Son Heung-min targeting ‘fresh challenge' as he announces Tottenham departure
It ended a 17-year trophy drought for the club and South Korea captain Son explained his decision to target a 'fresh challenge' during a press conference in his home country ahead of Tottenham's pre-season friendly with Newcastle on Sunday.
After Spurs arrived in Seoul on Friday, Son – following a remarkable 454 appearances and 173 goals for the north London club – confirmed his desire to depart this summer, with MLS outfit Los Angeles FC leading the race for his signature, the PA news agency understands.
Heung-Min Son has announced his intention to leave the Club at a press conference alongside Thomas Frank in Seoul.

Son told a press conference: 'Before we start, I wanted to say I have decided to leave the club this summer.
'Respectfully, the club is helping me with this decision.
'It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career, such amazing memories. It was so hard to make this decision.
He continued: 'I need a new environment to push myself. I need a little bit of change – 10 years is a long time.
'I came to north London as a kid, 23-years-old, such a young age. I leave the club as a grown man, a very proud man.
'I want to say thanks to all the Spurs fans for giving me so much love. I hope the goodbye is also good timing and this is the right time to make that decision. I hope everyone can accept and respect that.'
New Tottenham head coach Frank confirmed Son would start and be captain in Sunday's friendly with Newcastle at Seoul's World Cup Stadium.
It could be Son's final appearance for Spurs, despite the UEFA Super Cup fixture with Paris St Germain in Udine on the horizon on August 13.
Frank said: 'It's very clear that Sonny will start and lead the team out as captain. If that is the last game for Sonny, what a place to do it here in front of his home fans. It could be a beautiful ending.'
Son joined Tottenham in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen and after a tricky debut campaign, he quickly became a fan favourite and subsequently a modern-day Premier League great due to his consistency and personality, clinching the golden boot award in the 2022-23 season, but he is now set to exit after 10 years in north London.

Maresca has previously said he expects players to be able to play in a number of roles and wants at least two players for each position. Nominally a winger, Estevao is likely to be deployed across Chelsea's attacking line. 'He can play everywhere,' said Maresca. 'He's so good. For me, he's like Cole (Palmer), in terms of – careful – he is like Cole in terms of his position. 'He can play outside, he can play inside, he can play everywhere. Liverpool will not be held to ransom in pursuit of Alexander Isak
Liverpool will not be held to ransom in their pursuit of Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. The PA news agency understands the Premier League champions remain keen on the 25-year-old Sweden international, who was made to train by himself on Tyneside on Wednesday after missing the Magpies' pre-season trip to Singapore and South Korea amid speculation over his future. However, as they await completion of Darwin Nunez's proposed 53million euros – around £46.3million – plus bonuses move to Saudi club Al Hilal, sources on Merseyside indicated they would not enter a bidding war as they sought a replacement. Liverpool's admiration of Isak, who scored what proved to be the winning goal against them in last season's Carabao Cup final at Wembley, is well known and they have already tabled a bid of around £110m, which was swiftly rejected. Newcastle have repeatedly insisted the Swede, for whom they paid Real Sociedad £63m during the summer of 2022, is simply not for sale and with three years remaining on his existing contract, they hold a strong position in one sense. However Isak, who signalled his intention to explore his options during the current transfer window, has so far resisted all overtures to sign a new, long-term deal at St James' Park and that appears to have encouraged the Anfield club that they may be able to prise him from head coach Eddie Howe's grasp. That said, the Reds are understood to have drawn up a series of criteria which will govern their pursuit of the former AIK Solna and Borussia Dortmund forward, or indeed alternative targets. Among them are an insistence that any replacement must be of the required quality, must represent fair market value and perhaps most importantly, must be realistically attainable. In that context, Newcastle's asking price of £150m – which was designed to ward off potential suitors – would seem a significant obstacle, as would their long-held stance on his availability, although there is little doubt that he would meet the quality requirement having scored 27 goals in all competitions last season. In addition, the Magpies' interest in RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko looks unlikely to come to fruition with Manchester United confident they are in the driving seat, complicating the search for a credible replacement with Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson having being touted as an option. Newcastle were already in the market for a striker following Callum Wilson's departure at the end of last season, but plugging the gap left by a man around whom Howe would ideally want to build his team, during a summer which has already proved intensely difficult, would be both difficult and expensive. The alternative is to persuade Isak that his future remains at St James' at least in the short term – there is little doubt that his head has been turned – and that is a task which would take all his manager's estimable powers. It remains to be seen whether or not Liverpool will increase their offer for the player if and when the Nunez deal is finalised. They will bank a significant proportion of the 75m euros – around £65.4m – plus bonuses they paid Benfica for the 26-year-old Uruguay international in June 2022, having rebuffed advances from Saudi Arabia in January and Napoli, who are understood not to have met the club's valuation and to have wanted to pay the fee over five years, this summer.

