Hwh-Dhakuria bus ops hit after protest over workers' suspension

Time of India22-07-2025
Kolkata: Around 48 buses plying on routes 37 (Dhakuria-Howrah) and 37A (Sulekha-Howrah) stopped plying on Tuesday 'as a mark of protest after their union alleged that 40 of its workers were suspended by the union chief, local ward 93 (Dhakuria) Trinamool Congress councillor Mousumi Das.
Sources claimed that a part of the services resumed by the evening.
The union claimed that around five of its buses were requisitioned by Das for the Martyrs' Day Rally, but another 27 were requisitioned by other party units. A few tried to operate on the normal routes. The suspended workers said this led to Das reacting angrily and dismissing the staffers.
Das, however, denied all claims. "A couple of people in the union had issues.
I went and resolved them. The buses are running again. This is an internal matter," she said.

Ranjit Sarkar from the bus owners' association said, "Buses have almost stopped running. No buses were on the route after 8.30 am. I spoke to the councillor as soon as she arrived. Then we resumed the bus service. Services will be completely normal from Wednesday." Tapan Banerjee of the Joint Council of Bus Syndicate claimed that such "draconian action was unexpected and uncalled for". "We supply buses to all political parties.
But such an action is stopping us from offering services to the citizens," he added.

LoP Adhikari to hold convention against isolation of RG Kar rape and murder victim's parents

West Bengal Leader of the Opposition (LoP) and senior BJP leader, Suvendu Adhikari, on Sunday, has decided to organise a convention in the neighbourhood of the RG Kar rape and murder victim's parents to sensitise people against the alleged isolation of the elderly couple. The decision from the BJP leader came after learning that parents of the RG Kar victim have been isolated in their neighbourhood by members of the Trinamool Congress. LoP Adhikari alleged that the elderly couple have been isolated because they continue to demand justice for their deceased daughter and called for a "Nabanna Avijan" (March to the State Secretariat) on the anniversary of the RG Kar rape and murder incident. "We have come to know that the ruling party (Trinamool Congress) is behaving in this way towards the parents of the victim. I am in touch with the family. Despite our limited capacity, we are thinking of holding a convention against the injustice that Trinamool is doing to the victim's parents," the LoP said. LoP Adhikari, along with other BJP legislators, will organise these conventions to stand in solidarity with the victim's parents in such tumultous times. A BJP insider said on Sunday that such conventions will be held for two days. "Through this convention, LoP Adhikari wants to reach out to every household in the neighbourhood where the victim's parents live. Preparations have started to organise the event at the earliest. As part of the programme, BJP MLAs will hold meetings as well as conduct door-to-door campaign in the area and highlight the ruling party's treatment of the victim's parents," the party insider added. The BJP MLAs will also visit the markets where they can meet a large number of people. Apart from this, a leaflet mentioning the RG Kar Hospital incident and the role of the ruling Trinamool Congress in the incident will be distributed in the area. The Trinamool Congress, meanwhile, took a dig at LoP Adhikari for planning to hold such convention. Trinamool Congress MLA and party's Chief Whip, Nirmal Ghosh, said, "Our party sympathises with the parents of the deceased doctor. It is not true that we have isolated them. It is true that sometimes they go to the BJP, sometimes to the CPM, sometimes to the Maoists. Since they have lost their daughter, I will not say anything about them. But I think there is no need for any convention as the area is peaceful." The RG Kar rape and murder victim's mother was discharged from the private hospital on Sunday afternoon where she was admitted following her injury during Saturday's "Nabanna Avijan". She had to be hospitalised after she fell ill amid police action against the protesters. The victim's mother alleged that she was beaten up by the policemen after she, along with her husband and other protesters, tried to march towards Nabanna (State Secretariat). The victim's mother and the BJP leaders alleged that in the police action, the sacred conch shell-bangle on her wrist, traditionally believed to be the symbolic representation of married Hindu women, was broken. Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma said that they are examining the footage of the CCTV cameras and video footage to ascertain whether the victim's mother was beaten up or not.

