Co-op boss apologises after retailer hit by ‘highly sophisticated' hackers
The boss of the Co-op has apologised to customers after 'highly sophisticated' hackers attacked the retailer's IT systems.
The Manchester-based co-operative is among a number of retailers, including Marks & Spencer and Harrods, to have been hit by hacks on their IT systems in recent weeks.
Shirine Khoury-Haq, chief executive of the Co-operative Group, told customers in an email on Tuesday afternoon that the business is still 'experiencing significant disruption' because of the cyber attack.
She said: 'Actively managing the severity of the attack has meant shutting down some of our systems to protect the organisation.
'As previously communicated, we have established that the cyber criminals were able to access a limited amount of member data.
'This is obviously extremely distressing for our colleagues and members, and I am very sorry this happened.'
Ms Khoury-Haq said the company is 'working tirelessly' to protect the business, understand the extent of the hack and provide information to relevant authorities.
It came after the Co-op was unable to take card payments in some of its stores and shoppers faced empty shelves because of the continued fallout.
Customers reported on Tuesday that three stores in Manchester had signs indicating that they were 'cash only' as their card machines were offline.
It is understood that contactless payments have also been affected in a small number of stores, with the group working to get normal systems restored.
Your store may be experiencing some product availability issues, please bear with us while we work hard on fixing some technical problems we are experiencing.
We are continuing to serve our members and customers to the best of our ability, and we are sorry if this means you…

The vast majority of the retailer's 2,300 shops are still taking usual forms of payment.
It comes as shoppers have also highlighted empty shelves in some stores, alongside signage indicating that availability has been affected by the cyber attack.
A Co-op spokesman said: 'This means that some of our stores might not have all of their usual products available and we would like to say sorry to our members and customers if this is the case in their local store.
'We are working around the clock to reduce disruption and resume deliveries.
'We would like to thank our colleagues, members, customers and suppliers for their understanding during this time.'
Last week, the Co-op apologised that hackers extracted members' personal data such as names and contact details.
It said it had to shut down parts of its IT systems after experiencing 'sustained malicious attempts' to access its systems.
Meanwhile, rival Marks & Spencer (M&S) is continuing to deal with disruption caused by its own recent cyber incident, after first witnessing issues two weeks ago.
The firm has reportedly been unable to offer some meal deal offers in some of its stores after products availability was impacted.
An M&S spokesman said: 'Customers can still buy meal deals in our rail station stores but there are pockets of availability for some items.

Gangland thug flees to Spain amid fears of being targeted in another underworld hit
Sean "Lugs" McGovern, sworn enemy of Edinburgh crime boss Mark Richardson, has fled to Spain. Gangland thug Sean 'Lugs' McGovern has fled to the Costa Del Sol amid fears of being targeted in another underworld hit. McGovern, 41, quit for a fresh start in Spain after recently being released from jail. Sources claim he was even hanging out with hood Ross Monaghan before he was fatally gunned down last month alongside Eddie Lyons Jnr. Drug dealer McGovern is a sworn enemy of Edinburgh crime boss Mark Richardson and was brutally slashed by his gang during a home visit in 2016. A source said: 'Lugs couldn't be bothered with all the hassle in Edinburgh and didn't want to be constantly looking over his shoulder. 'After being slashed a few years back, he knows Richardson doesn't mess about. His son is being brought up by Richardson's brother, so the issues will never go away. 'He's gone to Spain and is making contacts over there. After spending the best part of 16 years inside, he's enjoying freedom in the sunshine. He was even spotted hanging about with Monaghan before he was killed. They enjoyed a mutual hatred of Richardson, so it's no surprise they became pals.' In a recent snap, McGovern is seen enjoying a beer with his gang of cronies in an Irish bar. In 2016, he was targeted in the slashing in Edinburgh city centre while about to return to prison after home leave. Two hitmen set upon him with blades – witnessed by a Daily Record reporter and photographer – before fleeing in a Skoda. One of Richardson's chief lieutenants was later jailed for six years for his role in the ambush. McGovern spent nine days on the run after fleeing from an open jail almost two years ago. A description issued by police included details of the scar left on his face after the 2016 attack. He was caged for 16 years in 2009 after admitting heroin dealing and a gun attack on an Edinburgh pub. After early release in 2018, he was ordered to do 80 hours of unpaid work for spitting on a prison guard. He was then hauled back to jail after smashing up his phone as police looked on. Richardson, 38, is at the centre of an ongoing gangland feud with Dubai-based Mr Big, Ross McGill. It has led to multiple firebombings and violent attacks in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Sydney toll road relief rebates: Here's how to claim back your cash
In news that should come as no surprise to savvy motorists who make regular journeys across Sydney's many toll roads, since January 1 2024, toll fees in NSW have been capped at $60 per week. Keen to cash in on your toll rebate for the last quarter? You'll need to claim before Monday June 30. Since the $60 toll cap was introduced in January 2024, more than $139 million has been distributed. A further $130 million, covering the period from January 1, 2024 to March 30, 2025, remains unclaimed. The toll cap was introduced to make Sydney's toll system fairer for drivers in the city's west where the majority of the city's more expensive toll roads are located. The Sydneysiders set to benefit most from the rebate scheme are those based in Blacktown, Baulkham Hills, Auburn and Merrylands, with Western Sydney suburbs dominating the list of eligible claimants. According to Transport for NSW, 6,392 drivers based in Blacktown have already claimed back their rebate, with Blacktown-based drivers receiving an average rebate of $358 for the most recent quarter.'These are the parts of Western Sydney where paying a toll is not a choice and in many cases relying on public transport is not a viable choice either,' explained Minister for Transport John Graham. From now until June 30, account holders can begin to reap the benefits of the toll cap, with $130 million waiting to be claimed. To be eligible for a rebate, account holders must be a NSW resident, hold a personal toll account, and spend more than $60 per week on tolls using their personal licence plate for eligible personal trips. If you meet those requirements, logging on to your MyGov account could bring you a little mid-week boost, with rebates of more than $330 available in certain suburbs. When last quarter's rebates were issued, Transport for NSW estimated that drivers who spend on average $200 per week on tolls should receive approximately $7,280 in rebates each year – so if you haven't already, it's worth taking a minute or two to set up your account and start claiming back your journey fees. You can learn more about the journeys included in the toll cap scheme, and how you can register and process your rebates over here, and you can learn more about the upcoming toll increase on the Harbour Bridge over here.

