Speed limits on some Irish rural roads reduced
This change impacts small "rural local roads", with further reductions to other roads to be implemented later in 2025.
Plans include reducing limits on national secondary roads, such as dual carriageways, from 100km/h (62mph) to 80km/h (50mph) and on urban roads from 50km/h (31mph) to 30km/h (18mph).
The plans follow recommendations made in a review commissioned by the Irish government's Department of Transport in 2023.
The policy background says that an increase in fatalities and serious injuries recently has sparked the need for lower speed limits.
The government said statistics show road deaths before 2021 had been falling since 2006, when there were 365 fatalities on the roads
However, following this there were two successive years of increase where fatalities rose from 132 in 2021 to 180 in 2023.
An Garda Síochána (Irish police force) said it would "work with local authorities to ensure these changes are enforced".
"Public-awareness campaigns will be launched to educate drivers about the new limits and the importance of adhering to them," it said.
The police service added that measures to "achieve compliance" include "vehicle-mounted and handheld speed-detection equipment, and safety-camera vans".
Heading south from Newry in County Down, Omeath is the first village south of the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, on the shores of Carlingford Lough.
Many visitors and locals were unaware of the speed limit changes.
On some of the local routes in and out of the village, new signs have been erected with the new 60km/h (37mph) limit.
William Lane, from Dromore in County Down, is a regular visitor to the Cooley Peninsula but says he didn't know about the changes.
"I can understand why," he said as he enjoyed a coffee outside Café Rosa.
"They did employ a 20mph speed limit in Wales. Time will tell."
Aisling O'Hanlon, who owns a hairdressing salon in the village, said many locals were also unaware.
"I didn't know this was happening," she said.
"I don't think people really drive too fast. I think we all stick to the speed limit but that could be a problem now if nobody knows – that's going to be the problem."
Customer Briege Rice said: "They are small roads. They are a bit windy so you couldn't drive fast on them.
"I don't think it will make much of a difference because I think people are genuinely careful."
But across the street in the café at the Grand Central Hotel customers give a different view.
Kathleen Elmore said: "I don't think you could reduce speed limits quickly enough.
"We have a school and a church and there are lights but a lot of people don't honour them.
"There's always someone quicker than you who wants to get here, there, wherever – slow down."
Briege and James Dunne agree.
"I think it's a good idea," said Briege.
"There are people going too fast, everywhere on all the roads we are on. Some will listen but a lot won't."
The Welsh government introduced similar measures in 2023, reducing the default urban speed limit to 20mph.
The latest casualty data for the first year of the new speed limit in Wales showed there were 100 fewer people killed or seriously injured on 20 and 30mph roads, a fall of 28%.
That data has been welcomed by Welsh ministers, but the Welsh conservatives say the policy remains confusing and frustrating for many motorists.
The scheme has proved to be one of the Welsh government's most controversial initiatives since devolution began, and almost half a million people signed a petition calling for it to be scrapped.

Petition calls for tougher action on pavement parking in Bradford
A PETITION has called for tougher action to stop cars parking on Bradford's pavements, and says the issue is 'a major concern on every local street". The e-petition says pavement parking can block people in their homes and force wheelchair users and parents with prams onto the road to try and navigate the obstructions. It is currently live on Bradford Council's website and runs until late November. Pavement parking is a hugely contentious issue in the district, with rows of cars parked outside shops and takeaways a common sight on some streets. Although the Highway Code says vehicles should not park on the pavement, it is not illegal, except in London and Scotland. The Department of Transport held a national consultation on the issue more than five years ago, leading to over 15,000 responses. However, there has yet to be any change to legislation following the consultation. The new petition calls for the Council to bring new local laws in relation to on-street footpath parking and for more frequent Council checks to stop car owners/drivers from parking in a way that causes obstructions to pavements. The petition adds: 'This is a major concern on every local street of Bradford.' It goes on to say that many cars in Bradford 'casually' park on pavements when there is no immediate street parking space. It adds: 'Such nuisance and obstructive parking needs council attention and action for prevention. 'On-street footpath parking causes high risk and hazards for those who also need to get in and out of their gardens and onto a public footpath. 'Lack of space for wheelchairs, prams, pushchairs, and parents with toddlers to walk on footpaths mean they have to go onto roads with cars passing just to get past. 'This causes high risk danger for accident and hazards.' There should be daily parking checks in hot spot areas and new parking regulations introduced – the petition adds. So far, 25 people have signed the petition, which can be found here. If enough people sign the petition, it will be heard at a future meeting of Bradford Council. The issue was discussed at a Bradford Council meeting last year, when Councillor Alex Ross Shaw, executive for regeneration, planning and transport, said pavement parking was 'one of the most frustrating issues to deal with.' But he added: 'We need to differentiate between a careless driver who parks their car entirely on the pavement rather than park 10 yards down the road, and people who live in an area where they have to park partly on the pavement to avoid collisions, and leaves plenty of space for pedestrians.'

It helps to have been integral to the marque's success, both on and off the track, for decades. The French-Saudi billionaire, who passed away in 2021, took an ownership stake in McLaren Racing in 1984. Shortly after this, Ojjeh, who was also the CEO of the TAG Group, financed the development of the TAG-Porsche engine that helped earn McLaren two Formula 1 constructor's championships and three driver's championships. But Ojjeh wasn't just interested in on-track success. Following the 1988 Italian Grand Prix, he got to talking to McLaren's then-CEO Ron Dennis and the legendary Gordon Murray about developing a road car. Anyone familiar with McLaren knows that this would lead to the creation of the F1, the vehicle that established the blueprint for the modern supercar. Ojjeh was so impressed with the results that he set about selling off his collection of cars, which included a number of Ferraris, and began building a new one made up of McLarens. Of course, these aren't just any old McLaren supercars. Each of the vehicles, from a 1998 F1 to a 2023 Elva, is the last example from its production run. They are almost all finished in a dazzling metallic orange originally called 'Yquem,' after the dessert wine, but which would eventually be renamed to 'Mansour Orange.' The supercars are almost as close to brand new as you're going to find anywhere on the secondary market. All but two of the vehicles remain in 'factory-delivered condition' and have been maintained under direct instruction from McLaren. The two that have been driven include the collection's crown jewel, the F1, which has just over 1,100 miles on the odometer, and a P1 GTR that was used exclusively for McLaren-run track days. Are you already imagining a stunning orange McLaren sitting in your garage? Tom Hartley Jnr hasn't said when it'll begin selling Ojjeh's McLarens, but it figures to be soon.
