Bengal mourns death of poet Daud Haider

Hindustan Times28-04-2025

Kolkata, The literary circle in Kolkata on Monday mourned the death of Daud Haider, an exiled Bangladeshi poet, in Berlin and said his poems reflected anger and rebellion.
He lived in India for 13 years before leaving for Germany where he died at the age of 73.
Sahitya Akademy Award-winning Bengali poet Subodh Sarkar told PTI that Haider's poems reflected anger and rebellion and the one for which he was expelled had a controversial line.
He was exiled by the Sheikh Mujibur Rehman government in 1974 after the poem criticising radicalism and bigotry in the country was published in a Bengali daily.
Haider's settling in Berlin was facilitated by Nobel laureate writer Gunter Grass at a time he was not sure about his future moves, Sarkar said adding that lately, his works resonated with a yearning to come back to his roots, his motherland Bangladesh.
Sarkar said he and Haider were in touch and used to make long-distance phone calls from Germany and talk to him for 30-40 minutes.
Recalling Haider's visit to Kolkata during the late '80s, Sarkar said, "We met at the residence of poet Sunil Gangopadhyay several times."
He recalled after living in India for several years, Haider's life took another turn as he headed to Germany and spent 35 years of his life there.
Haider died in Berlin on Saturday and his family and friends confirmed it the next day.
Condoling the death, another Sahitya Akademi-winning poet Joy Goswami said, "Haider was among the foremost poets in Bengali literature belonging to the league of Annada Sankar Roy, Aloke Ranjan Das Gupta and Shakti Chattopadhyay. His demise will certainly create a void."
Goswami recalled as a young poet associated with 'Desh', a prominent Bengali literary magazine, in his earlier years, he used to see Haider chatting with litterateurs like Sunil Gangopadhyay and Shakti Chattopadhyay but did not have much interaction with him on personal front then.
His poems left an indelible mark in the minds of readers, Goswami said.
Born on February 21, 1952, in Pabna district in erstwhile East Pakistan, currently Bangladesh, Haider served as the literary editor of the daily newspaper Sangbad in the early 1970s.

The actress once again had a run-in with the paparazzi, this time at a somber family gathering. On Tuesday, Jaya attended the prayer meet of late filmmaker Rono Mukherjee at their family residence in Mumbai. The occasion brought together several members of Bollywood's most respected film families who gathered to pay their respects. The atmosphere at the meet remained somber until an unexpected moment unfolded as Jaya Bachchan was leaving the venue with her daughter, Shweta Bachchan Nanda. In a sarcastic tone, she said, 'Chaliye… aap log bhi aaiye sath me… aa jaiye. Bakwas sab," expressing her displeasure at the lack of privacy. This fiery exchange quickly went viral, sparking a debate. While some criticised her for being harsh, others defended her stance, citing the need for personal space during moments of grief. 'But she is right, funeral prayer is no place to click a photo. And she comes from a generation that takes this thing seriously. Even my mother would have reacted the same, so why is she wrong?" read a comment. Another said, 'I have never seen a more angry person than Jaya." 'She has so much attitude," said a user. Virat Kohli's special message for Rajat Patidar: ‘Injury replacement to IPL-winning captain'; gifts bat as souvenir

Rajat Patidar was destined to lift the Indian Premier League (IPL) title. Coming into Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in 2021, Patidar couldn't do much before being subsequently released. Unsold at the 2022 auction, Patidar was brought into the side as an injury replacement for Luvnith Sisodia. Patidar's century against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the playoffs proved to be the turning point of his career. The Madhya Pradesh batter was retained ahead of 2023 season, but missed the due to Achilles Heel injury. With 395 runs from 13 innings in IPL 2024 and Faf du Plessis leaving the franchise, Patidar was named as the captain for 2025 season. With former captain Virat Kohli behind him, Patidar was spot on in his leadership as RCB dominated throughout the IPL 2025 to finish in the top two after the league stage - first time after 2016. Kohli didn't forget to make a special mention for Patidar. In a video released by RCB on their social media handles, Kohli was spotted entering the dressing room with former teammate AB de Villiers by his side. Upon entering the dressing room, Kohli spotted Patidar, sitting quietly - possibly recalling his journey in the last few years. "What a turnaround," came words from Kohli's mouth pointing at Patidar. "Injury replacement to IPL-winning captain, bloody hell, that's a turnaround," added Kohli. Kohli also gave Patidar one of his bats which the RCB skipper accepted with a kiss on the willow. Following the win, Kohli was time and again mentioned he want to celebrate the trophy with the fans. With De Villiers and Chris Gayle by his side, Kohli urged the duo to join in the celebrations in Bengaluru. "I hope these two are coming to Bengaluru tomorrow with us. It's going to be something special," he said. Kohli's short message sent the fans into frenzy as minutes later host broadcaster Star Sports confirmed that they would be covering celebrations. A victory parade is on cards although the exact itinerary is yet to be announced. Stay updated on all the action from the IPL 2025.