thanked Manchester 'for the jail' as he took to the stage in the city on Sunday, one month after being arrested there over an alleged nightclub bottle attack. The rapper, 36, who was released on £5M bail and due in court on Friday, appeared in great spirits despite his legal woes as he made the cheeky quip during the latest stop of his Breezy Bowl XX tour at the Co-Op Live Arena. Chris showcased his muscular arms in a black vest as he told the crowd: 'I just want to tell you all, I love you all to death, I am so thankful that I could come out here tonight'. 'Thank you all for having me and supporting me and thank you to the jail, y'all was really nice!' he said while flashing a smile. The hitmaker was was charged with causing grievous bodily harm to music producer Abe Diaw during the alleged assault at the Tape club in Mayfair in February 2023 Shortly after Chris was released on remand from prison last month, he posted a story to Instagram to tell his 144million followers: 'From the cage to the stage!!!', adding the the name of his tour. His passport was held by lawyers and police until he needed it in an arrangement that will allow him to fulfil tour dates in Europe, the US and Canada, a court heard. The conditions of his bail mean that he must reside at an address in the UK and can only access his passport when he needed to travel for a tour date, Heidi Stonecliffe KC, prosecuting, said. Stonecliffe told Southwark Crown Court his passport would be held by the police until his international dates, then it would be collected by a solicitor from law firm Hickman & Rose, before being returned to Chris so he can travel to the US. 'The passport is to then be lodged with a US lawyer named Mr Matthew Cayman. We have checked his details and he does exist,' Ms Stonecliffe said. 'It will be held by Mr Cayman until August. Then Mr Brown travels to Canada. It will be held by Mr Cayman during his US tour then Mr Brown returns to the UK and his passport will then be held by a solicitor. 'What we then propose is that we have a further case management hearing on October 24.' Other bail conditions include not to attend the Tape nightclub or contact his co-accused, Dallas rapper Omolulu Akinlolu, 38, the complainant or any witnesses. Before agreeing to the conditions, judge Tony Baumgartner said he needed some more information about Chris's net worth. 'The one concern I have is the defendant leaving the jurisdiction then returning to the jurisdiction,' he said. 'What I don't have is any feel for the defendant's net worth and how the security stands against that. 'It might be a lot of money to him or not a lot of money to him.' Sallie Bennett-Jenkins KC, said that during a break in proceedings she had been 'waking up a lot of people across the west coast of America' to establish Brown's net worth. Brown is claimed to have injured music producer Mr Diaw in an unprovoked attack when the singer and his entourage were at a club night called 'Dirty Martini'. The producer previously alleged Chris hit him over the head with a bottle two or three times and then punched and kicked him as he lay on the floor. Prosecutor Hannah Nicholls previously told Manchester Magistrates' Court the incident was an 'extremely serious' attack that was caught on CCTV. She said Mr Diaw was 'struck with a bottle several times' and 'punched and kicked repeatedly'. Before the latest hearing, Adele Kelly, deputy chief crown prosecutor for CPS London North, said: 'We have authorised the Metropolitan Police to charge Chris Brown with one count of grievous bodily harm, contrary to section 18 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861. 'The alleged incident occurred in London on February 19, 2023. He will have his first court appearance on Friday, May 16 at Manchester Magistrates' Court. 'The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against this defendant are active and that he has the right to a fair trial. 'It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.'