Sukanta Majumdar faces protests from Trinamool workers after launch of Bengal's first AC EMU

Union Minister of State for Education and DoNER, Sukanta Majumdar, on Sunday afternoon, faced protests from a section of Trinamool Congress workers at Dum Dum station after the inauguration of West Bengal's first air-conditioned Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) from there. Sukanta Majumdar, along with Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shantanu Thakur, flagged off the AC local train from Sealdah station and took a ride in it till Dum Dum station. While leaving the Dum Dum station premises, members of the Trinamool Congress' trade union wing, Indian National Trinamool Trade Union Congress (INTTUC) shouted slogans against MoS Majumdar and staged a protest. Sukanta Majumdar, former West Bengal BJP president, alleged that a few of his party members were attacked by the Trinamool's trade union members. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, who were present at the spot, prevented the situation from escalating. MoS Majumdar said that he will take up the matter with the Railway Ministry. "We will submit a written complaint to the police against Trinamool Congress workers. They have assaulted and molested our women workers. I will raise this issue before the Railway Ministry and submit video footage of the incident. These people holding Trinamool Congress flags came here to disrupt today's programme," said Majumdar. The Trinamool workers, however, said it was a spontaneous protest by the common man against the BJP for harassing Bengali migrant workers across the country. "They brought outsiders here. People have registered their protest against them," said local Trinamool leader Abhishek Saha. Manufactured by the Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF), this new AC EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) train has been assigned to the Sealdah Division of Eastern Railway (ER). The first AC local train will operate on the Sealdah-Ranaghat route, completing the journey in 1 hour and 40 minutes. With a top speed of 110 kmph, the train will offer a galloping service, stopping only at key stations. Regular commercial operations will begin from Ranaghat station on Monday. The Sealdah-Ranaghat AC local train features 12 fully air-conditioned coaches with stainless steel bodies, offering a safe, secure, and comfortable travel experience. It can accommodate up to 1,126 seated passengers. During its journey, the train will halt at key stations including Chakdah, Kalyani, Kanchrapara, Naihati, Barrackpore, Khardah, Sodepur, Dumdum, and Bidhannagar. The fare for the Sealdah-Ranaghat AC local train is highly affordable, with a full journey ticket priced at just Rs 120 and the minimum fare starting at Rs 35. Speaking at the inauguration of the AC train, Sukanta Majumdar said Sealdah station should be renamed after Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, former minister and Hindutva activist.

"Mahua Moitra A Waste Of Time": Trinamool MP's Fresh Attack On Colleague

In a fresh embarrassment to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal, Lok Sabha MP Kalyan Banerjee on Saturday called party colleague Mahua Moitra "below standard" and a "waste of time" - remarks that are likely to escalate an ongoing prolonged feud between the two leaders. Mr Kalyan, a four-time Member of Parliament who recently resigned as Trinamool's chief whip in the Lok Sabha amid signs of internal rumblings, also claimed he appeared as the "bad person" to several party colleagues because of Ms Moitra and said she is not worth his time or attention. "The lady (Ms Moitra) is not my subject matter.. She is very below the standard. There is no point discussing her. I have become bad to several people because of her," he told reporters in his constituency Srirampur. "It was a waste of time, I wasted my energy. She doesn't deserve my attention. It was my mistake that I gave her attention," he added. He also thanked a junior advocate who reportedly texted him over the ongoing row between the two Trinamool MPs. "I have a junior advocate brother. He texted me. I was inspired by that and realised that Mahua Moitra is no longer a subject matter for me. I have a lot of work to do now," he said. There was no immediate reaction from Ms Moitra on the remarks at the time of filing this report. Mr Kalyan has had frequent run-ins with Ms Moitra, a Lok Sabha MP from Krishnanagar, causing considerable embarrassment to the party leadership, according to sources. Both of them have accused each other of abusing and having disregard for basic norms of civil discourse. The party leader, however, regretted his statements against party supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. "I have also spoken against didi (Mamata Banerjee). I think it would have been better if I had not said this," Mr Kalyan said. Asked if he spoke to the Chief Minister on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, he said: "Didi blessed me. Not once, but thrice". On July 4, Mr Kalyan resigned as the Trinamool's chief whip in the Lok Sabha, alleging that he was being blamed unfairly for lack of coordination among MPs even as some barely attend Parliament. In an emotional outburst, Mr Kalyan said he was deeply hurt by the party's silence over "insults" hurled at him by a fellow MP, an apparent reference to Ms Mahua. The move came hours after a virtual meeting of Trinamool MPs chaired by Ms Mamata, where she reportedly expressed her displeasure over poor coordination in the party's parliamentary wing. While Mr Kalyan Banerjee claimed he resigned voluntarily, he reportedly told his close associates he was being made a scapegoat, especially after months of tension with Ms Mahua Moitra and earlier, with former cricketer and Trinamool MP Kirti Azad. Mr Kalyan and Ms Moitra went toe-to-toe after the former made alleged offensive comments when asked about the possibility of deployment of police inside schools.
