defensively, he is better than Trent; that has been a big weakness for Trent in the past. 'Frimpong has been one of the main players for Bayer Leverkusen in the past couple of seasons and I think he is going to become a top player for Liverpool. It's a very good signing for them.' Advertisement Alexander-Arnold was booed by fans on his penultimate appearance for Liverpool and irked some by speaking Spanish in his unveiling press conference. Some supporters believe his decision to learn the language in advance indicates that he has been prioritizing his own wants above the team's for a prolonged period. This also chimes against Alexander-Arnold's claims that he agonized over the decision for months. 'I love Trent as a player, but what is he doing going to Real Madrid? I know he did his first press conference in Spanish to show that he respects the club, but let me tell you, he will definitely speak English in the changing room. Advertisement 'I would have thought that he'd stay in Liverpool because he grew up there, but we're talking about Real Madrid here, who are the biggest club in the world. 'If it's his dream to go there, then you have to respect that. It's sad for me, because I loved watching him for Liverpool.'
