Glasgow sex attacker guilty of raping woman he met on Tinder

Glasgow Timesa day ago

Rian Hood put the victim through a horror ordeal during a campaign of abuse at his hands.
The 34-year-old ex-clothes shop supervisor denied being physically or sexually violent, even claiming in a bizarre video clip that the woman had instead hurt him.
Hood was found guilty of rape and engaging in a course of abusive behaviour following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow.

He is already serving a seven-and-a-half-year jail term imposed in 2022 for preying on four other women.
Hood was due to be sentenced for this latest crime as he returned to the dock this week.
But, Judge Lord Colbeck continued the case again for a full risk assessment to be carried out on the sex attacker.
This could eventually lead to an Order for the Lifelong Restriction being imposed on him.
Hood is scheduled to be back in court in September.

Hood, formerly of the city's Knightswood, told jurors how he was initially in contact with the woman via Tinder.
He stated he had never used the dating app before, as "you hear all these horror stories".
It was not until early 2020 that the pair physically met.
He had been aware at the time of allegations made by one of the victims in the later 2022 trial.
Hood claimed he told the woman in this latest case about the then accusations.
He said there was "not much reaction" from her.

Hood went on to move in with the woman and her mother at their home in the west of the city during one of the COVID lockdowns in 2020.
He said: "It was a bit intense, but we managed it well."
Hood insisted there was "seldom" any sexual contact between him and the victim while there.
The woman, however, told how he stood on her face and then forced himself upon her during one attack.
Denying it happened, Hood claimed: "We would not really do much in her mum's house as it was just awkward."
The abuse also took place at other flats in the north of Glasgow.
His lawyer Frances Connor put to him at one stage: "Any truth that you wanted cocaine so you could have sex for hours and hours?"
He refuted this, insisting the drug would have had the "opposite effect" on him.
Miss Connor also asked if anything had occurred without the woman's consent.
Hood again denied this.
The lawyer went on: "Anything ever happened when she was asleep?"
He then claimed: "No, I would never have woken her up as she was a grouch if you did."
Hood added that any evidence of him "choking" the woman only happened during consensual sex.
The attacker was also physically abusive, which had included a claim he had hurled Chinese spring rolls at her.
He instead alleged the woman had previously "erupted" at him after confronting him about cheating on her.
Jurors were shown a mobile phone clip recorded by the woman where a drunk and topless Hood claimed he could not walk as she had "broke" his toe by allegedly throwing a towel at him.

In the previous trial, Hood had been convicted of 10 charges of similar abuse against four women between 2010 and 2020.
His lawyer said at the time how his life had been "somewhat blighted by a gambling addiction" which had affected his relationships.
He first faced allegations involving the latest victim in 2023 while serving the seven and a half year sentence.

'Urban hunter' jailed for raping two girls and abusing two women

An 'urban hunter' who subjected three children to a series of sexual assaults over a four-year period has been jailed for seven years. Brandon Robb, 28, attacked two girls and a young boy at locations in Fife between May 2011 and May 2015. The High Court in Edinburgh also heard how Robb acted in a threatening and abusive manner to two women in incidents which took place between November 2019 and February 2023. Robb, who has previous convictions for sexual offences, was brought to justice after his victims contacted police. Jurors heard how Robb raped his first victim on an occasion in 2011 when she was just eight years old after leading her to a secluded area. On various occasions between December 2012 and August 2014, Robb repeatedly raped the victim – a 12-year-old girl and subjected the child to a series of sexual assaults. In May 2015, Robb sexually assaulted a 12-year-old boy in the town. The court heard how his offending continued. In August 2020, he began abusing another woman, and he continued to do so until February 2023. Robb repeatedly shouted and swore at the woman, seizing her by the neck and compressing her breathing, and repeatedly punching her on the body. He also head butted her. Between November 2019 and May 31, 2020, he seized another woman on the body, sent her a threatening video, and attempted to contact her by phone and by social media. Robb gave evidence in which he denied any wrongdoing but Judge Lord Lake remanded him in custody after jurors returned guilty verdicts on six charges. Sentence was deferred for the court to obtain a report on whether Robb met the criteria for an order of lifelong restriction – an effective life sentence in which criminals are only released from custody once the parole board is satisfied they no longer pose a threat to public safety. On Monday, Judge Lord Lake concluded that Robb didn't meet the criteria needed to impose an OLR. He decided to pass a seven-year custodial term and told Robb he'd be supervised by the authorities for seven years following his release from custody. He added: 'It is clear that your victims have suffered greatly. 'The effects on them have been long-lasting and have been experienced over many years.' Robb previously posted pictures of himself and his dog hunting deer in the Scottish countryside on social media. He was jailed in 2014 after admitting to using his pet dog to hunt and kill a rare piebald deer. A court heard how he lived a 'feral existence' and was an 'urban hunter'. He killed the piebald while awaiting sentencing for stealing 30 ducks from a farm in Fife. Following the conviction, prosecutor Margaret Barron revealed that Robb had 21 previous convictions and had served time in prison. The court heard that these convictions were for 'analogous matters' and that he had been placed on the Sex Offenders Register following previous proceedings. On Monday, defence advocate Richard Goddard KC told Lord Lake that his client had a 'chaotic' childhood, and this affected him as he became an adult. Mr Goddard added: 'He had a lack of any kind of moral framework or any assistance with his upbringing. 'He did not have any kind of moral guidance at all.' Lord Lake also placed Robb on the Sex Offenders Register for life. Congo gold miner says M23 rebels force staff to work without pay

June 30 (Reuters) - Gold miner Twangiza Mining SA has accused Rwanda-backed M23 rebels of forcing its employees to work against their will and without pay after seizing its mine in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. M23 staged a lightning advance earlier this year in eastern Congo, taking control of more land than ever before in North and South Kivu provinces. The Twangiza Mining site is located in South Kivu province. In May, the company said it had been ordered to suspend operations at the mine after M23 accused it of not paying taxes. In a new statement dated Friday, Twangiza Mining, which is headquartered in Congo and describes itself as a Chinese firm, said its workers were being "held in captivity, forced to work in inhuman conditions, without any security measure, remuneration or medical coverage." Reuters could not independently verify the company's assertions. M23 and Congo's government did not respond to requests for comment. The statement from Twangiza Mining also said production had been "paralyzed" and that the site was "entirely controlled" by a group of Rwandan nationals who, working with M23 and claiming to be new investors, have been exploiting the mine "for their own profit by treating our employees like slaves deprived of all protection". Congo, the United Nations and Western powers say Rwanda is supporting M23 by sending troops and arms. Rwanda has long denied helping M23, saying its forces were acting in self-defence against Congo's army and ethnic Hutu militiamen linked to the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Yolande Makolo, Rwanda government spokesperson, said on Monday that Rwanda had nothing to do with the dispute with Twangiza Mining. "Rwanda is not involved in this situation, and the accusations against Rwandan citizens are without basis - there is no record or information of any Rwanda citizens involved in such activities," Makolo said. "This is a local issue that should be taken up with the authorities in the area." On Friday, the foreign ministers of Rwanda and Congo signed a U.S.-brokered peace deal, raising hopes for an end to fighting that has killed thousands and displaced hundreds of thousands more so far this year. U.S. President Donald Trump's administration aims to attract billions of dollars in Western investment to Congo, which is rich in tantalum, gold, cobalt, copper and lithium. Qatar has been hosting talks between Congo and M23.
