SC Highway Patrol gives new updates on Aiken Co. tanker crash sending one to hospital
AIKEN, S.C. (WJBF) – NewsChannel 6 is gathering the latest details on a crash involving an 18-wheeler that sent one person to the hospital.
It happened Tuesday on I-20 off Exit 22, near the McDonalds and Waffle House on Highway 1.
While South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating, the Aiken County Sheriff's Office is urging the public to heed the warnings they have in place.
The Aiken County Sheriff's Office was one of several agencies on the scene for a type of crash law enforcement says rarely occurs.
'I go back to when we had the train derailment that happened years and years ago. But this is not something common that we see on a weekly basis,' said Major Jason Griffin.
According to Highway Patrol, the 2024 Freightliner was heading eastbound on I-20 when it ran off the left side of the road near Exit 22, then crashed between the two bridges running along the Highway 1 interchange.
Aiken County EMA, Aiken County Hazmat, SC Highway Patrol, SCDOT and others then came to support the Sheriff's Office.
'Law enforcement will typically arrive at these scenes first. Sometimes the fire department can get there first. But once you identify not only that you have a traffic collision—but then maybe there's hazardous materials involved as well—the resources just start to branch out from there,' Griffin said.
The hazardous material in the truck was identified as methyl acetate, a highly flammable substance used in lacquers and paint thinner and to make pharmaceuticals, but the spill did not cause any harm.
While Highway Patrol is investigating, The Sheriff's Office has detours on Highway 1 at East Frontage Road and Fulmer Road, and are urging the public to heed the warnings.
'When you get to these detours, again just be patient. We'll get you where you need to go methodically and as safe as possible to try to get the problem mitigated. Safety is obviously the most important thing for everybody out there on the roads,' said Griffin.
South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating exactly what caused that truck to veer off I-20.
Meanwhile the driver was taken to the hospital, but there are no updates on her conditions or injuries.
She is also not facing any charges at this time.
Count on NewsChannel 6 to bring you the latest as soon as it becomes available.

'They killed him and left him in the neighbor's yard', Augusta event calls for unity in face of gun violence
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF)- June is National Gun Violence Awareness Month and it is to raise awareness for gun violence in the United States. Phyllis Jackson knows first-hand about gun violence. In 2019 Jackson's 22-year-old son was shot and killed. 'My son, Gerald Waldon, was killed here in Augusta, he befriended an individual at work. And that individual, along with three others, came to came to the house, lured my son out of the home, and literally within the same neighborhood, they had planned to kill him. And they did just that. They killed him and left him in the neighbor's yard.' Ever since that tragic event, Jackson has been helping to raise awareness about the danger of guns. RELATED STORY: Witnesses talk about man killed in Walton Acres 'Kids are supposed to be able to be kids. Teenagers are supposed to be able to be teenagers. We can't afford to allow our kids to continue to go to the schools, go to malls, go to the grocery stores and have to worry if our child is going to come home. It's vitally important that we do something about it as a community. And if we're voting someone in in that position that we hold them accountable to do the same.' She hopes the community will come to an event Friday night. An 'Evening of Remembrance and Call to Action' will be held in downtown Augusta. 'This event will show everyone that the community stands together in hard times and good times. And in this event, we are remembering those that have been lost to gun violence. And we want to show those that are affected indirectly that you have a part to play in the rebuilding and standing together as one.' If you plan to attend, wear orange as that is the national color for gun violence awareness. The event will be held at the Jessye Norman Amphitheater beginning at 6pm, click here to 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Colorado State Patrol says trucker's brakes failed, causing I-70 crash that hurt 5 people
Colorado police have determined how a crash unfolded Wednesday that shut down I-70 for several hours and left multiple people injured. According to CSP, a Freightliner semi-truck with a trailer, driven by Leon Gamble of Texas, lost its brakes near the Eisenhower Tunnel while driving west along the interstate. The front of the truck crashed into the back of another Freightliner truck, and both vehicles veered off the left side of the road. Colorado State Patrol Authorities said the second truck rolled over and came to rest in the median on its passenger side. The trailer of the first truck struck a Toyota Rav4 heading east, and then reportedly came to a stop against a Toyota Tacoma. Authorities said five people were taken to the hospital for treatment. Four of those suffered minor injuries, but the driver of the second Freightliner suffered life-threatening injuries. CSP said the driver of the Tacoma was not injured. They issued Gamble a citation for careless driving causing bodily injury. The crash remains under investigation. Authorities asked anyone who witnessed the crash and hasn't spoken with investigators to call CSP dispatch at (970) 249-4392 and provide their information so an investigator can contact them.
