Double Féile delight for Blackwater girls as they add football title to camogie crown
After battling their way to an impressive camogie crown, Blackwater dominated most games in this competition to come away with trophy and a trip to the national Féile in Derry at the end of June. They got off to an ominous start in Crossabeg, defeating the hosts by 8-1 to 1-2. Unlike its sister camogie tournament and the boys' competition, there's a cut-throat nature to the girls' football Féile, with only one team getting out of each group. Blackwater met Kilanerin in the second round-robin game, with the winner set to progress and the loser going home. In what was their toughest game of the week by far, the Over The Water club moved on with a 3-1 to 1-4 success. Blackwater hosted the semi-final, facing HWH-Bunclody in the last four, a game they won by 3-7 to 0-3. Clonee beat Shelmalier by 5-3 to 2-6 on the other side of the draw to set up an intriguing decider. The final saw Blackwater produce the goods at both ends of the field. Their defence continued to dominate and the attack fired as they won through and booked their national Féile place with a 2-10 to 1-3 success. Blackwater were already the Slaney Festival Premier camogie champions and will also be Wexford's top-tier Féile representative after completing an unbeaten campaign, with wins against St. Ibar's/Shelmalier, Oulart-The Ballagh and Naomh Éanna along the way. ADVERTISEMENT Learn more The St. Brigid's girls got their competition under way on home soil with a strong performance in a 4-2 to 0-2 win against Oulart-The Ballagh. They took top spot in the group with an equally impressive performance when seeing off St. Ibar's/Shelmalier by 2-3 to 0-2 in the second outing. The semi-final saw Blackwater forced to dig deep against a gutsy and talented Gorey side, with a 0-3 to 0-2 result showing just how closely matched the sides were on the night. A rematch with neighbours St. Ibar's/Shelmalier was in store in the final, with the hosts emerging with a 2-2 to 1-1 victory to take a first-ever top-tier title. Blackwater football squad: Caoimhe Dahill, Áine Cashe (capt.), Amber Clarke, Florence Stedman, Sophie Ruttledge, Anna Roche, Eirin Gahan, Josie O'Brien, Kate Jones, Sarah Leacy, Hazel Sinnott, Ciara Broderick, Mia Wright, Bronagh Cullen, Ruby Cullen, Ciona Egan, Hannah Kershaw, Ziva Burrows, Saoirse Walsh, Faye McDonald. Management: Aideen Sutton, John Broderick, Aisling Murphy, Aisling Berry, Róisín Roche. With just two pieces of silverware to win, the remaining 19 clubs squeezed into the shield competition. They split into six groups with the winners of each going into round-robin semi-finals. At the end of it all, Castletown came out on top of the pile, finding a dominant performance in the final to defeat St. Anne's by 1-7 to 0-1. They started in a group with Craanford-Monaseed and Ballygarrett-Réalt na Mara, winning against the former by 4-6 to 3-1 to get under way. The Ballygarrett girls were defeated by 4-8 to nil to send Castletown into the semi-final round-robin stage. There they faced Rathgarogue-Cushinstown first up, powering away with a 1-7 to 0-1 success. A 4-1 to 3-0 victory against Starlights propelled the Gorey District club into the final, where they met St. Anne's, who had defeated Horeswood and St. James' to make the decider. Another 1-7 to 0-1 win saw Castletown on their way to victory, and they will represent Wexford in the regional Féile in June. Castletown squad: Sophie Hughes, Elsie Noctor, Millie Morris, Bláithín Fitzpatrick, Lexi Kavanagh, Kayleigh Kavanagh, Éabha O'Shaughnessy, Ellie Byrne, Katie Hughes, Grace Redmond, Kayla Coade-Flynn, Sophia Finn, Caoimhe Jordan, Niamh Kavanagh, Isabella McNamara, Doireann O'Keeffe, Róisín Condren, Kate Kavanagh, Lily Mae Allen, Mary-Jane Morris, Emma Fitzpatrick. DH6 final: Glenville NS 5-12 Scoil an Chroi Naofa Blarney 0-3 Glenville NS gave an exhibition of hurling in the Rebel Og Allianz Sciath na Scol DH6 final in SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Monday. Josh Hassett got the scoring underway for Scoil an Chroi Naofa but when Conan O'Mahony found the net a minute later it spurred Glenville into action. Sharpshooter Mark Foley was in the thick of it and registered the next two of his hat-trick as the east Cork school took over. Another goal from O'Mahony helped Glenville into a comfortable 5-6 to 0-1 lead at the break. DH6 FINAL: Glenville team celebrate in capturing the Allianz Sciath na Scol DH6 final. Pic: Howard Crowdy The second half was more competitive from Scoil an Chroi Naofa where goalkeeper Fionn Lynch couldn't be faulted for his efforts, and in front of him Jake O'Leary did well. The teams were tied 1-3 apiece at half-time but there was no stopping the 'Hill after the break, and how fitting the trophy they received was the Éamonn Ryan Cup. Emma O'Mahony and Leah Scroope had got Berrings off to a flying start - the goal registered by Scroope - as they moved 1-3 to 0-1 ahead. A strong finish to the first half, which included a wonder goal from Naoise Bowe while on her knees, ensured parity at the half-way mark. The Berrings defence had to withstand a lot of pressure in the second half, and they held out until Galvin netted twice in quick succession. Caoimhe Barry landed another opportunity to put them 4-5 to 1-3 in front. Bowe's second major then paved the way for the celebrations. If a draw was ever a fair result, this was one. Credit to both teams for displaying tremendous skill and determination. The play was end-to-end, neither team willing to concede, and it took a last-minute point from Ballinadee's Paddy Coakley to save the day. It was Coakley (goal) and Jack O'Donoghue who had the south-east side up-and-running and when Donoghue bagged his side's second goal, it opened up a 2-2 to 0-2 advantage. His trio of points and one from Seán O'Keeffe closed the gap, 2-2 to 0-6 at the break. The second half continued nip and tuck with goalkeepers Darragh Buttimer and Liam O'Keeffe playing their part. Coakley extended Ballinadee's lead, his white flag would be cancelled by Keane. Keane then pushed Conna two up. O'Donoghue converted a 45 for just one to separate them. It took an outstanding point from distance by Coakley to earn a share of the spoils and a trophy for each school. H5 final: Aghabullogue NS 6-11 Cloughduv NS 3-4 An all-Muskerry H5 final with scores aplenty was won by Aghabullogue who did most of the damage in a wind-assisted opening half. An outstanding contribution from the two O'Riordans - Eoghan who scored three wonderful goals while Ben nailed 2-7 - was the highlight of a tremendous all-round performance. As well, there were four glorious points (all from play) from William Galvin. The second mid-Cork battle of the day was an exciting affair, and was only decided by second-half goals from Heather Ní Ghormáin (2) and Zoe Baston Nisbet. NÍ Ghormáin was a standout player for the winners and made her presence felt from the start, availing of two early whit flag opportunities to get the ball rolling. She then set up Aicha Hafidy for her team's first goal to open up a 1-3 lead. Before the break Caitríona O'Sullivan won a free which Clara Murphy converted to get the Coachford scoreboard into action. A Coachford outfit that was dealt a significant blow before any sliotar was thrown in due to a hand injury their captain Bláithín O'Sullivan sustained and deemed her unable to play.
