Fake Labubu dolls prompt 'urgent' warning from CPSC: 'Dangerous, illegal'

Yahooa day ago
The fakes are "small enough for a child to fit the doll in their mouth" and "break apart easily."
The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued an 'urgent' warning Monday about knockoff Labubu dolls posing a 'serious risk of choking and death to young children.'
The warning only applies to fake versions of the Labubu dolls — sometimes referred to as 'Lafufu dolls' — which are sold as plush figures and plush keychains. The CPSC said it has received multiple reports that the fake Labubus are 'small enough for a child to fit the doll in their mouth and block their airway' and 'break apart easily, releasing small pieces that can become choking hazards.'
'These fake Labubu dolls are dangerous, illegal, and have no place in American homes,' Peter Feldman, the acting chairman of the CPSC, said. 'No parent should have to wonder if a toy will stop their child from breathing. Protect your children and buy only from reputable sellers.'
The CPSC said its investigators have identified several U.S. shipments from China containing the fake Labubu dolls.
'Federal law prohibits the importation and sale of consumer products that fail to meet CPSC safety standards,' the CPSC said in its warning. 'CPSC will continue aggressive enforcement at U.S. ports to block dangerous imports before they reach American families.'
The original Labubu doll is a 'blind box' collectible toy manufactured by Pop Mart, a Chinese toy company. The dolls started to grow in popularity in 2024, with many fans crediting Blackpink star Lisa with helping to start the craze.
Pop Mart's revenue has exploded thanks to the global interest in Labubus. Its product line has grown to over 300 variants of the toy, but it's the secrecy over what's actually in the blind box and how quickly Pop Mart sells out when it does its restocks that have contributed to growing reseller markets, CNN reported. While the average retail price of a Labubu is $32, some resale prices have reached up to $7,000.
How to spot fake Labubu dolls
The CPSC urges consumers to take note of what could be a potentially dangerous, fake Labubu doll by keeping the following guidelines in mind:
Unusually deep discounts could indicate it's a fake product.
Authentic Pop Mart Labubu dolls have a holographic Pop Mart sticker, a scannable QR code that leads to the official Pop Mart site and a UV stamp on one of the doll's feet.
Authentic Pop Mart Labubu dolls have nine teeth.
The product should only be bought from trusted, legitimate stores or websites.
Check the toy before giving it to your child. Especially if it's a small keychain, make sure nothing easily falls off and check for other choking hazards.
If you experience any injury or dangerous product defect, report it to the CPSC here.

Review: Spy thriller ‘World Pacific' turns wartime intrigue into farce, folly and adventure

No one is to be trusted in the fantastic, fanciful and often extremely funny novel, 'World Pacific,' from San Francisco writer Peter Mann. Much like Mann's debut novel, 'The Torqued Man,' this second, equally farcical novel, revolves around real-world events that touch, at least tangentially, on World War II. But this time, the setting, to which the novel's title 'World Pacific' refers, leads several dubious and unreliable characters toward the 1940 World's Fair on Treasure Island. One of these characters, and perhaps the most dubious of them all, is Richard 'Dicky' Halifax, a self-proclaimed author-adventurer, very much in the spirit of the real-life Richard Halliburton, who disappeared in 1939 in the same manner as Dicky does in the first few pages of this novel, while on an ill-prepared sailing journey from Hong Kong to San Francisco on a Chinese junk. The excursion is, in part, funded by a subscription service for young readers. In Dicky's case this subscription service would be 'The Dicky Halifax Junior Adventurers Club,' a series of letters that not only weaves in many an inappropriate reference to Dicky's crotch, but also operates as Dicky's central voice within the novel. Written in a folksy devil-may-care style, these letters, presented as chapters within 'World Pacific,' highlight Dicky's escape from many a tight spot. Or as Dicky writes in an early chapter, leading to his current predicament of being lost at sea: 'Dear boys, This is where the story starts to get hairy. Of all the close scrapes I've had, all the times I've blundered into a hornets' nest or was caught taking pictures of military installations on Gibraltar or got dragged to a pretty lady's bed only to find I was flaccid as a gym sock, this one took the cake.' The writing, particularly in the Junior Adventurers Club chapters, feels wonderfully inventive, often playing with clichés of the period and then elevating them through Dicky's individual voice and upbeat, foolish optimism. But Dicky is certainly not alone in this novel. While the connection to a talented émigré painter of Jewish descent, Hildegard 'Hilde' Rauch, feels at first tenuous, it soon becomes clear from a letter addressed to Hilde from her comatose brother that the now-lost-at-sea and presumed dead Dicky, might just be the key to understanding his current state. Or, as the suicide note from her brother so eloquently puts it, 'I just can't bear to live in a world without Dick.' Besides what becomes a sizable number of euphemisms and allusions (one, by sheer absurdity, that kept me laughing for a good five minutes), there is a plot to this novel, and a very twisty one at that. For, even as Hilde searches for answers and Dicky stumbles from one madcap adventure to the next, another character — Simon Faulk, a British intelligence officer on the hunt for Nazi spies and who also harbors a serious grudge against author-adventurer Dicky Halifax — takes the stage. All of which confirms that, along with being a quixotic tale of adventure complete with truth-telling sidekicks and wild goose chases, 'World Pacific' is, like Mann's first novel, a spy thriller of ingenious quality.

