You're Not ‘Using' AI, You're Raising It. It's Watching.

Last week, I changed my perspective. A big, change-your-behavior epiphany. In his beautiful, even profound, new book, Raising AI: An Essential Guide to Parenting Our Future, long-time friend and AI luminary De Kai reframes the AI dialogue. They're not tools, slaves or gods, they're our children.
I've long opined on the lack of limits between what we think of as human and what AI entities can eventually become. In this Forbes article from 2017 I coined the term 'Proxy AI,' which predicted the AI mimics we have today. In this 2018 article, I made the case against long-held cuddly teddy bears like creativity and empathy as being uniquely human. They're not.
While my predictions have borne out, De Kai has gone much further and in a direction that is more humane, even essential. And fairly so. While I'm a well-informed futurist, educator and venture investor, De Kai is a true AI pioneer, having achieved theoretical and applied breakthroughs such as the engine behind Google Translate.

At a recent gathering in Manhattan at the home of Blue Man Group co-founder Chris Wink, De Kai articulated his objective: "We must consciously parent our AI, guiding these digital children with the best humanity has to offer. The stakes are high."
Professor De Kai approaches our technological progeny not as tools, but as entities shaped by our actions. It's more than a metaphor. If we neglect to nurture and instill values we desire in our "AI children," we risk raising entities reflecting the worst of ourselves.
Not everyone aligns with De Kai's nurturing paradigm. Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen recently published a techno-optimistic manifesto, decrying ethical oversight as stifling innovation. To Andreessen and like-minded leaders, AI development should be liberated from cautionary restraints to accelerate development and diffusion. De Kai doesn't disagree entirely. Rather, in addition to rapid advances in AI technologies and business models, he champions the pivotal role of personal responsibility for each of us.
From the doomsday camp, AI researcher Eliezer Yudkowsky positions unchecked AI advancement as potentially catastrophic. Consider the title of his forthcoming book: If Anyone Builds It, We All Die. Not optimistic.
De Kai keynotes the 2024 UBS Digital Conference alongside Professor Geoffrey Hinton, considered by ... More many to be the "godfather of AI". After hearing De Kai's perspective, Hinton offered to endorse his upcoming book—a rare and notable honor.
De Kai advocates more than a middle path. (You might say it's orthogonal.) Reflecting both the epochal potential and threat of AI, he urges us to muster our most human of roles, that of the parent. The best solution for each of us, and all of us together, requires us to recognize our personal impact on the AI entities with which we engage, and the implications for ourselves and society at large.
"The only two contexts I'm aware of in which humans are referred to as 'users' are technology and illicit drugs," De Kai quipped. The implications are clear: when we neglect our responsibilities as creators and stewards, we invite unintended consequences. Just ask Microsoft, whose 2016 chatbot Tay, attracting users with nefarious objectives, quickly descended into a racist, misogynistic parrot.
Today, generative AI foundational models like OpenAI's GPTs or Anthropic's Claude versions reflect more conscientious upbringing, yet no large tech company, even the best funded, can ensure a healthy generation of AI agents. AI systems learn from us. Not just from what we say we prefer, but from what we do. They're optimized to discern, serve—and leverage—our preferences, often (though not always) for someone else's profit.
We cannot afford to abrogate this responsibility to big tech or even to government. Consider every interaction you have each day with dozens of apps. Not just generative AI chatbots, but also the AI systems behind the dozens of apps we rely on each day, from Uber and Amazon to social media and Spotify. They're deciphering our desires and behaviors, to better serve and exploit. (It's a conundrum I refer to as the King Customer Paradox.)
Every click, share and comment, each question and direction, teaches algorithms who we are, what we value and how we interact. If we yearn for more humane digital environments, we must act as such.
Consider the long-failed parenting strategy, 'Do as I say, not as I do.' Instead, interact with nurture, not negligence.

Raising AI helped me discover my own critical blind spot. In this 2018 article in Harvard Business Review, I urged a fundamental rethink of work, purpose and economic systems as a result of the multi-decade rise of AI. My call-to-action is even more urgent today; however, what I missed was it's not just about our sense of purpose and the lives we humans live.
It's also about our AI offspring. They matter. They're evolving toward agency and sentience. They're interacting with us, with each other, with the world at large.
During his session, De Kai shared a disquieting prediction:
'Ours is the last generation of human beings who will be parents to our AI offspring. Soon they'll be raising themselves.' Perhaps soon will be the last time they'll look longingly to us as superior beings.
