Lo'eau LaBonta makes historic debut in U.S. women's 3-0 win over China

Fox Sports01-06-2025
Naomi Girma returned to the national team and Lo'eau LaBonta became the oldest player to make her international debut for the U.S. in a 3-0 win over China on Saturday.
Catarina Macario, Sam Coffey and Lindsey Heaps scored while goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce got her second shutout in as many appearances.
LaBonta, the 32-year-old midfielder for the Kansas City Current in the National Women's Soccer League, came on as a second-half substitute.
"When they called my name, I was sitting being the best cheerleader I could be on the bench, I was like, 'This is amazing. I've never been field view watching the national team.' It was so cool," LaBonta said after the match. "And they were like, `Lo, go.' And I was like, go where? All right, let's go!"
The match also marked Girma's first appearance for the national team this year. The 24-year-old defender has been nursing injuries but recently returned to help Chelsea win the Women's Super League title and the FA Cup.
Girma commanded a record $1.1 transfer fee when she moved from the San Diego Wave to Chelsea earlier this year.
"We've missed her. We really have," U.S. coach Emma Hayes said. "Just in terms of the way we controlled the game, her in the deeper spaces making decisions — when to play forward, when not to — just rebuilding the connections again because if you think about the last time Naomi was here, there's been a lot of changes. But she said she was so happy to be back. She didn't realize how much she'd missed it until she drove up in the bus and saw the fans. But she's a world class player and you could see that."
Tullis-Joyce, who plays for Manchester United, started in goal in just her second U.S. appearance as Hayes looks to replace Alyssa Naeher, who retired from the national team last year.
Macario scored her 11th international goal after Alyssa Thompson kept the ball alive in a tumble in front of the net in the 28th minute.
Coffey made it 2-0 in the 35th minute, taking a pass from Macario out front and banging her second goal for the U.S. past goalkeeper Pan Hongyan with her left foot.
Heaps, the U.S. captain, scored on a header in the 54th minute.
"I feel like tactically we've gone up another level, I really feel that way," Hayes said. "I feel that there's so many more players, that are so much more in control, that we're able to do more. I was pleased with the performance."
The United States is currently missing several key contributors from last year's Olympic gold medal-winning squad. Sophia Wilson and Mallory Swanson are both on maternity leave. Trinity Rodman is dealing with a nagging back issue.
The United States famously defeated China on penalties in the 1999 Women's World Cup final. The teams last met in 2023, with the Americans winning both games.
The Americans have a 39-9-13 overall record against China, including five straight.
The United States was coming off a 2-1 loss to Brazil on April 8. China defeated Thailand 5-1 in its last outing.
The U.S. faces Jamaica on Tuesday in St. Louis.

Hereford continue perfect start with four-goal home victory

HEREFORD Pegasus maintained their perfect start to the Hellenic League Premier Division campaign following a 4-1 win over Lydney Town AFC on Monday night at the KGD Stadium. Pegasus are flying high under new manager Jamie Pitman and took their third win in as many league games. The hosts opened the scoring in the first minute when captain Jordan Williamson met a Harrison Summers cross from the left-hand side of the penalty area at the far post. The lead was doubled after 20 minutes when Summers curled home a low shot from the edge of the penalty area. Pegasus netted again three minutes after the interval when Jack Creswell slotted home from close-range after a good passage of play by the home team around the Lydney Town penalty area. The visitors pulled a goal back after 65 minutes when Kyle Gibbs netted courtesy of a low 20 yard drive. However, Pegasus re-established their three-goal advantage within two minutes of the restart when Summers netted his second goal of the evening with a 25-yard strike to secure all three points. Pegasus are not top due to both Droitwich Spa and Corsham Town having played an additional league match. It was a weekend to forget for Westfields who fell to a 4-0 defeat at Mangotsfield United. United opened the scoring in the fourth minute before scoring a second on 40 minutes, but also seeing a penalty saved before the break. The game then got away from Fields and two further goals came before the death. This weekend only Hereford Pegasus are in league action with a game at Highworth Town, as FA Cup fixtures are also taking place.

