Colgate Palmolive to introduce more brands in India from its global portfolio

Time of India5 hours ago

FMCG major
Colgate-Palmolive
(India) plans to introduce more brands here from the company's global portfolio to upscale its play in India -- one of the drivers for its growth, MD & CEO Prabha Narasimhan said on Monday.
The company, having presence in the country with two brands - Colgate and Palmolive - currently operates in the oral care and personal care, and is in "active ongoing conversation" with the parent firm for expanding the portfolio.
"We are very excited about what all we can do in India, both with our existing brands and portfolio, and with what we can do with the things that we can bring in from the globe. We have tremendous support from our global counterparts in terms of their excitement about what we can achieve in India," Narasimhan told PTI.
About the Palmolive brand, which is currently operating in the personal care space with a premium body wash and hand wash range, Narasimhan said, they have tremendous potential and grow at 20 to 30 per cent CAGR.
When asked as whether
Colgate-Palmolive India
Ltd (CPIL) will extend the brand Palmolive in new segments, she added she would rather focus on introducing more brands.
"Actually, more than extending the brand Palmolive, we have a lot of products portfolio that is available globally. We are looking to see what of that product portfolio can legitimately be brought into India and make sense for the Indian consumer, and leverage the strengths that Colgate Palmolive India has. So that's a very active ongoing conversation," she added.
CPIL, which has been operating in India for the last 88 years, currently contributes around 4 to 5 per cent of the global revenue of the Midtown Manhattan, New York City-based multinational consumer products major Colgate-Palmolive Company.
According to Narasimhan, "in the coming years, the contribution of India will certainly increase."
India, with its over 1.4 billion population, is always a "central part" of Colgate's global strategy and is now among five markets, which are called out as being the drivers of growth.
"If you listen to our global CEO... who was speaking even recently at a conference where he talked about the fact that India will add more middle-class people in the next few years than any other country in the world, and therefore represents a tremendous opportunity for us," she said.
Besides, on the channel side, CPIL, as per its strategy, is also extending its play into the fast-growing
e-commerce channels
, by adding more digital-first brands, exclusive to online sales channels. It has launched Colgate Purple and Max Fresh Sensories range, mouthwash sticks, which is for a small audience in the market.
"We have quite a few, and we have a pipeline of many more," she added.
However, she also added that traditional trade, which is neighbourhood kirana stores, is actually the bulk of CPIL's business and critical for the company. It has a "tremendous relationship" with its distributors, many of whom have been with it for decades.
Earlier in May, All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation (AICPDF), an umbrella body of FMCG distributors pan-India, had called for the suspension of the purchase of all products of CPIL in Maharashtra, alleging deep discounting by it in favour of quick commerce channels.
However, Narasimhan said there is "enough room" for all the channels in the market.
Talking about the trend of consumers becoming more health-conscious, seeking better products and organic options, Narasimhan said consumers buy benefits and CPIL has the right science to deliver all of these benefits.
Recently, the oral care segment has witnessed heightened competition, where several brands have launched their toothpaste based on ingredients derived from traditional ayurveda and organic options.
"Indian consumers are sensible enough to know that they look for a benefit, they find products that deliver to that benefit, and that's our primary job," she said.

India rolls out red carpet for Tesla with new electric vehicle policy push

In a renewed push to bring Tesla to the Indian shores, the government has opened a new chapter in its electric vehicle strategy by launching a dedicated portal under the Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars in India (SPMEPCI). The initiative, unveiled by Union Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy, invites global electric vehicle (EV) makers to invest and set up local manufacturing units. 'Tesla can also apply, we are still open to Tesla,' said Kumaraswamy at the launch. He mentioned that formal communications would soon be sent to embassies of several countries, including the US, Germany, Vietnam, the UK, and Czechoslovakia. Though Tesla chief executive Elon Musk has earlier hinted at a desire for greater concessions, the American EV giant has so far chosen only to import and retail cars in India through company-owned showrooms. Still, this hasn't deterred the Indian government's efforts to woo Tesla for a larger play. VinFast's eligibility remains unclear Meanwhile, China's BYD remains sidelined due to ongoing restrictions on investments from countries sharing land borders with India. On the other hand, Vietnam's VinFast, which has already begun local manufacturing, may not qualify under SPMEPCI—unless it brings fresh investments of $500 million, a senior ministry official told The Economic Times. 'Their investment has already been made. Under the policy, if they come up with a fresh investment of $500 million—even in the same location—they are eligible for concessional import duties,' the official added. VinFast had earlier expressed hope of qualifying, citing significant investments already committed. What SPMEPCI offers? The SPMEPCI, first notified in March last year, was held up for over 15 months as guidelines were being finalised. While no official admission was made, the delay was widely speculated to be linked to Tesla's pending decision. The finalised policy now includes the following highlights: - Minimum investment: ₹4,150 crore within three years of application approval. Investment can be in plants, machinery, R&D, etc. - Start of manufacturing: Within three years of approval. - Domestic Value Addition (DVA): At least 25 per cent within three years and 50 per cent within five years, in line with the PLI scheme's SOPs. - Import duty concession: CBUs with a minimum CIF value of $35,000 will attract only 15 per cent customs duty, capped at 8,000 units per year for five years. - Eligibility: Applicants must have global automotive revenue of ₹10,000 crore and a minimum of ₹3,000 crore in global fixed assets. From greenfield to brownfield Initially, the policy only welcomed foreign companies setting up new (greenfield) facilities. However, after strong opposition from Indian automakers like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Mahindra & Mahindra, the guidelines were expanded to include brownfield investments—as long as they are clearly demarcated from existing manufacturing setups. This move is expected to attract both domestic and international players looking to scale or diversify operations within India. Low-key response, cautious optimism Despite the sops, industry response has been tepid. Government officials mentioned 4–5 OEMs showing early interest. Among attendees at the portal's unveiling were representatives from Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Hyundai Motor India, and Skoda Volkswagen. Some expressed a tentative interest in using the concessional import route, though not necessarily the full 8,000 units annually. On Mercedes-Benz, when asked if the German luxury carmaker had opted out, the minister clarified, 'The company has time to decide. They already have significant investments in India.'

