#SHOWBIZ: Syed Saddiq pledges all modelling earnings to Muar constituents

KUALA LUMPUR: Muar Member of Parliament Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has reaffirmed his commitment to donating every single penny earned from his work as a model or campaign ambassador directly to support the welfare of his constituents.
In a news report yesterday, the 32-year-old politician shared that he carefully reviews every offer he receives, especially contracts involving collaborations with various parties.
"Every single sen earned through these contracts is channelled entirely towards the welfare of the Muar community," he said in the report.
"Whatever the endeavour, I undertake this with a clear intention, and that is for the people's well-being. That's my main focus."
He added that when deals are secured through agencies, there are often restrictions, such as being unable to publicly disclose that all proceeds go to Muar, though the aid still reaches his constituency.
"I always go through every agreement in detail before agreeing. Sometimes, brands that work through agencies don't allow public announcements, but if they do agree, we still convey what kind of aid is being provided," he said.
Syed Saddiq also admitted to receiving numerous offers from various companies but remains selective, often declining those he deems inappropriate.
"I've turned down many offers due to poor quality. I believe we must protect our image. As a policymaker myself, quality must always come first for the benefit of Malaysians," he said.
In March, the former Youth and Sports Minister donated his entire RM1.36 million earnings from a modelling campaign — in which he appeared alongside actress Bella Astillah — to residents in Muar.
This move came after he revealed that government allocations for his constituency had been delayed.
Syed Saddiq's popularity has surged since his appearance with Bella in a festive clothing campaign, making him a sought-after ambassador for many brands.

RON95 price cut: One of government's best initiatives, says expert

KUALA LUMPUR: The government's decision to reduce RON95 fuel price to RM1.99 per litre is probably one of the government's best initiatives to date, said tax expert Datuk Harjit Singh Sidhu. He said the reduction in petrol price removes a common excuse used by businesses to justify price hikes. "I foresee prices of goods and services coming down as transportation costs decline. The next question now is whether businesses will pass these savings on to consumers," he told Business Times. Harjit also welcomed the decision to charge non-Malaysians the unsubsidised market price for petrol, noting that this would help stabilise government cash flow. On the toll freeze on 10 major highways and the government's RM500 million compensation to concessionaires, Harjit acknowledged the strain it could place on public finances but stressed the importance of prioritising the people's immediate needs. "Toll charges are part of the cost of doing business. Any increase would raise logistics and retail prices. "We can't get the best of everything . I believe the government is looking at what's important as of now," he said. He advised pausing new infrastructure developments temporarily to focus on safeguarding livelihoods of the B40 and M40 income groups. "This toll freeze should be seen as a proactive move in assisting those in needs in general. "To curb long-term concession planning, proper costing and town planning is required and government should consider more privatisation and reducing government participation. "But at the same time, it shoud consider enforcing price control to avoid profiteering and any form of indirect increase in the general business cost for business owners," he added.

Limited business impact from aid package, says Sarawak Chinese body chief

Wee says that while the initiatives primarily cover the general public, their effect on the business community remains relatively modest. KUCHING (July 23): The 'Appreciation for the People' financial package is expected to have limited direct impact on the business community, said Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations (SFCA) president Dato Richard Wee. Commenting on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's recent announcement, Wee noted that while the initiatives primarily cover the general public, their effect on the business community remains relatively modest. 'From initial understanding of the announcement, the major areas covered are aimed at the rakyat. For the business community, the impact is somewhat minimal,' he told The Borneo Post. However, he said business owners may indirectly benefit from postponed toll fare hikes and electricity savings, while supermarkets and shops may see a boost in sales due to increased spending on sundry goods and groceries. Wee added that the financial package will have more impact on Peninsular Malaysia than in Sarawak and Sabah, stressing that it is crucial for the federal government to ensure benefits are fairly distributed across all states. Among the measures announced was the reduction of RON95 petrol to RM1.99 per litre under a newly targeted subsidy mechanism. Currently priced at RM2.05, the new subsidy is expected to benefit around 18 million motorists nationwide. Additionally, 85 per cent of domestic consumers reportedly saw a reduction of up to 14 per cent in their July electricity bills compared to the first half of the year. The Prime Minister also announced a one-off RM100 cash aid for all Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above in conjunction with the Merdeka Day celebration. The assistance, provided under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) programme, will be credited via MyKad and can be used to purchase essential goods between Aug 31 and Dec 31 at over 4,100 participating stores nationwide. The initiative involves an allocation of RM2 billion and is expected to benefit 22 million Malaysians. As for 'Jualan Rahmah Madani', the government will double its allocation from RM300 million to RM600 million this year. 'This additional allocation will increase the frequency of sales and expand the number of locations nationwide, covering all 600 state constituencies. 'It will also broaden the variety of goods offered to give the people more options,' said Anwar. Additionally, Malaysians will enjoy an additional public holiday on Sept 15 in conjunction with Malaysia Day, allowing more time for rest and family. anwar ibrahim business impact financial aid Richard Wee

One-off RM100 cash aid a step in the right direction, says Kuching South Mayor

Wee speaks to reporters today. – Photo by Roystein Emmor KUCHING (July 23): Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has welcomed the federal government's RM100 cash aid initiative, describing it as a timely move to ease the financial burden of Malaysians amid rising living costs. Speaking to reporters at MBKS today, Wee said the assistance, though modest in amount, reflects the government's commitment to help the people during challenging times. 'In times like these, everyone has a responsibility and a role to play,' he said. He was asked to comment on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcement earlier today of the cash assistance aimed at easing Malaysia's rising cost of living. He said this one-off assistance under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) programme, will be credited via MyKad for purchases of essential goods between Aug 31 and Dec 31 at 4,100 stores nationwide. Wee also noted that the initiative shows leadership and concern for the rakyat's well-being. While some may see RM100 as a small sum, Wee believes it's a step in the right direction — one that shows sincerity and could lead to more substantial support in the future as the country's finances improve. 'During this hard time, you know, some of the people look at it as a small help, but it's an effort they put up. 'We start small, and when the country's finances recover, there might be more to come. 'So whatever effort they put in, it is good for the rakyat (people),' he said. Wee also urged the public to adopt a more constructive attitude rather than criticising such initiatives outright. 'Some of the people say it's only a RM100, but better than nothing, is it not? 'If we can help, I think it's an initiative worth supporting. 'If we receive it, RM100 is still RM100. 'Who knows? Maybe another few more months, you might receive RM500, then later on increase to RM1,000. 'So look at it in a more positive way,' he said. He called on Malaysians to remain united and supportive, especially when genuine efforts are being made to assist the public. 'We all want to be proud of our country. So when leaders make an effort, we should take it in a positive spirit. 'If you want to comment, make sure it's constructive, don't just criticise.' Wee concluded by encouraging Malaysians to stay positive and move forward together, even through difficult times. anwar ibrahim RM100 cash assistance Wee Hong Seng