Transfer news, rumors: Eze to Spurs; Liverpool back in for Guehi, Isak latest

The latest transfer news and rumors revolve around Eberechi Eze, Marc Guehi and Alexander Isak, as Crystal Palace's trophy-winning side side is disassembled by fellow trophy winners Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool. MORE — Premier League fixtures, how to watch live info Here's the latest transfer news on Eze, Guehi and Isak. Spurs make their move for Eberechi Eze According to multiple reports, including this one from Fabrizio Romano, Spurs have made their move to try and sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace. Per the report, Spurs are pushing hard to sign Eze and talks are ongoing as the England playmaker is keen on the move. Per a report from the Guardian, Arsenal remain very interested in signing Eze too but are focused on moving on players first with the likes of Leandro Trossard, Reiss Nelson and Fabio Vieira available for transfer. The Guardian also goes on to state that Eze has a release clause of $91 million which expires this Friday, but that Spurs are unlikely to meet that fee. Where should Eze go? Either Spurs or Arsenal would be the step up he needs and Eze is coming off a wonderful season for club and country. He was the hero as Palace won the FA Cup, had his best ever season in terms of goals and assists and broke through to becoming a regular in England squads. With James Maddison out injured for most of the season and Heung-min Son leaving, Eze knows that Spurs are in desperate need of a new creative hub and he will be a star. At Arsenal he would also likely start but there is more competition for places there. If he wants to be the main man he should go to Spurs and his style of play on the counter under Thomas Frank may work better at Spurs. But given his quality and creativity it's also easy to see why Eze would be a key player for Arsenal too. This will not be an easy decision for Eze but it appears he is going to swap south London for north London this summer. He deserves this opportunity to be a star at one of the big boys and play in the Champions League. Liverpool hold talks with Crystal Palace for Marc Guehi Meanwhile, Liverpool are reportedly back in for Crystal Palace center back Marc Guehi, who the Reds (and Newcastle) previously pursued last summer and in January. Guehi has just one year left on his contract and is widely expected to leave Palace on a free transfer next summer, so it makes sense they would want to sell — despite his invaluable presence in the team. Liverpool got an up-close look at Guehi in the FA Cup final back in May and again on Sunday in the Community Shield — another Eagles triumph — and now feels the perfect time for everyone to get what they want. Most notably is Liverpool's want/need for Guehi to join their squad. Virgial van Dijk proved last season he is still That Guy and Ibrahima Konate had a solid campaign as well, but Konate is easily the worst on-ball defender of the trio — something that Arne Slot will be increasingly keen to improve in year 2 — and has shown to be a frequent injury concern during his time at Anfield. The next time he goes down, the depth chart reads as follows: 3) Joe Gomez, who is injured more often than Konate; 4) No one. No-brainer of a deal for everyone involved. Alexander Isak is not backing down on Liverpool move A report from David Ornstein says that Alexander Isak is 'adamant he will not play for Newcastle again' as the mess surrounding his future intensifies. The report goes on to state that Isak will not 'reintegrate' with the Newcastle squad even if he isn't sold by the end of the summer window. Isak wants his dream move to Liverpool but Newcastle are digging their heels in for a British record transfer fee of well over $150 million. What else can Newcastle do in this situation? If Isak really doesn't want to play for them again, what choice do they have other than selling him now? His value will drop massively if he spends the next five months sat in the stands and he knows that. Liverpool do too and will be happy with how this is playing out as they have all of the power in these negotiations. Isak has been a star for Newcastle, scoring 54 goals in 86 Premier League games for Magpies. But the way this has been handled is a mess and Isak is now going all out to push through his dream move to Liverpool.

Insider Names Picks for Cadillac's American F1 Driver

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Formula 1 insider James Hinchcliffe threw out some American drivers who Cadillac F1 should consider for their lineup. Hinchcliffe is a commentator for F1 TV and IndyCar, making him connected in both the American motorsport world and F1. He drove for 11 years in IndyCar, winning six races and capturing 18 podiums in his career. In an article on Hinchcliffe selected some potential United States talents who could break through on the grid and deliver where Sargeant failed to. People attend an event to unveil the colors for the 2026 Cadillac debut in Formula One racing, ahead of the 2025 Miami Formula One Grand Prix, in Miami Beach, Florida, on May 3, 2025. Photo byCadillac is the first new F1 team since Haas debuted years ago. Their arrival opens up two new seats on the grid for drivers to get additional opportunities, and considering the team's North American roots, some believe an American driver could be given a chance. The last American driver was Logan Sargeant, who raced for Williams over a season and a half before getting replaced mid-season by Franco Colapinto. Overall, Sargeant underperformed compared to his junior racing career track record, but with other talents racing all around the world, many believe other Americans can establish themselves on the grid. Kyle Ki rkwood Racing for Andretti in IndyCar, Kirkwood already has the needed connections to land a seat with Cadillac. Andretti Global is part of the Cadillac F1 venture, with both racing institutions joining forces in an all-American bid. At the age of 26, Kirkwood is driving at an elite level, winning three races and sitting fifth in the standings. He has surpassed teammate Colton Herta as the lead driver at the team, and his results could lead to a chance in F1. Jak Cra wford Already in the formula racing ladder, Crawford is around the F1 paddock more than anyone else on this list. He has three seasons at the F2 level. In his third season, he is currently in fourth place with three wins so far. There are reports already connecting the American to the Cadillac team. "And let's call a spade a spade, he was just 18-years-old in his first campaign, and F2 is an ultra competitive series. Now at 20, with a bit more racing maturity and some experience behind him, it's starting to come to him," the former IndyCar driver wrote. "If he can continue the winning ways and find himself in the top three at season's end, that would put him in a great position to be considered for the ultimate promotion." Connor Zilisch Competing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, Zilisch is one of the most promising talents in America. He is on the verge of securing a full-time Cup Series race seat, though he has previously competed in Formula 4 and stated his interest in potentially joining F2 to prove himself before getting a shot at the top. At the age of 19, the American has plenty of time to hone his driving skills and develop in the early stages of his career. Alex Palou and Scott McLaughlin Hinchcliffe also added IndyCar drivers Scott McLaughlin and Alex Palou to the list. However, neither was born in America - McLaughlin is from New Zealand and became an American citizen through the naturalization process. Both McLaughlin and Palou are great drivers who could drive in F1, though some might not call them American drivers since they were not born in the United States. Out of the two, Palou stands out as an exciting talent who is a three-time IndyCar champion. After conquering the American race series, he could potentially head over to F1 and make some noise.