Indian Railways to raise ticket prices for passenger trains from July 1

Suburban train travel and second-class travel for up to 500 km have been spared from any fare hike. However, 0.5 paise per kilometre hike will be implemented for distances more than 500 km New Delhi Indian Railways is set to increase ticket prices for passenger trains starting July 1, The Times of India reported, citing sources. Fares for non-AC mail and express trains will rise by 1 paisa per kilometre, while AC classes will see a 2 paise per kilometre increase, according to the news report. This will be the first hike in passenger train fares since 2020. Meanwhile, suburban train travel and second-class travel for up to 500 kilometre have been spared from any fare hike. However, 0.5 paise per kilometre hike will be implemented for distances more than 500 kilometres, the report added. This comes after the Railway Ministry earlier this month announced that Aadhaar authentication will become mandatory for booking Tatkal tickets online via the IRCTC website and mobile app starting July 1. From July 15, Aadhaar-based OTP verification will also be extended to Tatkal tickets booked at reservation counters and through authorised agents. 'Tatkal tickets shall be available for booking through computerised PRS (Passenger Reservation System) counters of Indian Railways/authorised agents only after authentication of a system-generated OTP, which shall be sent through the system on the mobile number furnished by the users at the time of booking. This shall also be implemented by 15/07/2025,' the ministry said. The ministry said that the new authentication measures aim to curb misuse and ensure that Tatkal ticketing benefits genuine passengers. As part of this, authorised agents will also be restricted from booking Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the booking window—between 10 am and 10.30 am for AC classes, and 11 am to 11.30 am for non-AC classes.

Ashok Leyland sees single-digit growth in medium, heavy vehicle segment

Industry growth is expected to be driven by the government investment in infrastructure and tailwinds such as the good performance of core industries, Sanjeev Kumar, President - M&HCV said Press Trust of India New Delhi The medium and heavy commercial vehicles segment in India is expected to grow in the single digit this fiscal, recovering from a decline of 3 per cent in FY25, a top official of Ashok Leyland said on Tuesday. The Chennai-based firm is planning to grow ahead of the industry this year and is focusing on expanding its presence in North India, the largest market for commercial vehicles (CVs), Sanjeev Kumar, President - M&HCV at Ashok Leyland Ltd, told reporters here. "When you look at last year, the industry volume came down by 3 per cent. Our understanding is that this is the fourth year running. "If you look at the CV industry, generally it stays good for three years, and then itgoes through a downtrend. So we expect the industry to grow, at least in single digit," he said when asked about the industry outlook. The industry growth is expected to be driven by the government investment in infrastructure and tailwinds such as the good performance of core industries, Kumar said. On the company's growth prospects, he said every original equipment manufacturer (OEM) tries to outpace the total industry growth, and "same is the case for Ashok Leyland and we want to increase our market share". Commenting on the significance of the North Indian market, he said, it is the largest market for the CV sector and contributes to more than a third of the total industry volume. "We want the North (market) contribution to go at least 30 per cent. Right now, its contribution is a bit low...," Kumar added. Further, he said, "We have gained nearly 6.5 per cent market share in the last three remain dedicated to strengthening our presence in Northern India." As part of its expansion in the said market, Ashok Leyland plans to add more than 50 touchpoints this year. The company operates almost 300 channel outlets across the region.
