Karnataka Deputy CM Shivakumar admits Rs 25 lakh donation to National Herald
Vijayapura (Karnataka) [India], May 23 (ANI): Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Friday admitted that he had donated Rs 25 lakh to the National Herald, which he said was a newspaper run by his party.
'I donated Rs 25 lakh to the National Herald. It is a newspaper run by our party. My brother and I have given money to the publication. We have also given donations from our trust. We have given our hard-earned money; there is nothing to conceal,' Shivakumar told reporters.
The National Herald newspaper remains under the scanner of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in relation to an ongoing investigation by the central investigative agency. The investigation involves top Congress leaders, including Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi.
Shivakumar's reaction comes after his brother DK Suresh and Telangana CM Revanth Reddy were named in the chargesheet filed by ED in connection with the National Herald case.
Meanwhile, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) on Friday, alleged that Telangana has become an 'ATM for Scamgress' (Congress), with Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy implicated in corrupt practices.
Taking to X, sharing screenshots of newspaper reports related to National Herald case, he wrote, 'Telangana has become an ATM for Scamgress and it's been now corroborated by agencies As the ED charge sheets Telangana 'Bag Man' in National Herald case, he is trying his best to distract the people's attention from his corrupt practices The million dollar question is whether the NDA Govt will act this time or pardon Revant Reddy as they've done in the case of Amrut Scam, RR Tax and Civil supplies scam'
On Wednesday, the ED presented its opening arguments before Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court regarding the cognisance of its complaint against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and others in connection with a money laundering case linked to the National Herald.
In the opening submissions, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) S V Raju submitted that an offence of money laundering is made out in this case. He also submitted that there were proceeds of crime. It was also submitted that there was continuing criminal activity for the generation of proceeds of crime, which constitutes the offence of money laundering.
After hearing the opening submitted by ASG S V Raju and Special Counsel for ED Zoheb Hosain, the Special Judge listed the matter for remaining arguments from July 2 to July 8. Special judge Vishal Gogne listed the matter for day-to-day hearing on the point of cognisance of ED's Prosecution complaint against Gandhi and other accused persons.
The court listed the matter in July after hearing the submissions of defence counsel, who urged a hearing in July and gave voluminous documents totalling 5,000 pages. (ANI)

Deadline for CET registration extended by 48 hours in Haryana
Following strong demand from applicants and opposition leaders, the Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC) on Thursday announced a 48-hour extension for online registration of the Common Eligibility Test (CET) for Group C posts. According to a public notice issued by HSSC, applicants can now register on the official portal until June 14, instead of the previous deadline of June 12. The last date for fee submission has also been extended to June 16, replacing the earlier deadline of June 14. Opposition leaders had earlier urged HSSC to extend the registration deadline for CET Group C posts, citing technical issues that prevented many candidates from completing the process. After a three-year gap, HSSC announced CET in May, a preliminary written examination designed to shortlist candidates for various government roles across Haryana. Originally, online registration for CET Group C posts was open from May 28 to June 12, with June 14 set as the last date for fee submission. Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala said many applicants were unable to upload their documents due to technical glitches in the official portals on Thursday, and demanded an extension of the registration deadline.

Jharkhand HC fines former CM Madhu Koda for fourth time in Rural Electrification scam case
Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court has once again imposed a fine on former Chief Minister Madhu Koda, this time amounting to Rs 8,000, for repeatedly seeking adjournments in a case related to the Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electrification Scheme scam. This marks the fourth time Koda has been penalised for delaying proceedings. Koda had approached the High Court challenging the framing of charges against him in a lower court. However, during the hearing on Friday, his lawyer sought more time -- prompting the court's strong displeasure. Noting the pattern of repeated delays, the court imposed the fine and scheduled the next hearing for eight weeks later. Previously, Koda had been fined Rs 1,000 on December 13, 2024; Rs 2,000 on January 17, 2025; and Rs 4,000 on March 1, 2025; each time for requesting adjournments. With the latest penalty, the total fine now stands at Rs 15,000. The court has directed that all amounts be deposited with the Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority (JHALSA). The case against Koda stems from allegations of large-scale corruption during his tenure as Chief Minister of Jharkhand. He is accused of accepting a bribe of Rs 11.40 crore from a director of Hyderabad-based power infrastructure firm that had been blacklisted. In return, Koda allegedly awarded the company a tender for electrification works in six Jharkhand districts, including Latehar, Garhwa, and Palamu. The CBI, which is probing the case, has charged Koda with abuse of power and criminal misconduct. CBI counsel Prashant Pallav represented the agency during Friday's hearing. The electrification project was part of the Centre's Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY), under which Jharkhand had received Rs 467.76 crore in 2006 to electrify 27,359 villages. The project aimed to directly benefit over 29.26 lakh rural families. Madhu Koda was previously arrested in the case and spent two and a half years in judicial custody before being granted bail on July 30, 2013. The present proceedings concern the framing of charges based on the CBI's charge sheet, which Koda is contesting in the High Court.

Karnataka CM writes to union agri minister for timely intervention to help mango farmers
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday requested Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare Shivaraj Singh Chouhan for an urgent Price Deficiency Payment and Market Intervention Scheme for mango farmers in Karnataka. He has written to the union minister drawing his attention to the "severe distress" being faced by mango farmers across Karnataka due to a sharp and unsustainable decline in market prices during the current harvest season. Farmers in Srinivasapura, a major mango growing belt in Kolar district, bordering Andhra Pradesh, held protests and observed a taluk-level bandh on Wednesday, demanding a support price for mangoes and withdrawal of a ban imposed by the neighbouring state. Siddaramaiah has written to his Andhra Pradesh counterpart, Chandrababu Naidu, urging him to withdraw the ban on entry of "Totapuri Mangoes" from Karnataka into Chittoor district of his state. PTI
