487 beaches in Italy labelled Blue Flag for environmental excellence in 2025
ROME, May 13 (Xinhua) -- A total of 487 beaches in Italy have been awarded the "Blue Flag" eco-label for 2025, recognizing high standards in environmental sustainability, cleanliness, and safety, the Italian branch of the Foundation for Environmental Education said on Tuesday.
These beaches are spread across 246 seaside municipalities and 84 tourist resorts, according to the new report unveiled at the National Institute of Research. Italy's share accounts for approximately 11.5 percent of all Blue Flag beaches worldwide.
The latest figure also marks an increase from last year, when 485 beaches and 236 municipalities were honored.
The regions with the highest number of awarded sites were Liguria in the northwest, with 33 locations, and Apulia in the southeast, with 27.
Launched in Europe in 1987, the Blue Flag initiative has expanded to include 51 countries. It promotes sustainable coastal tourism by recognizing cities, marinas, and water-based resorts for excellence in environmental protection, water and land management, public services, and climate adaptation strategies.

The GBA's technological landscape is nothing short of revolutionary. Tencent's "Digital Library Cave" in Shenzhen's Nanshan Science Park is a prime example. By harnessing high-definition scanning, gaming-engine rendering and dynamic lighting, Tencent has recreated an immersive and interactive experience to preserve and share the rich cultural heritage of the Mogao Grottoes. This not only breathes new life into cultural heritage but also sets a precedent for using technology in education and tourism. As Nasar S. Al Ghanim, consul general of the State of Kuwait in Hong Kong, remarked, such innovations are "transforming how we engage with history and our daily life," highlighting the far-reaching implications for various sectors. Meanwhile, delegates agreed that the journey to the GBA mainland cities revealed a region that is not only at the forefront of technological innovation but also a paragon of livability, presenting a compelling case for global investment and collaboration. In Zhuhai, delegates admired coastal landscapes and eco-parks, with Inaki Amate, chairman of the European Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, comparing the city to Danang in Vietnam and Malaga in Spain. "Similarly, GBA mainland cities offer a work-life balance that drives innovation and attracts talent," Amate told Xinhua, noting "the GBA together as a global brand must be elevated collaboratively." A concrete-pouring ceremony of the fifth Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge was held on Friday in Bolikhamxay province, attended by Lao Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay Kommasith, Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Suriya Jungrungreangkit, and officials from both countries. The project is an important part of Lao's sustainable growth plan and will help the country improve infrastructure and become better connected regionally and internationally, according to a Lao Economic Daily report on Saturday. The 1,350-metre bridge marks a major step in bilateral cooperation, with 98.4 per cent of construction on the Lao side and all approach roads and immigration facilities completed. The bridge is expected to cut travel time between the two provinces by up to three hours, boosting trade and tourism.