Kaskade is ready to bring Sun Soaked to Orange County

Kaskade has a plan — and it's been seven years in the making. The electronic music powerhouse brings his soulful house beats and favorite performers to Orange County next month, landing beachside at Sun Soaked in Huntington Beach on Sept. 6. The sold-out event has a stacked lineup, including Malaa, Meduza, Sidepiece, Walker & Royce, Anabel Englund, MPH and Skilah. It wasn't easy to get there, but this Insomniac-produced event has been a dream in the making for Kaskade (Ryan Raddon), the American DJ and Grammy-nominated artist. 'Sun Soaked was the party I always wanted to go to — 10 toes in the sand, blue sky above, the ocean providing an ambient soundtrack, breeze on climate control and visuals courtesy of our surroundings,' he told the Daily Pilot. 'The outpouring of support for Sun Soaked from day one let me know I wasn't alone in wanting this.' Based on a few iterations over the years, including some growing pains, the audience continues to remain committed, he said. 'I get 'Bring back Sun Soaked' DMs and comments almost more than any other request,' he said. 'Somehow, this whole concept has struck a chord with my West Coast fans as well as those traveling in from all over the world.' So why Orange County? 'Because they said yes,' he said. 'Somehow, it's still difficult to get through red tape and obstacles — even when everything is on the up-and-up and in order. So, we search for the best spot to do it, then put the puzzle together when we find a partner who sees it the way we do.' It worked out and Huntington Beach was ready to host. Now, hundreds are expected to hit the sand for the artist's curated experience. 'The lineup for Sun Soaked is your favorite DJ's favorite DJ's playlist,' he said. 'If Malaa is the gritty back-alley warehouse, Meduza is the panoramic cliffside sunset.' It's all about creating the right vibe, he added. 'There's a musical landscape that belongs at Sun Soaked, and when we have talent like MPH who has insane musical versatility combined with Sidepiece, who load their sets with unreleased edits and mashups, then we drop in Walker & Royce, who are essentially the friends you have that say they don't take themselves too seriously, then punch you in the gut with the most rubbery bassline that leaves you stunned,' he said. Fans will also be impressed to see some of the top talents in house and electronics on stage. 'Bring in Annabel Englund with her instantly recognizable, haunting singer/songwriter vocals that emotionally connect with a crowd in the time it takes to pop a bag of popcorn, and of course — Skilah, who is perfecting the art of melding a party vibe into a full-on live experience,' he said. 'The vibe is eclectic, but they all play off each other in a super uplifting way.' It's a moment he's been waiting for, he said. 'I'm hoping to keep up,' he said. 'Sun Soaked 2025 is sold out, so I'm taking that as a positive response,' he said. 'When I announced it was happening, I could hear cheering in the streets. I mean, that could have been the people on my team, but I choose to believe it could be heard around the world.' That humor — plus an audience ready to dive into drops and live mixing — are just what he has in mind. He doesn't have the full plan and set pre-recorded, but he knows what works. 'I enjoy communicating with the audience in such a way that we take the journey in real time,' he said. 'I can't predict in my studio that there could be the entire front row screaming along to 'Let Me Go,' which will point me in the direction I need to go next. There will, of course, be fan favorites because those are my favorites, too. I guess in a way the audience decides what will be showcased. The louder they scream, the more I zoom in on that vibe that got them there.' Following several tough years in the music industry post-pandemic, especially for artists heading back to live performances and festivals, Kaskade wants the festival to bring people back together again. 'It has been important for us to dance again,' he said. 'During the pandemic, there was a while where I wondered if it would ever come back. I don't forget the despair that thought gave me, and I appreciate the gratitude it hardwired in me for each time it's happened since.' It comes down to creating an opportunity for music lovers to simply enjoy. 'Festivals are tricky for sure, but working hard at something I love is what brings me the most joy,' he said. 'I am bringing Sun Soaked back because it's much bigger than 'Kaskade,' it's a gathering where we can all appreciate the simple things we have around us, the magic of dancing with strangers and experiencing music we haven't heard. Knowing that the sun and the ocean remain constant sources of love and life even in the toughest of times is the legacy of Sun Soaked, and I hope that message is absorbed this year.' Sun Soaked 2025 is sold-out. Waitlist tickets for general admission and VIP are available for 2026