Amidst the future-of-humanity buzz of the book launch event, it occurred to me how beautifully appropriate our event space was. Wink's Blue Man Group is an ultramarine metaphor for our rising AI agents: like his iconic, mischievous blue men, AI generates new beings, new collaborators. 2026 Kia EV6 Review, Pricing, and Specs

Overview The 2026 Kia EV6 compact electric SUV is a veritable Swiss army knife. With a spacious five-passenger interior, a choice of several rear- or all-wheel-drive powertrains, and Kia's usual attention to design and features, it's easy to zero in on an EV6 that fits your needs. The dual-motor GT is pricey but packs a 641-horsepower electric punch that enables sub-3.5-second sprints to 60 mph. The Light Standard Range single-motor base model is slower but is roughly $20,000 less expensive. Regardless of how much power it has, every EV6 is responsive and fun to drive. It also boasts impressive charging speeds, taking the battery from 10 to 80 percent in 20 minutes or less on a 350-kW DC fast charger. What's New for 2026? The Kia EV6 received a makeover, a larger battery, and a host of smaller updates for 2025, so we expect no changes for 2026. Pricing and Which One to Buy The price of the 2026 Kia EV6 is expected to start around $45,000 and go up to $66,000 depending on the trim and options. Light $45,000 (est) Wind $52,000 (est) GT-Line $56,000 (est) GT $66,000 (est) 0 $10k $20k $30k $40k $50k $60k $70k $80k $90k $100k We're charmed by the top-spec 601-hp GT (641 with launch mode) and its heroic performance, but we figure most EV buyers are more interested in maximum driving range over maximum speediness. For those folks, we recommend the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive Wind trim, not only because it's the most affordable way to get all-weather traction, but also because the dual motors generate a combined 320 horsepower versus the single motor's lower power output. Going with the standard 19-inch wheels also preserves driving range. Engine, Transmission, and Performance The EV6 is available with a single electric motor mounted on the rear axle that gives it rear-wheel drive, or with electric motors on both front and rear axles that enable all-wheel drive. While all-wheel-drive models pump out either 320 or 641 total horsepower, the rear-drive example makes do with a choice of 167 or 225 horsepower. We drove a 320-hp GT-Line AWD in Europe and enjoyed its satisfying acceleration, agile handling, and adjustable regenerative brake settings. The 601-hp GT (641 with launch mode) GT performance model sits at the top of the lineup and comes with enhancements such as an electronic limited-slip differential, firmer chassis tuning, an adaptive suspension, and stouter brakes. 0–60-MPH Times At our test track, the 320-hp, AWD GT-Line model zipped to 60 mph in just 4.5-seconds. That'll get you to the next EV charging station plenty fast. The rear-wheel drive model provides more range but it also needed 6.7 seconds to reach 60 mph in our testing. If you prioritize maximum straight-line performance, the 576-hp GT has you covered; in our testing, it rushed to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds. We also tested a 2023 Kia EV6 GT as part of a 0-to-150-to-0 speed test where it returned to a stop in just 31.2 seconds, only a tenth slower than a Toyota Supra. View Exterior Photos Kia Range, Charging, and Battery Life The entry-level Light rear-wheel drive model comes with a 63.0-kWh battery pack with a KIA-estimated range of 237 miles. All other EV6s are equipped with an 84.0-kWh unit. EPA range estimates for the larger pack land at 319 miles for RWD and 295 with AWD, up 9 and 13 miles, respectively, from last year's model with a slightly smaller 77.4-kWh pack. The GT-Line with AWD drops to 270 miles of range, and the mighty GT offers just 231 miles of range. Along with an operating voltage of 800, Kia says its battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in under 18 minutes when plugged into a 350-kW fast charger. We tested this claim and confirmed that it's for real. This same setup is also said to add 70 miles in less than 5 minutes. The 11-kW onboard charger is expected to refill the battery from 10 to 100 percent in 7 hours when hooked up to a Level 2 outlet. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG The EPA hasn't released any fuel economy information for the 2025 or 2026 EV6 yet, but the 2024 single-motor EV6 has a combined EPA rating of up to 117 MPGe; the dual-motor variant is rated at 109 MPGe with the standard 19-inch wheels and 96 MPGe when rolling on the optional 20-inch wheels. Go for the high-performance GT model, and the combined estimate drops to 83 MPGe. MPGe stands for miles per gallon of gas equivalent, an EPA metric that estimates PHEV and EV vehicle fuel efficiency. We'll update this section as soon as official EPA estimates are published. For more information on the EV6's fuel economy, visit the EPA website. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo The EV6's interior design and layout are not as daring as the car's exterior styling, but it looks modern and attractive. Although the center console doesn't slide back and forth and there are no front-seat footrests like there are on the Ioniq 5, the EV6 mixes high-tech content, such as a large, digitized dashboard screen, with practical elements like a floating center console containing clever storage solutions. Other touches that stand out are the two-tone, two-spoke steering wheel, the prominent start button on the center console, and the tastefully placed gold accents throughout the cockpit. The EV6 has a flat floor and a wheelbase—the distance between the front and rear wheels—that's as long as the three-row, mid-size Kia Telluride's, so passenger space is generous. There are also 28 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back seat and 54 cubic feet in total with the rear seatbacks folded flat. There's more storage space under the front trunk, too, but it's not as big as expected. View Interior Photos Kia Infotainment and Connectivity The infotainment system runs through a 12.3-inch touchscreen that's an extension of the EV6's 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. However, the design and performance of the menu structure and navigation are unimpressive. Along with the ability to accept over-the-air updates and respond to myriad voice commands, the system includes popular features such as wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Additionally, the stereo can be upgraded to a Meridian unit with 14 speakers. Safety and Driver-Assistance Features Kia packs the EV6 with a variety of standard driver-assistance technology that includes automated emergency braking and automatic high beams. Several other optional assists can be added for an even safer experience. Unfortunately, unlike Hyundai, it doesn't come with any complimentary scheduled maintenance. 2026 Porsche Macan EV Review, Pricing, and Specs

Overview The Macan is Porsche's bestseller, so it's no surprise that this is the hallowed automaker's first gas model to make the leap to electric-only propulsion. All three of the Macan EV's powertrains provide immediate thrust without compromising the refined chassis dynamics that make Porsche's compact luxury SUV a standout among less athletic competitors. The Macan EV pairs its standout performance with impressive practicality and ample range, offering roomy cabin quarters and up to 308 miles of grin-inducing driving on a single charge. The Macan EV is sold as an alternative to its gas counterpart (reviewed separately), though it is good enough to be a worthy replacement. What's New for 2026? With the introduction of the rear-wheel-drive base model and the top-tier 4S trim last year, Porsche has decided to take a breather on Macan EV updates for 2026. Pricing and Which One to Buy The price of the 2026 Porsche Macan EV is expected to start around $78,000 and go up to $108,000 depending on the trim and options. Base $78,000 (est) 4 $81,000 (est) 4S $87,000 (est) Turbo $108,000 (est) 0 $25k $50k $75k $100k $125k $150k $175k While the Turbo model offers up to 630 horsepower, the 4 offers more driving range, so we'd stick with that trim and its 402-hp powertrain even though its acceleration isn't as satisfying. Porsche's business model includes offering a very long list of options, packages, paint colors, and wheel designs, which is great for creating a Macan EV that's perfectly tailored to your taste. But it can also increase the temptation to spend a lot more than the Macan EV's base price. For that reason, we'll leave the customization up to you and your budget, but we do recommend the Premium package, which adds 14-way power-adjustable front seats with heat and ventilation, heated rear seats, four-zone automatic climate control, and a Bose stereo. EV Motor, Power, and Performance The Macan EV's base powertrain is a single, rear-mounted electric motor that can produce up to 355 horsepower when its overboost function is activated; otherwise, it puts 335 horsepower out to the rear wheels. The 4, 4S, and Turbo models feature all-wheel drive thanks to an electric motor on each axle. While the Macan 4 EV produces a maximum of 402 horsepower, the 4S pumps out 509 hp, and the Turbo ups the ante to 630 hp. The 4 tops out at a claimed 136 mph, the 4S at 149 mph, and the Turbo at 161 mph. All models feature air suspension with adaptive dampers, and the 4S and Turbo can be had with a torque vectoring system. Essentially an electronically controlled differential on the rear axle, it helps to make the crossover feel more nimble on a curvy road. Rear-wheel steering is also optional on the Macan EV. We've had the chance to drive the Macan EV in nearly all its configurations and came away impressed with its performance. While the acceleration of the base RWD and 4 models isn't particularly quick, the extra power in the 4S and Turbo models gives them the neck-snapping thrust EVs are generally known for. Handling is quite engaging, and the Macan EV's battery pack gives it a low center of gravity, giving it a stable mid-corner feel. The steering is quick, although we don't feel the calibration is up to Porsche's typical standards, and the optional rear-wheel steering system shortens the Macan EV's turning radius at low speeds and provides additional stability at higher speeds. 