Abbott haul puts Hampshire in charge against Bears
High-class fast bowling from Kyle Abbott put Hampshire in command against Warwickshire in their County Championship tussle at Edgbaston.Abbott took 5-47, his second five-for in successive games, as Warwickshire were bowled out for 194 to sustain a first innings deficit of 106. It was superb, pitched up, swing bowling at the head of a strong collective effort from a seam attack against which only Ed Barnard (58) looked comfortable.Hampshire then leaned hard on Fletcha Middleton's 76 from 124 balls as they reached 159-6 in their second innings. They lead by 265 overall, a significant advantage on a pitch still assisting the seamers.
Warwickshire resumed on the second morning on 27-2 and swiftly lost both overnight batters. Nightwatcher Olly Hannon-Dalby edged Abbott to first slip before John Turner struck a crucial blow when Tom Latham, fresh from 184 on his debut last week, fell for just five when he edged to third slip.On a grey morning, against a swinging ball, batting was tricky. Sam Hain and Beau Webster grafted hard to add 62 in 21 overs, but Hampshire's seamers sustained the pressure and Abbott removed both just before lunch. Hain's dogged 23 was ended by a perfect outswinger. A nifty inswinger brought Webster's fluent 41 to a close when he inside-edged a drive on to his middle stump.Barnard, nudging the England selectors in this match with a half-century to follow his four wickets, defied with discipline but without support. Zen Malik was late on a straight ball from Brad Wheal and Ethan Bamber flicked James Fuller to mid-wicket. Barnard reached an accomplished 43-ball 50 but then nicked Abbott to wicketkeeper Ben Brown who collected again when Che Simmons edged Turner.
Hampshire's second innings began in the day's first sunshine but the ball continued to move around and while Middleton settled, partners came and went. None of the other top six batters passed 15 as Mark Stoneman edged Hannon-Dalby to first slip, Bamber drew edges from Nick Gubbins and Tom Prest and Webster removed Brown, lbw, and Liam Dawson, caught at second slip, in three balls.At 99-5, Hampshire were in danger of relinquishing their advantage but Middleton and Toby Albert added 52 in 15 overs to reassert their side's control. Albert (29 not out) made important runs for the second time in the match while Middleton reached 50, off 71 balls, for the first time in 10 attempts this season. Though he was bowled by Simmons just before the close, on a pitch which examines the batters' powers of technique and diligence, his work, like Fuller's in the first innings, was of immense value.

Benjamin Sesko has reportedly made his decision on where he will be playing next season following months of speculation. The RB Leipzig striker has been at the centre of a fierce transfer battle between Manchester United and Newcastle, with both clubs identifying the 22-year-old as a key summer target. Now, a report in Slovenia claims the highly rated forward has settled on his next move — and it could trigger a major shake-up in the Premier League 's striker market. According to Delo, Sesko has decided to join Newcastle , with the Magpies beating off strong competition from Old Trafford to land one of Europe's most promising young attackers. The Slovenian outlet reports that Newcastle's proposal won out after a drawn-out saga that saw Arsenal, United, and Newcastle all linked. Arsenal dropped out earlier this summer, opting instead for Viktor Gyokeres, while United had turned their full attention to Sesko after ending their pursuit of Aston Villa 's Ollie Watkins. United's interest was led by director of recruitment Christopher Vivell, who previously worked with Sesko at RB Salzburg and has described the 6ft 4in forward as having the potential to become one of the world's top strikers. Manager Ruben Amorim had also made him a priority, having already brought in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to strengthen the attack. But Sesko is now said to have chosen Newcastle — a decision that may be closely tied to the uncertain future of Alexander Isak. Mail Sport revealed on Friday that Liverpool had a £110million bid for Isak rejected, with Newcastle holding out for £150m. Isak is believed to be pushing for a move and has been training alone at former club Real Sociedad, having pulled out of the Magpies' pre-season tour with an apparent thigh issue. Newcastle have made clear that no sale will go ahead unless a suitable replacement is secured — and Sesko has long been top of their wishlist. The Bundesliga side signed Sesko from Red Bull Salzburg in 2023 and have an informal agreement to allow him to leave if a suitable offer is made. It is understood that Newcastle will be expected to pay Leipzig somewhere between £60m and £70m plus add-ons. Sesko scored 21 goals in all competitions last season and has 16 goals in 41 senior appearances for Slovenia. He has drawn comparisons to Erling Haaland for his blend of height, pace and technical ability — and is seen by Newcastle as a ready-made replacement should Isak get his wish. As for Man United, they may now be forced to explore alternatives. Amorim's side struggled badly in front of goal last season and were hoping Sesko would be the final piece in a new-look forward line. Rasmus Hojlund's future remains unclear, with the Dane insisting he wants to stay and fight for his place — but competition was always expected. United have also made enquiries about Brentford's Yoane Wissa, while Wolves' Jorgen Strand Larsen has been discussed too.

Keating was part of the England squad that retained the Euros on Sunday by beating Spain on penalties in the final. However, just days after lifting the trophy in Basel, Keating was fined for not paying her car tax. On Wednesday, magistrates fined Keating £440 and ordered her to pay back duty of £79.17 and costs of £20 after she had been stopped for driving a Volkswagen Polo without the correct tax back in December. The 21-year-old did not attend Tameside Magistrates' court and the case was heard in her absence. Just a few weeks before the Euros began, Keating was cleared of drugs charges after Greater Manchester Police dropped them. Keating and her mother, Nicola, were charged last June with possession of the Class C drug nitrous oxide. They both pleaded not guilty and the charges were dropped in June. "I'm relieved the charges have been dropped — as I've always said, I did nothing wrong," Keating told the BBC. "It's been a difficult time, but I've always known the truth. Now I'm just looking forward to focusing fully on the Euros and spending time with my family." Keating did not play at the Euros with Hannah Hampton starring as first-choice goalkeeper, but she was an important part of the squad and was part of the jubilant celebrations that took place after they returned to the UK. A victory parade took place on Wednesday in front of more than 50,000 fans, with England captain Leah Williamson stating: "I'm holding back tears. I've been crying all down The Mall. "This is unbelievable, this is probably one of the best [things] we have ever been a part of, so thank you for coming out. "There are many ways to win a football match. And we repeatedly did it the hard way, but you can see how much we care about playing for England and how much we love it." Manchester United are opening their doors to fans for away game screenings at Old Trafford this season. The new scheme, which will cost fans £25 per match, will see supporters unable to land away match tickets the chance to watch United from the international suite at Old Trafford. In what has been described by insiders as a pub-like atmosphere, the suite will be decked out with big screens showing the games, as well as a bar and hot food. The £25 admission includes one free drink as well as a portion of food in what sources feel represents a value-for-money experience. Season ticket holders now have the chance to buy tickets to stadium screenings of the first three away games of the season, at Fulham, at Manchester City, and at Brentford.
