Gloucestershire's Joe Phillips hit his maiden first class century as the rain-ruined County Championship Division Two match with Middlesex ended in an inevitable draw.After the third day washout, a still wet outfield prevented any play until 13:25 BST, with a minimum of 68 overs left in the game.Resuming their first innings on 54-1, a deficit of 391, Gloucestershire extended it to 400-9 by stumps, 21-year-old Cornishman Phillips making 136 from 182 balls, with 19 fours.Miles Hammond contributed an attractive 71 and Cameron Bancroft 58. But there had been too little time on a placid pitch for the teams to conjure a decisive outcome and both had to settle for 15 points.Following an early lunch at 12:45, Phillips and skipper Bancroft played confidently on a pitch still proving surprisingly straightforward to bat on considering it was shaved at both ends.Unbeaten on 11 at the start, Phillips had a scare on 34 when advancing down the pitch to off-spinner Josh De Caires and edging between wicketkeeper and first slip for four. It was a rare moment of anxiety for Gloucestershire as Bancroft was first to his half-century, off 104 balls, with nine fours.The experienced Aussie was looking in prime form and it was a surprise when, with the total advanced to 126, he was bowled off a bottom edge aiming to pull a boundary off left-arm seamer Noah Cornwell.By then Phillips was treating the sparse crowd to a range of sweetly-timed strokes off front and back foot, a single to deep cover off Luke Hollman's leg-spin taking him to fifty off 92 deliveries, with five fours. Two more boundaries followed from fierce pull shots in the same Cornwell over.Ollie Price was soon looking equally at home on the two-tone coloured surface. A glorious square drive for four off Ryan Higgins took Truro-born Phillips past his previous best first class score of 80, made on the same ground against Worcestershire in 2023.By tea, he had moved to 96 and, with Price unbeaten on 33, Gloucestershire were 209-2, still trailing by 236. A looping full toss from Sam Robson gave Phillips the chance to strike the boundary that brought up his century off 145 balls. It was his 15th four and he raised a clenched fist in the air to celebrate.Price departed soon afterwards for 34, caught behind top-edging a sweep off Robson's leg-breaks. The dismissal meant a first bowling point for Middlesex on a day their promotion hopes suffered a damaging blow with Glamorgan's victory over Lancashire.Phillips and Hammond took Gloucestershire to 250 and a batting point. With more bonus points up for grabs, neither team wanted to shake hands on the draw.Using his feet well to attack the spinners, Phillips continued on his merry way, while Hammond also went on the attack at every opportunity. Their entertaining stand of 66 in 12.1 overs ended when Phillips holed out to long-on off Higgins.Cheltenham-born Hammond, who often flourishes at the Festival, advanced to smack a straight six off Des Caires as Gloucestershire progressed to a second batting point, losing James Bracey cheaply, caught at mid-on off Des Caires with the total on 299.Hollman earned Middlesex a second bowling point when having Graeme van Buuren caught at slip. But Hammond moved to a fluent half-century off 63 balls before Zaman Akhter was seventh man out, caught at backward square leg sweeping a ball from Hollman with eight overs remaining.A Hammond six off Hollman took Gloucestershire to a third batting point before he fell aiming to clear long-on off Higgins. With three overs remaining, Middlesex took the second new ball and Cornwell had Matt Taylor caught behind to give his side maximum bowling points.There was still time for a Josh Shaw six off Higgins as he and Todd Murphy helped the hosts reach 400 in the very last over. They know that and we inspire each other by playing through things like that and it got us to the end in the end.' Malcolm Marshall During the West Indies tour of England in 1984, Marshall broke his hand. The West Indies bowler sustained a double fracture to his left thumb at Headingley and remarkably managed to bat one-handed, hitting a boundary while helping Larry Gomes reach a century. Marshall then went on to impress in the second innings, where – with a plastercast on his left hand – he took seven wickets for 53 runs to reduce England to 159 all out and the West Indies went on to win the Test. Only days after helping City lift the trophy, X-rays revealed that the goalkeeper had actually broken his neck during the game. Tiger Woods Woods produced a battling performance at the 2008 US Open, where he won his 14th major in visible pain. The-then world number one had undergone surgery on his left knee two days after finishing second in the Masters in April. Woods was limping at times during the tournament, but managed to force a play-off with a birdie putt on the 18th hole and made another birdie in the play-off, winning on the 91st hole. Days after winning, Woods announced he would undergo reconstructive surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and have time to rehabilitate a fracture of the left tibia in his leg.

That was in six Tests, making this a record for a five-match series. 21 The 21 total centuries, rounded off by Harry Brook and Joe Root on Sunday, equals the all-time record set in the 1955 Australia v West Indies series. 6 India's six-run win in the final match is their narrowest margin by runs in the 183 Tests they have won, the previous lowest being 13 runs over Australia in Mumbai in November 2004. 5 All five matches went to the fifth day, the first time that has been true of a five-Test series since the 2017-18 Ashes in Australia – won 4-0 by the hosts. 754 India captain Shubman Gill top-scored with 754 runs in the series, with four centuries and an average of 75.40. Ravindra Jadeja averaged 86.00 while Joe Root led the way for England with 537 runs at 67.12. 13,453 Root's efforts took him up to second on the all-time list of Test run-scorers, ending the series on 13,453 for his career and trailing only Sachin Tendulkar's 15,921 for India. Root also reached a record 213 Test catches. 23 Mohammed Siraj led all bowlers with 23 wickets, including the series-tying dismissal of Gus Atkinson. RAHEEM STERLING heads a list of NINE Chelsea players who are out of the first-team picture - literally. The former England international, 30, and eight other stars do not even have a profile or photo in the first-team section of the Blues' official website. 4 4 The clock is ticking for Chelsea to find new homes for unwanted players after Sterling and others were joined on Monday by players returning after time off following the Club World Cup. The Blues have been on another big spending spree this summer, with £60million Joao Pedro among a number of signings that have swollen the current first-team squad to an incredible 47 players. Stamford Bridge chiefs are close to selling striker Armando Broja and midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu - two of the players who do not appear on the website - to Burnley. But in addition to Academy graduates Broja and Alfie Gilchrist, there are seven players including Ugochukwu who cost Chelsea a combined total of more than £200m who have no profile on the website - despite still officially being at the club. Even among the 31 players who ARE listed as first-teamers by Chelsea, there are big names like Christopher Nkunku who could yet find themselves leaving before the transfer window closes on September 1. Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk, who is facing a ban for failings a drugs test, DOES still have a profile pic - albeit wearing last season's kit. Add in the six players already sent out on loan, and the Blues have a huge number of players - and agents - to juggle. Sterling, signed from Manchester City for £47.5m in 2022, and fellow former England star Ben Chilwell, a £50m arrival from Leicester in 2020, have been frozen out for more than a year. Sterling sealed an 11th-hour loan move to Arsenal last summer. Chilwell and Axel Disasi, a £38m signing from Monaco in 2023, spent the second half of the season on temporary deals at Crystal Palace and Aston Villa respectively. The same applies to forgotten Ivorian forward David Datro Fofana. 4 The £10.5m signing from Molde in January 2023 returned early from a loan at Turkish club Goztepe last season after suffering a significant injury. DDF has been back training for a while but is another player on his way out at Chelsea. Club bosses have plenty to do to make sure Maresca has a squad of a manageable size. Former Blues boss Graham Potter revealed he had so many players at one point that some of them had to sit on the floor for team meetings.