Tottenham's transfer stance on five targets as deals eyed to replace injured James Maddison
Tottenham want to sign a new No.10 for Thomas Frank after James Maddison suffered a ruptured ACL while on the club's pre-season tour of South Korea Tottenham have confirmed James Maddison has ruptured his ACL and will be forced to undergo surgery. The attacking midfielder suffered the injury in Sunday's 1-1 friendly draw with Newcastle in Seoul and was stretchered off. Scans have now confirmed the 28-year-old's season is now all but over as he prepares to go under the knife and begin his long road to recovery. Maddison missed May's Europa League final triumph over Manchester United with a separate knee issue after straining his MCL. Spurs had already been eyeing a new No.10 for Thomas Frank but their search for attacking reinforcements will now intensify. Last month, Tottenham communicated they were ready to trigger a confidential £60million buy-out clause in Morgan Gibbs-White's Nottingham Forest contract. However, the transfer fell through after Forest declared they were considering legal action against Spurs and the England international has since penned fresh terms. Dejan Kulusevski is also expected to miss the first month of the new season after undergoing patella surgery in May. Leicester City's Bilal El Khannouss, who netted in a 2-1 win at Spurs in January, is among a list of alternative names being monitored. Aston Villa, Sunderland and Leeds have also made enquiries for the 21-year-old Moroccan. Meanwhile, Harvey Elliott has also been tracked but he is valued at an estimated £45m by Liverpool after he was named Player of the Tournament at the U21 Euros as England defended the trophy in Slovakia. Elliott is currently the subject of talks with RB Leipzig and is viewed as their top target to replace Chelsea-bound Xavi Simons. Liverpool are understood to have indicated their interest in including a buy-back clause, too. Villa's Jacob Ramsey has also previously attracted admirers at Tottenham but does not appear to be an active target. Monaco's Maghnes Akliouche has been scouted, though primarily featured as a right winger last season. Interest in Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze cooled earlier this summer and it remains to be seen if that's reignited. So far, there is no substance to links to Real Madrid's Rodrygo, either. Fabio Paratici, who has a network of contacts across Europe, is poised to be involved in recruitment discussions as he continues to work for Spurs on a consultancy basis. Brentford's Yoane Wissa remains a player of interest and he wants to leave west London but the Bees are determined to play hardball over a fee after rejecting two bids from Newcastle. Tottenham looked into signing Wissa in January but were told it wasn't possible, they remain attentive to his situation but there is recognition his best position is operating as a centre-forward, where Spurs are already well-stocked with Dominic Solanke and Richarlison. There is also an openness to recruiting a new senior centre-back providing Luka Vuskovic is sent on loan. As reported by Mirror Football in mid-June, Hamburg are interested in the Croatian and have now held initial talks over a potential deal. Brighton's Jan Paul van Hecke and Bournemouth's Illia Zabarnyi, wanted by PSG, are appreciated but would both cost premium fees. Tottenham are reluctant to put a timeframe on Maddison's return and are in the process of finalising young winger Yang Min-hyeok's loan switch to Portsmouth. Fellow attacker Bryan Gil has also been offered to a number of Italian and Spanish clubs via intermediaries including Bologna.