0–60-MPH Times At our test track, the Turbo model got to 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds, significantly quicker than the gas-powered Macan GTS. The 4S, 4, and base models will be progressively slower, but even the least powerful RWD Macan should get to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds by our estimates. When we get a chance to strap our test gear to the lower-powered Macan EV variants, we'll update this story with acceleration results. View Exterior Photos Porsche Range, Charging, and Battery Life The Macan EV utilizes a 95.0-kWh battery and supports DC fast-charging at up to 270 kW. In our testing, we got the battery from 10 percent to 90 percent charge in 33 minutes. While the Macan EV uses an 800-volt architecture to achieve such charging speeds, it also has a novel feature that essentially splits the battery into two 400-volt units when hooked up to a 400-volt charger, allowing charging speeds up to 135 kW. The Macan EV is also capable of AC charging at up to 11 kW. The EPA estimates that the Macan EV has EPA range estimates of 308 miles for the Macan 4, and 288 miles for the 4S and the Turbo. When we get the chance to test its real-world range, we'll update this section with results. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe The EPA hasn't released any fuel economy information for the 2026 Macan EV yet, but last year's Macan 4 EV delivered 107 MPGe city and 89 MPGe highway. The Macan Turbo EV was rated for 99 MPGe city and 84 MPGe Highway. The 4S model received 98 MPGe city and 83 MPGe highway ratings. We haven't yet tested the Macan EV on our real-world 75-mph highway fuel economy test, but we'll post the results here when we do. MPGe stands for miles per gallon of gas equivalent, an EPA metric that estimates PHEV and EV vehicle fuel efficiency. For more information about the Macan EV's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo The Macan EV's cabin features integrated ambient lighting and vegan-friendly leather-free seats. Recycled materials are used throughout the interior, including floor mats crafted from regenerated nylon. Overall, the interior lacks panache and doesn't live up to the expectations of luxury set by the Macan EV's price tag. Since the Macan EV doesn't need to pack an engine under the hood, the crossover pairs its 18-cubic-foot rear cargo space with an additional storage nook in the front with a claimed 3 cubic feet of capacity. With the rear seats folded down, Porsche says the rear cargo area expands to 47 cubic feet. View Interior Photos Porsche Infotainment and Connectivity The Macan EV utilizes a 12.6-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.9-inch central touchscreen. A second 10.9-inch display that sits in front of the passenger and allows them to view video content while the car is in motion is an optional extra. The head-up display also uses augmented reality to overlay elements like navigation onto the driver's view of the outside world. The infotainment system is compatible with Apple CarPlay and features a voice assistant, activated by saying "Hey Porsche." Safety and Driver-Assistance Features The Macan EV comes standard with most of the driver-assistance features you'd expect and offers a more sophisticated lane-keep function as an option. Key safety features are likely to include: Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist Available adaptive cruise control Warranty and Maintenance Coverage Porsche provides a competitive warranty plan that's comparable to what other luxury EV marques offer. However, coverage of the Macan EV's electrical components is capped at eight years or 100,000 miles, whereas Tesla offers unlimited mileage for the same amount of time. How I Became a Death-Defying 'Danger Angel'

From the June 1995 issue of Car and Driver. The most convincing testimony as to the driving skills of the dare­devil flock that has evolved into the Joie Chitwood Chevy Thunder Show is that, in more than 50 years of crash-and-burn mayhem, only two drivers associated with the Chitwoods­—one a guy called Lucky—have been killed in the line of duty. The stunt that killed Lucky Teeter at the Indianapolis State Fair during World War II was called "The Aerial Rocket Car Leap." Lucky had dreamed it up a decade earlier. It's a ramp-to-ramp leap in a car, and when his vehicle fell short of the second ramp, that was it for Lucky. After Lucky went to his reward, a young stuntman in his troupe named Joie Chitwood bought his equipment and started his own show. And when Joie died in 1988, he left behind his name and his show to his sons Joie Jr. and Tim. The rocket leap is now the specialty of 39-year-old Tim Chitwood. For 29 years, Tim has made a living spinning cars around on a dime and turning them into metal roughage. For this, the show's grand finale, he drives a Chevy Camaro full-throttle into the mouth of a steel tube just eight feet in diameter and 20 feet long. Barreling upward through it, he launches the Camaro through a shower of fire­works and over a row of four or five junkers before he lands some 65 feet away.
